In addition, there are many brick and mortar stores and restaurants surrounding it. I take all of my out of town friends here to visit it.

A Street car stops at Benning Road and 16th ( a few feet before 16th West). It will take you to Union Station, where a metro subway station and Amtrak is. It might still be free!
And, a major bus line, the X2, stops at 16 and Benning Road NE. Take this bus WEST towards Chinatown/Gallery Place or further on to Metro Center.
You will need a Smartrip card. You can get one a the metro station.
