Things To-Do During Your Visit

Places to get food and dine that we love!
These recommendations are based on our having eaten at these places many, many times, or bought food there. Denis is a foodie and a bit of a food snob, so he's unlikely to steer you wrong!
This is one of our favorite places to eat and drink. Great beers on taps (including local ones), and awesome pub food. Best burgers in town. Great fish and chips. And beautiful view from deck with outside seating. This is a 21-and-over place, so no kids. During the summer, it can get busy and the deck fills up, thus, if you want to sit on the deck, going during off-hours or midweek is best (if you can). The servers here work hard and are great, but when they are slammed, food can be a bit slower to come out. (A good reason for a second beer!) There is live music many nights, as well as Open-Mike on Wednesday, and karaoke on Thursdays. [COVID Update: No live music now. No bar service. Closes at 10 pm. EXCELLENT cleaning and other safety protocols.]

Great place for a bit more upscale lunch or dinner. The service is always great. Another great place for fish and chips. I usually order the risotto, which is a special of the day, usually with fresh local seafood. They also sell their own spice blends for a great souvenir of your visit to PT>

I love the soup here, and also the salads. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, including vegan muffins. Port Townsend Chocolate Company is in the same space, selling sell handmade chocolates that are to-die-for (and that we often include as a treat in the guesthouse).

One of the nicest and best restaurants in town. The cocktail lounge and wine bar (connected but next door) is a great place to unwind and enjoy some small plates. Food here is awesome.

Across from the Rose Theatre and down some stairs. True wood-fired pizzas, clams, and sandwiches, including an amazing Philly cheese-steak and an Italian Sub. Great selection of beers on tap and wine-by-the-glass. Denis eats lunch here a LOT!

If you love bread and pastries and muffins and cookies, THIS is the place. I love the white Pullman loaf to make French toast. And you've not really had a hot dog until you had one on the hot dog buns they make and sell here.

Denis LOVES noodle soups and sushi, and Denis LOVES, LOVES this place. He says: "I have had noodle soups all over the world, and I promise, the place is AMAZING. All broths made from scratch. If you need to stock up on some food or groceries, this is the place. Lots of locally grown produce. The Deli has really tasty food that you can get to go. You don't need to be a member to shop there, but you don't get the discount members do. (It's not a big difference in price, actually.)

This is where we buy most of our meat, poultry, and seafood...especially seafood. Everything is local. And the folks who work there are friendly and helpful. They'll filet any fish you buy. They also have cheeses and deli meats. Love this place.

Sort of like the local Denny's restaurant. Diner-food, but done quite well. Denis is a particular fan of the country-fried steak and eggs. You can order the menu in the HUGE back bar. There is music and dancing at nights in the bar. (We've never been at night, because we are home-bodies at night.)

Lovely farm-to-table restaurant that opened a year or so ago. Best to make a reservation for Friday or Saturday nights. Denis has had the brunch here a couple of times and it is excellent. Great place to get a martini (in the bar) and awesome happy hour appetizers. The deviled eggs are to-die-for

Old school, romantic vibe. Classic Italian food with an emphasis on red sauces. Excellent lasagna (although Denis insists that the lasagna he makes is better). Would be a nice place for "date night" for just the two of you. Solid pizza too.

You can get it all here. Not recommended for "regular" grocery shopping (prices a bit high), but excellent for grabbing some beer, or picking up that thing you forgot as you head for your picnic. Excellent selection of beer, wines, liquor. Deli in the back of the store has excellent food. Denis often gets soup to go here for lunch at his office. Upstairs there is a seating area with wi-fi. AND, even better, there is an EXCELLENT sushi restaurant upstairs. So we weren't kidding when we said you can get anything here, or pretty much.

VERY popular place to get to-go orders. All of the orders come as meals (with salad and rice). Not the best Thai food, but it is still tasty. If you order "medium" hot, it is barely hot at all (in the opinion of Denis). We get to-go food food from here once or twice a month. There are a few small, crowded-together tables for eating-in, but most people get food to-go.

Great option if you want to go to Sirens, but not everyone in your party is 21 or over. Same owner as Sirens, and similar food, although there are more dinner-type things on menu here, like a couple of different options for steaks. Excellent burgers. And if you like poutine (and are not from Montreal because this is not that kind), be sure to get a plate and share it. A tasty gut-bomb.

If it's not raining and suddenly sitting outside and eating a hot dog is what you want more than anything, well this place is for you! Excellent selection of hot dogs. Fast, friendly service. And lots of picnic tables to sit and to enjoy your hot dog and watch the world go by.

The sandwiches and sides here are amazing. And if the owner Mike is around, be sure to say he. He is a great guy. Great place to get a to-go lunch for eating at the beach or around town. This place also has a beautiful deck with great views.

A newer addition to the food scene, but well worth a visit. Owned by a husband-wife team who are always there and working. I love the Scotch egg. The mac-and-cheese is pretty great too (and Denis makes AMAZING mac-and-cheese and is picky about it).

If you are in the mood for a movie, this is the place. It also has AWESOME popcorn with a variety of toppings available. (You can just go in and buy the popcorn, if you want and there is not a crowd in the lobby.) Lots of interesting special showings on the weekend, including old movies and plays.

No visit to Port Townsend would be complete without a trip (or two or three) to Fort Worden. There is a great lower area where you can walk on the beach. And an upper area where you can walk around and see all the gun-bunkers and other artifacts leftover from World War II. There are a couple places to get food to eat. And the Marine Science Center is here too. We take our dogs to Park here all the time.

A favorite spot of ours to eat lunch or take the dogs for a walk. You can access the beach from the park and turn right to walk toward Hudson Point, or left and walk toward the lighthouse at Fort Worden. When the tide is out you can walk out FAR! Swing sets and other play-equipment for kids (of the kid in you). There is a great Shakespeare in the Park performance here in the summer.

Not only is the area around the Center a lovely place to stroll and see boats moored and views of Point Hudson, you can see and learn about the "working waterfront" that is so much about Port Townsend and its history. Great shop that sells souvenir-type things, but also "real" boat supplies. This is also ground central for the Wooden Boat Festival each year, the starting point for the Race-2-Alaska, and next to the beach where the Great Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Race.

Absolutely awesome place to grab a beer and sit outside, basically on the beach if you want. This is a favorite of locals, especially during the summer season when other places attract lots of out of town visitors. But, don't worry, if someone figures out your not a local, they will still be nice.

Another favorite of locals. Beer and wine only. Cash only. Right around the corner from the Saturday Farmer's Market, in case you want to grab a beer after doing the Market. A new spot downtown that involved the complete renovation of an historic building. Lovely courtyard seating to stare at the water-views and sip wine. Appetizers available too. Shopping (Food and Otherwise)
Where I do my "ordinary" shopping for staples and such. (I do the majority of my food shopping at the Food Co-op, which has a relatively limited supply of frozen foods, cleaning supplies, etc.) The Safeway in town looks (and is) bigger, but the selection at QFC is much better, and it usually a bit quicker to find things and check out. If you need to get some hard liquor, this is the place to go also. Wide-ranging selection and good prices.

We own a lot of books, and that is partly due to this bookstore. Primarily used books for sales, including collectibles. If you collect cookbooks, like Denis does, this place has an excellent selection. They are always receiving more and different books. Great place to spend an hour or two browsing, or searching for that out-of-print book you have been looking for. Pretty much every category of book is here. We LOVE this place.
