Mono Lake is located 30 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes. Take hwy 395 north to hwy 120. Mono Lake is a majestic body of water covering about 65 square miles. It is an ancient lake, over 1 million years old -- one of the oldest lakes in North America. It has no outlet. A reserve was established to preserve the spectacular "tufa towers," calcium-carbonate spires and knobs formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. It also protects the lake surface itself as well as the wetlands and other sensitive habitat for the 1 – 2 million birds that feed and rest at Mono Lake each year.

Hot Sptings

Looking for a place to relax and unwind? Head to Mammoth Lake's area hot springs to enjoy scenic alpine views as you relax in the warm spring water.
Mammoth Lakes FREE scenic hot springs provide ideal locations for a relaxing soak. The hot springs are primitive and have no bathrooms. Most people wear swim suits and they can get crowded. Wild Willy's (2 tubs)-turn left on Benton Crossing Rd (Green Church on corner) just south of airport, go 3 miles, turn right on dirt road after the 2nd cow grate, go 1.5 miles to dirt parking lot. Hilltop-Same route as Wild Willy's except just past the 2nd cattle guard, go down a moderate hill, turn left at bottom of hill onto a dirt road, go for 300 yrds to dirt parking lot. Follow the paths to the tubs. There are also Crab Cooker, Rock Tub, Hilltop and Shepard's hot springs near the same area. Please ask your host for a hot springs guide for a map and directions to all the hot springs in the Mammoth area.

This is another small hot spring (5-7 people) located off Benton Cross Road. Pass the second cattle guard and make a left on the next dirt road. The pool is easy to miss if there aren’t other cars parked in the small cut out. You can’t see the pool from the road, but head down the sandy trail about 100 yards and you will see it. This small pool is partially man made quite similar to the Rock Tub Hot Springs. The water here is a bit warmer than Rock Tub and since it’s located a bit further down a dirt path tends to be a little less crowded than the others in the area. Make sure to check out the source of the water – most likely where it’s name comes from as it really does look like a crab cooker!
