Fantastic Riding Centre set in miles of beautiful countryside only 25 mins drive from the Mill. Professional, friendly staff – Jane the owner is amazing! All standards catered for from beginners to advanced. Riding lessons are available at a very reasonable rate in their BHS approved Riding School. Cannot recommend highly enough for anyone interested in a casual hack through the Cornish landscape or a more exhilarating gallop across the fields. All rides are completely traffic free along private tracks. Great horses, great equipment with good safety standards and encouraging instruction for the more nervous rider. Deal well with multi-level group rides. The quickest route from the Old Watermill is across the river on the Bodinnick Car Ferry. Stop off in Lostwithiel for afternoon tea on your way back. HORSE RIDING & LESSONS Polmartin Riding Polmartin Farm Nr Lanreath Liskeard, PL14 4RD. Tel: 01503 220428 http://www.polmartinfarm.com

At the top of Fowey overlooking the estuary. Beautiful rather grand building – the inspiration for Toad Hall in Wind in the Willows. Open lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. Decidedly more formal than the others but dress is still quite casual and they welcome children and dogs. http://www.foweyhallhotel.co.uk

A Fowey institution. Casual, lively, ALWAYS busy. They say "American Diner meets Rock and Roll!". Lots of fresh local seafood caught daily, top quality home-made burgers etc. NO BOOKINGS - just turn up. GO EARLY if you want to eat right away. When full you will have to wait but you can always while away the time with a cocktail or two! http://www.samsfowey.co.uk

Not in Fowey but at the nearby Polkerris beach. KEEN walkers can walk to Polkerris from the Old Watermill and work up an appetite for lunch and then get a taxi back. The restaurant is an old RNLI lifeboat station (1859-1922) with beach frontage. Dogs accepted at outside tables. Lots of seafood, and locally sourced produce. Great pizzas from wood-fired pizza oven. Have a cocktail and watch the sunset. Also open for breakfast. Same website as Sams above. ESSENTIAL TO BOOK AHEAD

We recommend having lunch here on the terrace overlooking the St Mawes estuary – good food and stunning scenery. As well as a good menu, they offer special set two or three course lunches – both include a glass of wine. If you want a treat for a special occasion book their yacht and 2 crew for a morning sail prior to lunch or an afternoon sail prior to dinner. Alternatively, grab a board game from their collection and chill over afternoon tea! http://www.tresanton.com Telephone: 01326 270055

A colourful quirky cosy café serving breakfast and light lunches and afternoon tea. Salads, soups, paninis etc. Good vegetarian dishes. Very relaxed funky décor – bright and mismatched – unique in Fowey. Makes most people smile! Love it or hate it – most people love it but everyone has an opinion on this unusual cafe. http://www.pinkymurphys.com

Something very different at the Hidden Hut. Alfresco dining at its best. They are open normally for lunch and supper in the summer months. But they also have "feast nights" which are a memorable treat for all the family at communal tables on the beach. (check web for what's on during your time in Cornwall) Bowl up in your flip flops (or wellies!) with your own plates, cutlery and alcohol. You may also bring anything that makes you more comfortable – be it cushions, folding chairs and rugs. Hot drinks, soft drinks and homemade cakes will be available for sale on the night. Reservations and the advance purchase of tickets are a must! http://www.hiddenhut.co.uk

Lots of guests are interested in visiting Padstow and going to Rick Steins Seafood Restaurant. The set lunch is good value for a "TV chef" and the a la carte is very good. We like to book a late lunch (around 2pm) and drive to Padstow in the morning – park in the Padstow car park in front of Rick Steins and hire bikes from there and cycle (or walk) some of the Camel trail for a few hours then back to Rick Steins for lunch. The Camel trail is an 18 mile long disused railway line which passes through spectacular countryside and coastal areas. (Wenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow) Padstow is a pretty town and well worth the trip and a walk around after lunch.

Prawn on the Lawn in Padstow follows a similar format to it's sister restaurant in Islington being a fully licensed fishmonger and seafood bar with the addition of a hot food license. This has allowed the owners to experiment with different dishes, making the most of the local produce of Lobsters and Crabs and cooking them on a charcoal grill. Still a small operation with only 24 covers, the menu changes every day and aims to be as sustainable as possible, working with local suppliers in Padstow and the surrounding areas. http://prawnonthelawn.com

Kittows is a Fowey institution and is our local butcher, deli and greengrocer. Go for pasties, pies, cheese, quiches, cakes, chutneys, local preserves, pastries, local fruit, veg, meat and poultry and their award-winning sausages. These include our very own sausage the "Pen-er-tinny Porker". ("pen-er-tinny" is the Cornish pronunciation of Penventinue which is the name of our Lane!). Make sure you have a chat with Mr. Kittow – he knows everything about Fowey and it's inhabitants! Kittows, 1-3 South Street, Fowey http://www.kittowsmeats.co.uk

Our favourite by far for bread is the Quay Bakery at Fore Street, Fowey http://www.quaybakery.co.uk Great Sourdough bread and their 'Cheesy Feet' biscuits make a fun addition to your cheese board and are cute little gifts. Cornish clotted cream and local jam for your cream tea can be bought in Kittows or the little supermarket in the middle of the town. Take home a cream tea or a Cornish Pasty and have it by the pond in the garden...
