It is in our street (1 minute walk). This is absolutely my favorite sushi restaurant in Amsterdam. With an authentic Japanese chef running the place, it is usually swamped with Japanese businessmen (confirming the authenticity). The sushi served is absolutely delicious and of high quality, I recommend the Kaiko menu. Furthermore, the hotate salad and sea urchin are absolutely lovely, the almond tempura gives you that crunchy and salty taste, and toro sashimi melts away on your tongue. Lastly, the tamago is really juicy (not your usual description of eggs, but highly recommended).

With a name like Hotel de Goud Fazant this place sounds like it might be an old-fashioned family hotel but actually it's a hip restaurant on the water’s edge in Noord (North Amsterdam). In a gigantic shed of 1200 m2 with a raw and rugged decor, the chefs are cooking up a storm here.

The view over the river Amstel (Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel) is great at this beautiful designed restaurant. It has a nice menu (international cuisine) and an extensive wine list.

Most of Amsterdam’s best restaurants aren’t in the middle of the city—the warm, inviting As, for example, is on the border of Beatrixpark, a leafy, peaceful green space in the Zuideramstel neighborhood, which is known for its pretty bridges arcing over the canals.

Inspired by the building’s former purpose as a gunpowder factory, celebrity Chef Peter Lute opened a restaurant specialising in spices. De Kruidfabriek (spice factory) is stylishly furnished with sofa-style seating, industrial lighting and photographs of its former factory days. As for the menu – you’re in for a treat. Creative combinations of herbs, spices and seasonings permeate the largely vegetable-based dishes.

Parks & Nature
A modestly-sized park that is intimate and relatively quiet, but at the same time is big enough to make you feel like you’ve escaped the city for the day. Great for sunbathing, picnics and for wading in the paddling pool with the little ‘uns.

The Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) is Amsterdam’s largest park and recreational area. The lush forests and grassy meadows offer plenty of space for a relaxing picnic with family or friends, and the park is crossed by many kilometres of well-marked walking and cycling paths. Inside the forest you’ll find a goat farm with a petting zoo that makes delicious homemade ice cream and cheese on site. There is an outdoor theatre, a botanical garden and a long canal known as the ‘Bosbaan’ where rowing competitions often take place. Bicycle, canoe, kayak and pedal boat rental is available at the Amsterdamse Bos.

Huis Marseille is a small photography museum that has occupied a gorgeous, 17th-century canal house located in the centre of Amsterdam. It takes its name from a stone tablet attached to its exterior that depicts a scene from the French port of Marseille. The curators of Huis Marseille have strived to maintain as much of the house’s original warmth and intimacy as possible. Each of its exhibition rooms has a unique character and the building itself still carries an aura of a ‘gentleman's residence'.

Seen across the water, the small island of Pampus looks like any other island. But take a closer look and you’ll see this is no natural land mass at all, but a submerged sea fort built in the 1890s to protect Amsterdam from enemies. After a restoration in 2007, you can now visit Fort Pampus by boat and explore its secret tunnels - and it’s also a popular location for events.

Cycling is wonderful in Holland, especially the greener routes through the countryside. Rent a bicycle near Amsterdam Central Station, hop on the free ferry over to Amsterdam Noord and follow the North Holland canal into Waterland, a vast area of farmland, small villages, nature reserves and waterways. Smaller routes to Durgerdam and back take a couple of hours. For a full day of cycling, venture along the dyke all the way to quaint Monnickendam and up to Marken, with its green wooden houses and cafes. A ferry connects Marken to another fishing village, Volendam. Perfect for sampling kibbling or herring, the local delicacies.
