Multnomah Zen, a four waterfall scenic hiking experience
Multnomah Falls and other waterfalls and vistas of the Columbia Gorge are astonishing icons of geology, the sort that have inspired mythology and lore of warriors, gods and passions. We will drive out in our vans to meet the tallest waterfall in the state, and then drive to a few of the shorter but even more stunning ones, too; falls which could only be the daughters and sons of legend. In this half-day experience, we will explore wonders with some short hikes (totaling less than 2.5 miles/4 km) and visits to overlooks and vistas that will have you gasping in awe. While Multnomah Falls and its iconic Benson Bridge are together the most-visited tourist attraction in the Portland area, they are only a part of our experience. We will meet at our shop in inner SE Portland, where we'll ride in our comfortable Sprinter and Transit vans to the nearby gorge. Depending on weather conditions, we will visit a few small hidden waterfalls and spectacular plunge-style falls whose columnar basalt has us learning words for "amazing" in other languages. We'll also tell you stories, geology, botany and oft-repeated tales of pioneers and road-builders, but also the old stories we've learned, of gods and wild spirits and about the oldest North American civilization, forever altered by “manifest destiny." Please note we book directly as well as through AirBNB, and your group may be up to 10.
Downtown Portland Coffee & Donut Tour
Come walk around the bustling streets of Downtown Portland with your local guide and discover why Portland is the coffee and donut capital of the world! We'll visit several genuinely local craft coffee houses for an interactive look at different styles and flavors of coffee. Plus we’ll munch on a bunch of locally-made donuts and pastries from shops you can only find right here in Portland. We like to think this the perfect way to discover Downtown Portland, see where locals get their coffee and donut fix, and have fun! Some things you can expect: - At least three different types of coffee and plenty of donuts and pastries at a total of 4-5 different shops. (Reasonable drinking sizes that most coffee drinkers can handle and enjoy.) - Devour several different flavors of classic donuts from a tiny donut shop. - Learn all about coffee and its history, including how coffee's third wave movement started right here in Portland! - Walk around the bustling streets of downtown to discover Portland’s quirkiness and preserved remnants of an historic past. - Learn the technique of brewing the perfect cup of coffee from a barista extraordinaire. - Stand in Pioneer Courthouse Square and learn all about “Portland’s Living Room”. *We do not visit Voodoo or Blue Star during this tour as they are on the common tourist track.

On this tour, you'll join me as we explore the city and food culture through the medium of donuts. We start near the PSU campus where we begin at Sesame Donuts and try some of their amazing sesame donuts as well as many others. We'll finish the tour at Voodoo Doughnuts, where you can even skip the line (sometimes a 30-60 minute ordeal). We hope you can join us! Other things to note Currently, many of these shops do not have gluten free or vegan options, so options are very limited.

Bike Around Portland to Culture and Art
Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell roses (in season), taste treats, ride across bridges, and along rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland. Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art installations, sculptures and poetry beaches. We start in the inner Eastside at our shop at 833 SE Main St #124, where we will fit you for a bike and helmet, ready for an 8-10 mile ride. We head out into Ladd’s Addition, to our fave rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. We’ll ride along the water before we head over another bridge back to our shop! Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally, figuratively, our bike ride is a poem; a series of poems; to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the streets and pathways in this place we love. Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! It rains often in Portland; rain jackets are wise. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.
Grilling with Chef Steve
With me, Chef Steven, you'll be cooking and eating some of the very best grilled food of your life! You'll begin by learning about preparation methods for various proteins (brining, dry rub, marinating) to ensure juicy, flavorful results. Then you'll learn how to pair sauces with your proteins to further enhance their flavor. And to close out the evening, we'll make the entire meal on the grill for you to enjoy! I focus the class on the science and the "why" behind grilling techniques. You'll learn my "Golden Seven" rules for perfectly grilled proteins, and tips for searing and smoking like a pro! While the weather in Portland can be unpredictable, our grilling patio is completely covered and we have outdoor heaters if the grill isn't keeping us warm enough! We will hold the class regardless of weather. (Alternate class times, private parties or parties of greater than 10 can be accommodated by contacting the Chef directly.) I can also come to you! If you've booked an AirBNB in the Portland area (up to 60 miles away) that has a grill, I can come teach the class at your location! I also do private chef parties, catering and events. Just message me for details. Unfortunately, I cannot host a class for one person, but solo guests can feel free to join classes with other guests.
