The Weardale Museum is a small independent folk museum established by volunteers in 1985 to preserve the heritage of Weardale. At the Weardale Museum we have a unique and powerful family history resource - data from censuses, parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials, gravestone inscriptions, wills, newspaper extracts, and many other local sources have been brought together into our formidable genealogical database, “Weardale People”, which we run on a well known commercial family history program, and which currently contains almost 50,000 individuals, from some 300 Weardale families, whose relationships can be displayed as ancestor charts or descendant trees

“Outstanding Volunteer Run Museum” – but don’t take our word for it, this is the verdict of Renaissance North East and the Arts Council for England who have also awarded the museum full accreditation. This small folk museum is packed with fascinating stories from the past including a hands on lead-miner’s kitchen and The Weardale Tapestry, a beautiful 16 foot free-style embroidery depicting Weardale’s history. To commemorate those who served in World War 1 the Museum has assembled a special display to remember ever soldier from Weardale who died with stories, images and artefacts illustrating the lives of many individuals. Visit also the historic and beautiful High House Chapel, the oldest Methodist Chapel to have held continuous weekly services since it was built in 1760, and one of John Wesley’s favourite chapels.

"Everybody should come here !" A local family drove past our small Folk Museum (The Weardale Museum, Ireshopeburn) for thirty years before venturing inside only to be amazed at what has been sitting on their own doorstep all these years. They left a simple but a lovely message in the visitors book which I will pass on to others who may be tempted to drive past - "Everybody should come here". We tend to agree. Open 1.30 - 4.30 every day until the end of August and then Wednesday - Sunday till the end of November.
