“The Liverpool bar is blatant proof of the past of the “cais do sodré ” area until about 8 years ago: various strip clubs for sailors, old-school bohemians and traditional restaurants. There are no strip clubs anymore, and the crowd has become younger and hip. But the owners and decoration remain the same, with the mirrors, laser lights and intimate corners. The music remains 80's pop and Glam rock as always. Definitely a local charm.”

“This place you really must visit! A terrace with fantastic view over Lisbon. It is a circus arts school, and also bar and restaurant. Good place to make a pause when visiting Alfama and the Castle.”

“Located west of the city centre at Alcântara's LX Factory complex, Cantina LX exudes a shabby chic atmosphere where a miss-match of hand-me-down chairs and tables are set in a former warehouse space to lend the restaurant a delightfully informal, almost haphazard canteen appearance. The food is wholesome and refreshingly uncomplicated, and for the most part traditional Portuguese. ”

““Art, food and drink.” That’s the motto of Estaminé, the little house that can only accommodate eight people, but where you can enjoy all of these things. The artwork (ceramics, photographs and postcards) is exposed for everyone to look at. So are the kitchen and owners, Luís and Joice, who prepare their dishes calmly, as if they were in their own house. The mojitos (€5) are delicious. You’ll pay about €20 for two people at this restaurant, which has been number one on TripAdvisor for over a year.”

“Portuguese sandwiches highly priced for locals, but quite yummy (ok, for Lisbon standards - you have to travel around the country to find the real yummy)! I lived in this neighboorhood for more than 10y and just discovered this place on my last year living there, which means Baixa can still have some secrets. Mostly locals go to this place, since it's a bit out of the beaten track. Around 6-7 euros per sandwich. Favorite sandwiches: suckling pig (this is quite great by any PT standards!) and fried cuttlefish ("choco").”

“A little-known public garden with a view over the city. Named after its former owner, this public garden at the top of a hill opened in the 1960s with a view over Avenida da Liberdade and all of downtown. That's also where you find a pond with an 18th-century mermaid statue, which turns into a pool every August for the "beach of Torel." To get here you have the help of the Elevador do Lavra, the city's oldest funicular. ”
