Sightseeing

Take a walk up Hoad and visit the monument ( built in 1850 in honour of Sir John Barrow, a naval explorer and Second Secretary to the Admiralty, who was born in Ulverston) a replica of an early version of the Eddystone Lighthouse. You can climb up the monument on Sunday afternoons in summer. I recommend walking up the back from Chittery Lane and walking down the front (and stopping off at the Coach House Cafe in For Park). There is a route map in the house.

Located in the Vale of the Deadly Nightshade (halfway between Barrow and Dalton-in-Furness), Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 and was the second largest, richest, and influential abbey in the country. In 2012, excavations uncovered the grave of a Cistercian abbot, which also contained a very rare medieval gilded crosier and jewelled ring – these are now on display in the visitor centre.

The Cistercian monks of Furness Abbey used the island as a safe harbour and built a warehouse there for the storage of grain, wine and wool. A castle was built around 1327 to oversee trade and provide defence. Today, the ruined castle is managed by English Heritage (free entry). The island is also home to The Ship Inn, which dates from the late 18th century. Access to the island is by ferry from Roa Island (connected to the mainland by a causeway). The ferry also runs seal trips, which visit the seal colony on nearby Walney Island.

Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve is part of the Duddon Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest, there is a beautiful sandy beach and the sand dunes are home to Natterjack toads, numerous butterfly species and more than 600 wildflowers. The estuary itself feeds a wide variety of wading birds. There is a car park at the site, although it is possible to walk to Sandscale Haws from the cottage – it is a very long walk and you would have to walk on an outgoing tide. We recommend walking from Askam-in-Furness (park at the bottom of Parklands Drive [LA16 7JP] and head towards the sea), you can walk along the beach in less than an hour – it is a lovely walk on a sunny day.
