Cross the border into Spain and visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The "largest surrealistic object in the world," it is located in the the former Municipal Theatre, a 19th century construction destroyed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. On its ruins, Dalí decided to create his museum. It's filled with his outrageous art and a just has a wonderfully kooky vibe. A must see.

Lovely, intimate restaurant with good food and outside seating against the ancient church walls. Specialising in local dishes, and largely organic.

Great pizzas, but so much more than that. They serve up a decent steak frites, and the moules gratinees are actually to die for. Situated in the Place de Neuf Jets, it's also one of the prettiest spots you'll ever sit to eat. And, if it's raining, the interior is charming, too. We probably eat here more than anywhere else in town.

Think vinegar is just some sour wine? Think again! If you even a little bit of a food lover, this producer of artisanal vinegars will sweep you off your feet. From Port-Vendres, you'll drive up and up to the village of Cosprons and just beyond. The vinaigrerie is small, and outdoors. Your guide (you'll have a guide even if there is just one of you!) will explain the process of making vinegar from the local wine while you swan around the barrels of the stuff in the making. Then, on little spoons, you'll be able to taste all the flavours on offer. A visit to the shop is recommended, but there is no pressure to buy anything, and your visit is free.

Perpignan, the Catalan capital of France (Barcelona is the capital on the Spanish side), is an attractive, city with narrow streets, abundant eateries, shops large and small and a seemingly endless energy. Walk through the arch at Castillet, up a street lined with the local pink marble to the Place de la Loge, where you can pause for a drink or a visit to the new Tourist Info Office. Or, just turn left and walk toward the cathedral square. There are some tables there, where you can plunk yourself down and gaze around Place Gambetta while you enjoy a sangria blanche or a cool Ricard. The Hyacinthe Rigaud Fine Arts Museum has just reopened after a long renovation, so I'd suggest that, too!

Sightseeing

Collioure must surely be one of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean, if not anywhere...truly. It was much beloved of painters such as Matisse and Derain, and still today there are many painters around the bay who will be happy to sell you their own versions of the the iconic church tower and the vintage fishing boats bobbing in the sheltered harbour. The streets, too narrow for cars, are filled with shops aimed at tourists, but are nonetheless charming, and there are some gems for dining. The Chateau Royale presides over the town, and a walk still higher out of town will take you to the Fort St Elme, offering splendid views back down to Collioure and over to Port-Vendres.
