Check out this typical Kiwi pub and see why it's a local favorite.  The pub and the dinning room have recently had a complete make over, its lovely and its brought a 100 year historic icon into 2023 with a bang while retaining the character. Raise a glass at Boots and Jandles pub, the perfect spot for a classic Kiwi beer and generous portions of tasty food. "Thirsty Thursday" is a great time to enjoy a long happy hour. There is a great outdoor area for warm summer evening. Don't miss the specials board and the roast meal of the day for great value. Even the pizza, a standout dish, bucks the typical commercial style with tons of toppings on a thyin crust.

Great place to take the kids for a swim. Old kids can jump off the historic bridge. This bridge saved many lives. Crossing rivers was often dangerous for early travellers. Drowning became known as 'the New Zealand death'. Before this bridge was built, Ohau River was crossed using a wire rope and cage. At first, authorities were reluctant to replace the cage with a bridge, as they were worried it would help the spread of rabbits. In 1889 iron girders were sent by rail from Dunedin to Kurow then by bullock wagon to the Ohau River. By July 1890 the bridge was completed at a cost of just £1000 (2000 dollars). Today, Ohau Bridge is the only surviving engineering structure of its type in the Mackenzie. It is registered by the NZ Historic Places Trust now Heritage NZ category 2. Engineering details. The Ohau River Bridge has a clear span of 36.5 metres (m) and an overall of 41.5m. You might also like to visit the Susan Monument. Susan and her daughter drowned while fording the Ohau River in 1879 not 1872. The Ohau River was a tributary of the Waitaki River until the construction of the hydro dams in the 1960s and the middle of the river still forms part of the traditional boundary between Otago and Canterbury regions. Today the river runs five miles from Lake Ohau to the man made lake, Lake Ruataniwha, built in 1980, the foresight of Max Smith. The historic Ohau Road Bridge is to the right of the dam, access via the Old Bridge Road on the east side of the dam, on a pond with willows along the banks, beautiful in all seasons.

The Hooker Valley Track relatively easy 10km (return) walk from the car park to the glacial lake, its quite spectacular. Just off the road. there is a good car park. It's a glimpse into rhe rich history of the WItaki Valley. North Otago and South Canterbury have the lion’s share of New Zealand’s rock art sites. Half a millennium ago the valley of the Waitaki River was a well-trodden seasonal hunting and fishing route.

This is a great little South Island ski field and caters for all abilities. The day lodge, with a log burner is great to hang out in when you are taking a break from the skiing, if you haven't taken lunch you can get something at the cafe. The ski instructors are great with the kids.
