Internationally inspired tapas served in an art-filled restaurant with an open-air patio. Although originally set up in Key West, Santiago’s now boasts two additional locations in Orlando, each with a particular personality. This communal spot embodies the sharing mentality behind Spanish-style small plates. Come here with a large group to sample the breadth of the menu but make sure not to leave before really delving into the space’s look. The reclaimed wood bar top, stained glass windows, Gaudi-esque furniture and one-of-a-kind artwork all over the restaurant make it that much more special.

A fancy restaurant serving American food… with a twist. The Ospery Tavern is a treat for the tastebuds and the eyes. The design of this modern American spot leaves you feeling luxurious but cozy, with camel colored leather seating, a long marble bar, reclaimed-wood walls and brass detailing characterizing the space. Associated to such a long list of awards and commendations, it is hard to believe that Chef’s Table at the Edgewater Hotel isn’t talked about more. In short, expect an intimate dining experience that showcases fresh, local ingredients in a historic atmosphere. The Edgewater Hotel is located in historic Winter Garden, surprisingly close to Disney but undeniably opposite in style and cuisine to the buffet dining you’ll find in the theme parks. Disney goers looking for an upscale meal at the end of the day should flock here in droves.

To those who know Whole Foods, this is the one we go to when we stay at the condo. For our international friends, this store carries a lot of locally sourced foods, many are more sustainable and/or organic than most grocery offerings. Beware rush hour though, this area of town gets gridlocked at rush-hour as tourists and workers collide from 4:50-7p most days.

Publix is the local grocery chain. Some are better than others. This one is a little...."tired looking" on the outside, and definitely needs a bit of renovation, but inside they have a lot of nice offerings at the deli, the butcher, the fishmonger, etc. They have deals all the time. So if you need to stock up on waters, tea, juices, cereal, steaks, diapers, grab a bottle of wine, some snacks, whatever... this is your closest "true" grocery store.

Shopping

Is this a shopping mall? Eh, it's more of a shopping frenzy. Holiday Shoppers make the pilgrimage several times a year--standing in lines for hours upon hours for designer discounts and deals. It can get down right crazy--people park their cars on landscape medians when parking is full--they're not likely to tow any shoppers... just stay out of the handicap parking and the firelanes, but they'll let you park in a tree if you don't hit anyone else's car. Walking from store to store is outdoors, [pro-tip] but the beer vendors and pretzel hawkers can make a sunny day more manageable for the husbands who fade on the power-shopping expedition. There is an indoor foodcourt and foreign currency X

Parks & Nature

This is the REAL fountain of youth (it actually could be one of the springs Ponce de Leon was looking for). A local swimming/kayaking place, the water is always the same, 74-degrees. It's crystal clear. Water shoots out of a crack in the limestone like a geyser with such force you can't swim into it. Picnic baskets are allowed, but not alcohol. There is an entry/parking fee--it goes to maintaining our parks, and it's worth it. The entire swimming area has a sea wall around it to protect it from runoff infill and making it nicer to swim.

This hidden gem! The Maitland Art Center (formerly known as The Research Studio) is a historic site in Maitland, Florida. It was founded and designed by architect and artist J. Andre Smith (1880-1959) in 1937 as an artist colony, dedicated to experimental art. Funded by philanthropist Mary Curtis Bok, the colony hosted artists such as Ralston Crawford, Milton Avery, and Consuelo Kanaga. It is located at 231 West Packwood Avenue. On November 17, 1982, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Maitland Art Center is one of the five museums encompassed by the Art & History Museums - Maitland (A&H). The A&H's Maitland Art Center offers artist residency programs, a variety of art classes for adults and children, professional development for artists, and dynamic programming for art appreciation. The A&H is a non-profit organization funded by earned income and contributions by the City of Maitland, the State of Florida, United Arts of Central Florida, grants, and individual donations. The A&H's Maitland Art Center is one of the few examples of Mayan Revival architecture, also known as Fantasy Architecture in the southeast. The grounds are a common location for outdoor weddings. The art center offers three areas for weddings: the Main Garden, the Chapel, and the Mayan Courtyard. The Center (as The Research Studio (Maitland Art Center)) was designated a National Historic Landmark in August 2014. It was given this designation primarily for its distinctive architecture, a Mayan-influenced interpretation of Art Deco.

I grew up calling it MGM Studios... I guess we're now calling it Disney's Hollywood Studios--this park is about special effects and is pretty fun. Tower of Terror and the Haunted Mansion are classics.

Universal came to Orlando after Disney. Whereas Disney is outside the city and attempts to create a magical utopia, Universal squeezed into a void between Disney and Downtown--it's flavor is more gritty, and leans toward the fantastic over the magical.

American racing owe's a large bit of history and innovation to the hard, hard, hard, white beach sand of Daytona. Wave after wave has crushed and ground what was once coral into sand so fine, it's like pavement--so naturally, thrill seekers found the beach to be like a long flat stretch of road--to race on. A hundred years later...Daytona 500 and bike week(s).

is a historic neighborhood in Tampa, Florida, United States, located just northeast of downtown. It was founded in the 1880s by Vicente Martinez-Ybor and other cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Cuba, Spain, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories rolled hundreds of millions of cigars annually. Ybor City was unique in the American South as a successful town almost entirely populated and owned by immigrants. The neighborhood had features unusual among contemporary communities in the south, most notably its multi-ethnic and multi-racial population and their many mutual aid societies. The cigar industry employed thousands of well-paid workers, helping Tampa grow from an economically depressed village to a bustling city in about 20 years and giving it the nickname "Cigar City". Ybor City grew and flourished from the 1890s until the Great Depression of the 1930s, when a drop in demand for fine cigars reduced the number of cigar factories and mechanization in the cigar industry greatly reduced employment opportunities in the neighborhood. This process accelerated after World War II, and a steady exodus of residents and businesses continued until large areas of the formerly vibrant neighborhood were virtually abandoned by the late 1970s. Attempts at redevelopment failed until the 1980s, when an influx of artists began a slow process of gentrification. In the 1990s and early 2000s, a portion of the original neighborhood around 7th Avenue developed into a night club and entertainment district, and many old buildings were renovated for new uses. Since then, the area's economy has diversified with more offices and residences, and the population has shown notable growth for the first time in over half a century.

Think you're a real hipster and all the other hipsters are just imitating? Do recognize the correct brand of absynthe being drizzled ceremoniously over the flame-kissed sugar cube? If you don't you can politely ask for a menu, the bartenders always come courteous and come correct. Check out The Courtesy.
