Arts & Culture

Oslo's Opera House is located right at the harbour, with an angled, white exterior that appears to rise from the water. It invites its visitors to climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of Oslo and the fjord, all year round. Large-scale windows at street level provide the public with glimpses of rehearsals and workshop activities. The building's interior is mainly oak, and the main hall is shaped like a horseshoe, reminiscent of classical theatres of the past. The opera is designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, and has received several prestigious awards. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet offers a rich and varied programme from three stages: The Main House (1369 seats), Second House (400 seats) and the Studio (200 seats). The Opera roof and foyer are also used for concerts. Guided tours available in Norwegian and English. Norwegian name: Den Norske Opera & Ballett

Sightseeing

Bjørvika Barcode is a masterplan designed by MVRDV of Rotterdam and the Norwegian firms DARK Architects and A-lab. It is realized as a row of multi-purpose high rises designed by different architect firms. The buildings are all long and narrow with some space in between them, thus jointly resembling a barcode. Besides the overall shape the buildings are very different, with many enjoyable architectonic details and quirks. The construction of Barcode is part of the larger development of the Bjørvika area. The tall buildings are situated close to the Oslo fjord, and have radically redefined the skyline of a city that was distinctively low-rise. The project has caused an unprecedented stir among both architects and the citizens of Oslo, and the designs and heights of the Barcode buildings remain hot topics of discussion.
