The service is hit and miss, but the coffee and ambience are always on point (I love sitting at the bar)! This place started in the back of a bus and now operates a storefront in Anchorage. Beans are roasted in teeny tiny batches in house, and you can even order beans to be custom roasted exactly as you like. Alaskan craft coffee at its best!

The best used bookstore I’ve seen aside from Powell’s in Portland. Excellent prices and a huge selection.
The best used bookstore I’ve been to next to Powell’s in Portland. An excellent selection of well-priced books in every category. Grab a coffee at Kaladi next door and spend a few hours browsing.

Great spot for unique, fair trade gifts. Jewelry, household goods, and clothing. Each item comes with a little card with details about the workers who made the item.

Day Trips

A teeny tiny boom and bust gold rush town with a current population around 100. Great fishing and white water rafting on Six Mile Creek. Grab a beer and a meal at the only cafe in town (which is delicious) while rubbing elbows with rafting guides and listening to live music on the weekends.

Incredible skiing, hiking, and dining options abound. Check out some breweries and hike the Winner Creek Trail, featuring a fun hand tram to propel yourself across the creek!

A stunning 2.5 hour drive from Anchorage worthy of its own weekend-long stay but also suitable for a full day trip (especially in summer under the midnight sun!). The drive takes you along Turnagain Arm, one of the most scenic drives in the country, and into the Kenai peninsula. In the height of summer, the colors will take your breath away - blues, greens, and hot pink fireweed in saturated tones. In Seward, you can take a glacier cruise, go kayaking, or take a long hike (Lost Lakes, Mt. Marathon, and Caines Head are popular). Visit Resurrect Art coffee house, the Sea Bean cafe, Seward Brewing Company, Thorn's Showcase Lounge, and Zudi's Cafe for great food and drink.
