How to get drunk and high

Ghana has a fun cocktail culture. But some of the drinks can be pretty nasty. My favorite is Kokroko at Republic Bar. It is spicy with lots of alcohol and chillingly cold. Beware of brain freeze. At Hechtech we have a small stock of bottled drinks, including the two local beers -- Star and Club -- plus Heineken as an exotic import. We also have a great Nigerian drink called Orijin. If you are a more serious drinker there are tons of bars all around for rich and poor. Many Ghanaians smoke weed but few admit it. That's because it has been very VERY illegal. The police often catch people, especially tourists. Since the COVID-19 lockdown laws have been relaxed but the police have not yet got the memo and they are still stopping and searching. So, if you smoke weed never ever leave the premises with it, especially in the evenings. We will not be able to help you if you get caught. You may end up paying lots of money and have a horrible experience. Don't do it, we beg you! It could turn your visit to Ghana into a nightmare. That said, certain bars have special arrangements with the police to sell a special green weed drink. It's called Amen because after you drink it you are finished. It includes the local distilled spirit Akpeteshie but some say it also includes the painkiller Tramadol. So beware. Also, do not leave the bar with a glass or a bottle of Amen. The police may be lurking and catch you. The place to get it near us is Ry-mix (search on the internet).
Great place to hang out. Nice mix of locals and internationals. Best drink in the whole world. Kokariko. Great food. Great music. What else do you want?

How to get fat (also for vegetarians)

Many Ghanaians are not into salads. Many do not eat their vegetables. But there are exceptions: Palava sauce or Kontomire stew is made from cocoyam leaves though with smoked fish and often red meat as well. A single Ghanaian dish can include a whole zoo of animals, some you might consider pets and rodents. If you notice a delicious smell on the side of the road, chances are it is 'kelewele'. It has no meat just spicy fried plantain deep fried often in coconut oil served with groundnuts (peanuts). If you are a vegan who wants to clog your arteries, this is the way to go.
