Food Scene
Easily one of the 10 best restaurants in New York City. To me the pastrami cured lox & scrambled eggs is sublime, and I don't use the term lightly. Their chopped liver is as good as the best pates in France. On weekends arrive after the crowd, after 12:30.

Senegalese-French is some of the best food in Harlem. Yatenga and The Shine, to which it is attached at the hip, has all the makings of a perfect evening on 7th Avenue. The sidewalk cafe's people-watching at its best, bumped up a notch for all the cool kids there to check out the bands next door. In summer I most frequently order their tuna tartar accompanied by a clear liquor cocktail. One of their bartenders comes from 20+ years at the much lamented Lenox Lounge, long the epitome of cocktail culture Uptown. All of their bartenders are good. My wife is fond of their duck magret w/the house Bordeaux. In winter their Steak Au Poivre with a brown liquor. Perfect

Kosher Ethiopian with all the amenities of a good Parisian bistro. I go there for the peace, quiet, and flattering light as much as the menu. Hostess Beejhy Barhany's seemingly eclectic selections are well curated. Where to chill on Sugar Hill.

The delivery menu to the best Latino restaurant in the Heights is on your desk. Our stay at home go-to. Their broiled chicken is the best in NYC, their sweet plantains are like little kisses, red beans and yellow rice, a bottle of cold El Presidente from the deli. Perfection. If you're going I recommend after 2 a.m. when the clubs let out.

Bette Midler's place off the Heather Gardens on the grounds of the Cloisters. Perfect Sunday brunch with bloody mary, mimosa, or champagne, with jazz and cocktails at dusk on their patio; both posh. A total charmer. Reservations are a good idea: (212) 568-5323.

Senegalese French and Uptown soul cuisine. “Phil invites a group of his musician friends to play two sets of jazz, blues, and soul on Thursdays at Harlem’s Lenox Saphire, a Senegalese-American restaurant a few blocks from the Apollo. You won't find this in a tourist guide. Our closest cafe/bar is the kind of place that our neighbor and hip-hop scribe Greg Tate described: "Yes, folks Real Black Amurrcan Folk Life is still going down in these fast-gentrifrying tucked-away Harlem bistro side pockets." Laid back. You could be in Jamaica. The food's home made, inexpensive, the liquid coolants hearty, and the coffee from Blue Mountain.

Best jazz juke around. You play? Sit in. You want to fit in? This isn't cocktail culture. Keep it simple. Beer, on-the-rocks, non-vintage red or white. You're there for the music and some street life.

Particularly good Wednesday nights. You want to be down home it's hard to beat the Legion Hall. Great live music, great small crowd, and the perk's soul food steam table style that's good as sass and dirt cheap.

As much a restaurant as a bar. It's often open when everything else is closed. Tired maybe but no less charming as it's been around long enough a little tired's to be expected (like Sylvia's). The older crowd's not tired but cool. Continental, Cajun and Southern cuisine.

In the Renaissance heyday of Harlem cabarets 133rd Street was known as Jungle Alley. Billy Holiday used to sing at what today's Bill's Place, the last of the townhouse English Basement jazz clubs to carry on carrying on. Your apartment is the English Basement, beneath stoop, in our house. That Bill's doesn't serve alcohol doesn't matter - there are vast quantities near by - save it's a place where anyone under 21 or just plain sober is welcome to the music and the scene as played Uptown.

Across the street from your garden apartment is the oldest residence in Manhattan, Washington's HQ for the Battle of Harlem Heights (1st military victory of the American Revolution), where Hamilton met his match in Burr, and the former residence of the infamous hussy Madame Eliza Jumel. Camilla's exhibition, "The Loves of Aaron Burr," by and about women whose histories touched on the house, illuminated a louche and illustrious history, as well as a few of its mysteries.

Our infamous Belgium block streets surrounding the Roger Morris Park & Jumel Mansion that Duke Ellington called "The Crown of Sugar Hill," I dubbed "Where the Founding Fathers meet The Founding Brothers. " As our 18th century's history is all about Revolution, Anti-Imperialism, Self-Determination, Enlightenment & Egalitarian morals & ethics so is our 20th Century status as the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement embracing same. Home to W.E.B. DuBois, Ralph Bunche, Walter White, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Kenneth & Mamie Clark, Paul Robeson and Jazz royalty this is a crossroads where truth and falsehood open doors to the future and close doors to the past.

The perfect constitutional a half mile from your doorstep through Manhatta primeval to the Victorian walk way from the Heights to the Bronx (there and back's another half mile) all under the proverbial Witch's Tower. The oldest bridge in the city reopened refurbished having closed in 1970 to keep what was burning in the Bronx from burning Washington Heights. Great views of the Harlem River. Its touristy without tourists, where the locals go to chill. Also check out the pools at the WPA era Highbridge Park up above.

For the past 20+ years, Sunday afternoons from 4 to 6, Marjorie Eliot's Parlor Jazz has kept The Triple Nickle's rep as Sugar Hill's most prestigious address alive. When Joe Louis was heavy weight champion of the world he lived here with Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Paul Robeson, Thurgood Marshall, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, Johnny Hodges & more better. You'll here Marge's jam sessions back-in-your-own-backyard but you'll miss the lobby by Louis Comfort Tiffany and the intimacy of her apartment.

1st, the 1 pm tour of the plants used to make the dyes for the Unicorn Tapestry in their gardens is as enlightening as anything in the Met's Medieval Collections here, far from Fifth Ave. Peace and quiet, tranquility, some of the best you'll find out of church.
