The Den is a unique space within the Lake District - a Scandinavian style BBQ cabin. A large BBQ pit in the centre to sit around provides a cosy relaxing evening space, and a place to cook! WiFi, Fridge, Microwave, Kettle & Nespresso. Bedding provided, and a heated blanket! 8 minutes by car to Windermere, 5 minutes to Kendal. Easy access to a bus stop and cycle lane. Dales Way very close by. A camping-type toilet and sink (hot & cold water) next to the cabin. Dogs welcome £5/night extra.
Set in 2/3rds of an acre of beautiful gardens with private countryside views. Off street private and secure parking is provided. Toilet is located next to The Den in a separate shed. The sink has running hot & cold drinking water. Please note there are not shower facilities, but the sink with running water is suitable for taking a daily wash.
We are about half way between Kendal and Windermere. The main cycle lane into the Lake District is directly across the road, as is the Dales Way walking path. The Den is in a semi-rural setting with views to the surrounding countryside. For clarity's sake, during busy rush hours there is some traffic noise from the road, but evenings and nights are typically quiet. Please note that we are not the Windermere Camping Site, despite the AirBnB map showing it close by!

Large suite of rooms on the top floor of our Georgian Grade II listed house in Kendal town centre quietly tucked away at the head of an historic cobbled yard. Double bedroom, huge adjoining living room (with basic kitchenette and double sofa bed) and modern bathroom all for the exclusive use of our guests. Free parking.
Although the suite is part of our house, it is private and self contained with its own access so you can come and go as you please. The suite can comfortably accommodate 4 people with 1 double bedroom, large private living room (28ft x 21ft - 8.5m x 6.5m) with basic kitchenette and double sofa bed and a modern private bathroom. Please note: there are no cooking or washing up facilities in the suite. Crockery and cutlery is provided for breakfast and/or takeaway food and we collect and do the washing up for you when requested! All rooms have double height ceilings with exposed beams, great views across Kendal's rooftops to the hills beyond and plenty of character. The living room has 2 large lounging sofas (one of which opens to a comfortable double bed) a 48" Smart HD TV and DVD player and kitchenette with fridge, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine and Aeroccino milk frother, toaster, crockery and cutlery. The bedroom has a double bed, flat screen TV and digital radio. The bathroom has a large free-standing bath with hand held shower, twin sinks, underfloor heating and glass towel warmer. Towels, bed linen, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, universal travel adaptor and hot water bottles are provided. Wi-fi. You'll find a large selection of DVDs under the coffee table and an array of local interest books, leaflets and maps which you are welcome to use during your stay. Help-yourself-breakfast is provided for each day of your stay at no extra cost (homemade bread, butter and preserves, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, local yoghurts, fruit juices, black and herbal teas and a selection of Nespresso coffees). There are ice cubes in the freezer compartment of the fridge. Please take a look at our guidebook for details of local restaurants and eateries we recommend. We own a miniature Dachshund (very small). Her name is Miss Saveloy Sausage or Savvy for short. She is very quiet, friendly and adores children but is never allowed in the suite (she can't get up the stairs - they are too big)!
There is a superb supermarket 2 minutes walk away that stocks a wide variety of local and specialist produce and has an excellent cheese counter, deli section and off licence. Kendal's bustling high street is one minute's walk away where you'll find plenty of shops, a library, the post office and several banks. There's a Costa on the main high street and Caffe Nero is in the marketplace. It's worth exploring Kendal's historic yards where you'll find many of our more individual retailers and businesses. The market town of Kendal lies just outside the spectacular Lake District National Park, has plenty of pubs, cafés, takeaways and restaurants, 2 museums, a leisure centre with swimming pool, golf course, the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Brewery Arts Centre with a theatre, cinemas, art galleries, bars and a regular live music programme (visit the breweryarts website). There are plenty of places to explore with lovely parks (Kendal Castle, Serpentine Woods and Noble's Rest) and pleasant walks along the river Kent right on our doorstep. There is a street market every Wednesday and Saturday and a farmer's market once a month. EATERIES AND CAFÉS WE RECOMMEND: CASTLE DAIRY Visit castledairy.co.uk to book. The Castle Dairy Restaurant and Art Gallery offers a unique dining experience in Kendal’s oldest inhabited building. Staffed by Kendal College apprentices and watched over by chef Robert Stacey, the restaurant provides exceptional food, surrounded by local art work, in a truly unusual setting. NB: Currently closed due to the floods in December 2015. Keep checking their website as they do plan to reopen in March 2017. Five minutes' walk from our place on Wildman Street. BABA GANOUSH Food Shop & Canteen baba-ganoush.co.uk Daytime eatery with a no booking policy and a no frills no fuss approach! Two minutes' walk from our place just off Finkle Street. THE NEW MOON newmoonrestaurant.co.uk Best of British using local produce. Five minutes' walk from our place on Highgate. BISTRO DEJA-VU dejavukendal.com 3 courses from £17.95. Two minutes' walk from our place on Stricklandgate. MASONS - YARD 24 masonsyard24.co.uk Masons Yard 24 is owned by a small independent family partnership who wanted to bring the Masons building back to its full potential, focussing on quality craftsmanship, good food, good atmosphere and family values. Open daily 11.00am - 11.00pm. 01539 727979. Three minutes' walk from our place at 18 Stramongate, Kendal LA9 4BN. BREW BROTHERS brew-brothers.co.uk Independent licensed shabby chic coffee house serving Illy & Farrers (local) coffee, speciality teas, homemade cakes and fresh innovative food for breakfast, brunch and lunch. 8.00am - 6.00pm Two minutes' walk from our place at 69 Highgate. BREWERY ARTS CENTRE breweryarts.co.uk Superb pizzas and Brewery Tapas menu every evening. The informal family friendly surroundings make this one of Kendal's most popular places to meet. During the day the Warehouse Café is the Brewery’s unique arts café bar and cinema. They have a beer garden too. 5 minutes' walk away on Highgate. BARS & BREWHOUSES WE RECOMMEND: RUSKINS ruskinsbar.com A minute's walk away in Yard 2 off the high street. Run by our mate Shaun. THE FACTORY TAP thefactorytap.co.uk The tap house of Bowness Bay Brewing. Genuine hospitality and very, very real beer plus a selection of quality wines, care of the legendary Frank Stainton. THE BREWERY ARTS CENTRE breweryarts.co.uk Cask ales from around the UK and a selection of interesting bottled beers along with a variety of wines, spirits and soft drinks. BURGUNDY'S WINE BAR AND BREWHOUSE burgundyswinebar.co.uk Two minutes' walk away on Lowther Street, Kendal. Friendly wine bar with micro brewery. My stone terrace cottage is located in one of Kendal's conservation areas and 5 minutes walk to the station, town centre and the river Kent. The cottage is a cosy, quiet, relaxing space with an enclosed wildlife garden at the back of the house.
The house was built in 1820 as an old weavers house apparently. I renovated it 8 years ago with an open plan kitchen and lounge with wood burning stove. The kitchen has an fan oven and gas hob, fridge and freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave, and everything you need to cook meals or enjoy a take-out. There is a small kitchen table and chairs that you can get out and use in the house or for breakfast in the garden. The log burner is a treat in winter with a free supply of wood. There is Wifi and a selection of books and maps, allowing you to make the most of your stay. The bedroom is a good size with a comfortable double bed, wardrobe (with full length mirror inside), chest of draws and chair. The bathroom has a bath/shower combination. The enclosed garden out the back gets the sun in the morning till early evening in the summer so you can sit have breakfast or dinner and watch the bees buzzing around wildflowers, pick herbs for cooking or alpine strawberries for breakfast if there are any left :) There's bike (or general kit) storage out the back or in the cellar should you need it. Also bike cleaning facilities. You will have a parking permit for the local area so can park for free either outside the house or nearby. It does get full late afternoon when residents come back from work so you might have to park in one of the adjacent streets. its fine to load outside the door though. Everyone does it.
Kendal is an old market town situated in what i think is one of the most beautiful parts of the country – the Lake District. Its also within 30 minutes drive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it a perfect base for outdoor sport addicts, walkers and sightseers....

Character cottage in the heart of Bowness. Walking distance from all amenities , yet set back in a private location behind trees. With parking and lovely garden this is the perfect place to explore the beautiful surroundings.
FOXGLOVE COTTAGE IN WINDERMERE LAKE DISTRICT Foxglove Cottage lies in Bowness, one of the Lake Districts most popular villages, with its many shops, inns, cafes and restaurants leading down to the beautiful lake Windermere. Foxglove cottage is the perfect place to enjoy the outstanding natural beauty and to walk to local restaurants for a spot of dinner and maybe glass of wine or two. The end property of three traditional lakeland cottages, Foxglove Cottage is a short walk from Bowness village and bay and yet remains private, hidden behind trees and shrubs. A shared drive leads up to the cottages and Foxglove is on the far end with lovely private garden to the rear. The side entrance leads into the well equipped kitchen/dining room. A single step leads up to the oak beamed sitting room. The room has comfy sofa and arm chairs, and , of course , the obligatory log burning stove. A most comfortable and cosy place to relax after a long walk in the beautiful surrounding area. A narrow staircase leads to the upstairs floor, on the landing is the first bathroom with bath and overhead shower. A few more steps lead onto the main landing off which there are two bedrooms, one the master double, with en-suite whirlpool bath and overhead shower, the second a pretty twin bedroom. At the rear of the cottage there is a lovely private garden, surrounded by shrubs and trees. there is a dining area where you can perhaps have a barbecue and enjoy a glass of rose in the spring/summer. This is a perfect place to stay for either couples or a small family, where the amazing area of the Lake district can be easily explored and just a short walking distance you can pop out to wine and dine in the evening before returning to a cosy relaxing cottage. The Location The linked towns of Bowness and Windermere lie east of Lake Windermere, where Bowness is at the waters edge, with the town of Windermere set about a half mile away above the lake. Each is a busy community of shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions, serving both the local community and our visitors to the Lake District. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the bay at Bowness, a sweeping crescent of waterfront and adjoining parkland, where you can enjoy a walk by the shore or find a quite place to picnic. At the bay you will find the piers and the famous Windermere steamers, which offer boat trips up and down the ten - mile reach of the lake. Here you can also hire rowing boats and motor powered boats, which can be taken by the hour to explore the lake and it islands for yourself. Other popular attractions are the World of Beatrix Potter, the Windermere Steam Boat Museum and a little south of Bowness the Blackwell Arts and Crafts house, one of the most important surviving houses from the turn of the 20th century. The house is a superb example of the Arts and Crafts movement architecture, where it occupies a stunning position overlooking Windermere and is open to the public as a gallery for craft and applied arts. North of Windermere is Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Center. Set on the lakeshores the main house is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you will find a huge adventure playground, café, shop and exhibitions along with a host of information about the National Park. For visual entertainment you have the Royalty Cinema in Windermere, and the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness, staging a lively annual season of music, theatre, comedy and film. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants, where for me the best is by far Jericho’s in Windermere. Owned and run by Jo and Chris Blaydes, the welcome is always warm, the setting perfect and the cuisine delicious. For a good country pub atmosphere there is the Queens Head at Troutbeck, about 2 miles from the main village the inn offers fine beers, good food and roaring fires in winter months. For the big walks and big landscapes you will have to travel a bit further into the park, however there is a good local walk up onto Orrest Head, which begins from Windermere, just opposite the railway station. Anecdotally it was the first ever walk for Alfred Wainwright where the view from the summit was said to have changed his life and set him on a lifetime of fell walking and the production of those much loved walking guides. Also quite local are the fells to the south of Bowness. Although not mountain high, they offer a magical rolling countryside rising above the lake with magnificent views. Travel a little further afield and you much to explore. South of the villages, at the foot of Windermere, is Newby Bridge and Lakeside where the steamers terminate. Here you will also find Fell Foot Park for boat hire, fishing and the National Trust Gardens. East lies kendal, the capital Town of South Lakeland. A host of good shopping, restaurants and a busy cultrural scene with the likes of the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and The Brewery Arts Center. At the northern head of the lake lies Ambleside, a popular town with cinema, pubs, restaurants and huge selection of outdoor and climbing gear shops. Once you past the head of the lake you are within easy rach of the big fells such as the Langdales, the forest of Grizedale and the other great lake in the south, Coniston Water.
The outstanding natural beauty, beyond compare! Convenience of local village with it's selection of restaurants and shops.

South Lakeland Leisure Village is a wonderful 5 star rated holiday park on the edge of the Beautiful Lake District. This 4 bedroom lodge is wonderfully situated for couples and for family holidays. The lodge is situated on the side of the lake with a decking area, with a fantastic sunken hot tub. The hot tub belongs exclusively to the lodge and is not shared. There is Wi-Fi, of around 3-5Mb included free of charge. The site has a Gym and a family friendly pool, for an additional charge.
There are 4 bedrooms. 1 is a 5' queen bed, 1 is a 4'6" double and there are 2 rooms, both with 2 single beds in them. The master bedroom has an en suite shower room with a toilet, shower and sink.
The lodge is only 30 minutes from Lake Windermere and the whole of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within driving distance.

South facing, small, traditional Shepherd's hut with views, internal shower, compost toilet, log burner, kitchen area. 2 mins by car to Kendal. Scenic walks from doorstep. Kendal is an attractive market town with an eclectic range of shops, cafes, restaurants, and a lively Arts Centre with a cinema and theatre.
Please note we are NOT on a bus route. You must have a car or rely on taxis into town (2 mins). Our Shepherd's Hut is a unique place to stay: It is situated on the junction between the rural road to Underbarrow and a bridle- way named Gamblesmire Lane which leads to Cunswick Scar and Scout Scar, so it's ideally situated for country walks. It is fully insulated with sheep's wool so is snug, comfortable and warm. There is a microwave, electric kettle, toaster, indoor shower and a compost lavatory. There is a thermostatically controlled electric heater and a Hobbit wood burning stove for cosy evenings in. The stove heats the hut up very effectively, and we often chuckle when people light it on a warm evening and then fling open all the doors and windows when it gets as hot as a sauna. A good tip is to open the little window above the top bunk as this created a cooling draught of air without being too cold. You can walk out of the door and along Gamblesmire Lane, a footpath that leads to Scout Scar and Cunswick Fell. There are bird feeders beside the window so you can watch the birds at close range, including woodpeckers, and will wake to bird song. As the hut faces south east, you will see the sun rise over the hills and the valley below. On clear nights, you'll see the moon rise. At night, owls hoot in the coppice nearby and in summer there are bats flitting about the hut. At present, the shower works but isn't very powerful as there's not enough water pressure. There is cold water in the bathroom sink and hot water in the living area. In frosty weather the water supply has to be turned off and guests use the bathroom facilities in the house. There is bottled water in the hut. There's a seating area outside the hut with a table and chairs and a small firepit. It is situated in it's own little garden, quite near to our house where we also host Airbnb guests and are on hand to help you with suggestions for exploring the wonderfully green, gentle hills of the Lyth and Winster valley with their numerous green lanes and lovely views. The hut is next to the fell footpath gate and there are horse riders, mountain bikers and walkers going by at times, so expect to enjoy saying hello and having a pleasant chat. In summer, there are Lakeland Hound Trail races up the fell. This is a traditional Lakeland sport and very exciting to watch if you get the chance. (It has nothing to do with fox hunting, by the way). The living space in the hut is 7 feet by 16 feet, so it's about the same size as a small towing caravan but with much more charm and character! Shoes off indoors, please! Don't drain crockery on the lovely wooden sink top. Please dry up with one of our best tea towels instead!
Please note, that WE ARE NOT ON A BUS ROUTE and you will need a car to get here from Kendal. There is a car rental next to Kendal station. Public transport will take you to the main tourist areas, but not to the most beautiful and scenic. It is also very slow and frustratingly infrequent. Convenient as a base for the southern Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, our hut is in a secluded position in our garden with easy parking on the driveway. There is a scenic footpath beside it named Gamblesmire Lane that leads to Cunswick Scar, Scout Scar and footpaths to Underbarrow and Crook. Kendal market town is a 2 minute drive by car or a 40 minute walk across the Scar. It has lots of interesting small shops, a market on Wednesday and Saturday, a fabulous Climbing Wall, the Brewery Arts Centre, interesting historic buildings and yards and excellent cafes. There is also The Museum of Lakeland Life and Abbot Hall Art Gallery. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are a few miles to the south of the town. There are 5 award winning country inns that serve great food within a 10 to 20 minute scenic car journey of the hut. The nearest, at Underbarrow 10 minutes away is The Black Labrador. There is also a rural pizza delivery service, if you fancy a night in and a take away.

This ground floor apartment is in a lovely green part of town a stones throw from the castle and great walks. Close to cinema, restaurants, cafes and bars. It has everything you need to enjoy a self catering holiday. Families welcome and a travel cot is available.
Our three roomed ground/lower ground floor apartment is beautifully located in an end of terrace Victorian house at the foot of the Castle Hill in the market town of Kendal. It's in a quiet neighbourhood surrounded by trees and greenery but only 5 minutes walk along the river bank from the town centre and its traditional pubs, bars and restaurants. You can walk up to the castle ruin, perfect for evening sunsets and enjoy panoramic views of the Lake District hills and the town. Or take a stroll along the river to the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum of Lakeland Life. The apartment is furnished with a mix of antique and modern furniture. It has two double bedrooms and one sitting room with a double sofa bed. There is a TV/DVD player in the living room. The kitchen is fitted with everything you need to enjoy a home from home stay such as oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a bathroom which has a bath with shower over. Kendal is known as the gateway to the Lake District but has lots to offer too, from micro breweries to theatre. The Brewery Arts Centre has a music venue, theatre and cinema screens as well as bars and a restaurant - see what's on there by going to breweryarts website. The pubs in town offer an eclectic mix of local ales and live music to suit all tastes. A small town with a big heart, in November Kendal hosts its annual Mountain Festival. Each year it welcomes thousands of outdoor enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate mountain culture and adventure in film, lectures, art and literature. ‘Kendal' is the biggest event of its type in the world and it's the main social event for outdoor enthusiasts in the UK. With hundreds of film screenings including high-profile premières plus plenty of speakers and special guests making this Festival a must-do long weekend in the Lake District. There are exhibitions, book/comic signing, question and answer sessions as well as films during the weekend. See the internationalcomicartfestival website for details. There are also various food and beer festivals which you can find out about on the cumbriacamra website. You I had great times being a guest through airbnb before I began hosting and I want my guests to have a great time being here too. I like meeting people and finding out about their lives and travels. I live separately so guests can relax and enjoy the privacy of their own home from home. But I'm also only next door so I'm usually on hand to offer advice about places to go or if you need help or there is anything which needs sorting out. I also have friends who help me with cleaning and they are close by too if by any chance I'm out of town. Kendal is a market town on the edge of the Lake District. It isn't very big but it's safe and it's pretty with a river running through it and plenty of greenery and tranquility at the castle ruin. There's plenty to do and an active art, music and beer scene with a number of microbreweries. Plus the all the that the Lakes has to offer is on the doorstep. Kendal has two excellent and renowned annual festivals. The International Comic Arts Festival in October which again involves the whole town and celebrates all things graphic, cartoon and animé The Kendal Mountain Festival in November for those interested in the outdoors and climbing, film, photography and other cultures. Also look out for Lakes Alive annually at the beginning of September. Houghton House is about 5 mins walk from the centre of town and 10mins from Kendal train station. If you're driving there is roadside parking outside the house. Kendal is easily accessible from the M6 and has a mainline rail station Oxenholme Lake District with direct trains to London Euston 2.5 hours. There is a local rail link, 5 mins to Staveley (which has a nice pub the Eagle and Child) and about 15 mins to Windermere. There are also regular buses and boats to take you into the heart of the Lakes. Check out the Mountain Goat website and Stagecoach for timetables.

This is a cosy private room in a terraced house 5 minutes walk away from central Kendal. You will be easy reach of cafes, the castle, the beautiful river & the brewery arts centre. The space is shared with my partner Michelle & the dog, you have access to all the communal spaces & are welcome to cook. Think hostel simplicity! We are a lived in house so spaces will not be sparkling clean but hygienic 😊 Your bedding & towels always laundered but never ironed 😊 on street parking available.
Guests are welcome to use the kitchen and laundry facilities. A free continental breakfast of cereal and toast is included not to mention as much tea, coffee, chai, herbal tea etc as you like. You are more than welcome to use the kitchen to cook, we have oil, spices etc that you are more than welcome to use. There is no dishwasher unfortunately so the only downside is the washing up :) If you want to get here early or make the best of your last day you can leave your luggage in our front room, as long as the room is vacated by 11 we're not fussy.

Lake Windermere is a short walk from our front door, accessed via the National Trust's Fell Foot Park. Newly opened Active Base centre at Fell Foot offers a range of watersports. Across the lake at Lakeside is the Haverthwaite Steam Railway, the Lakes Aquarium and you can take the passenger ferry around England's largest lake with Windermere Lake Cruises.

Witherslack is a quiet rural farming village. It is a popular base for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is about a 15 minute walk to our local pub the Derby Arms which serves excellent meals and has a wide choice of beers. If you wish to travel a little further, there are a variety of pubs which serve good food, and at least five of them only take between 7 & 10 minutes by car and they are all definitely worth a visit. Well known Whitbarrow Scar is the backdrop to Landour and is just 10 minutes walk away. The scar is designated a biological site of special interest and a ' national nature reserve' due to its supporting some of the best European examples of natural limestone habitats. It also features in 'The Outlying Fells of Lakeland' by Alfred Wainwright. He describes it as "the most beautiful walk in this book, beautiful it is every stage of the way.... all is fair to the eye on Whitbarrow". There are many other public footpaths starting in Witherslack, two of which start within 50 yards of this property. One of these takes you up Yewbarrow Fell and the other towards Beck Head and Whitbarrow Scar. If you wish to venture further afield Lake Windermere is only a twenty minute drive away or, for the more energetic, it's about a two hour walk across the fells. The popular village of Cartmel is also about a twenty minute drive away and is well known for its 12th century medieval Priory, the racecourse and its culinary delights i.e. the L'Enclume restaurant which was hailed best in the U.K. by the 2014 Good Food Guide Other places nearby to visit are Levens Hall renowned for its topiary gardens, Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall, Fell Foot on Lake Windermere and Grange-over-Sands where you can catch a train over the viaduct across Morecambe Bay to Arnside. For those that enjoy shopping the popular market town of Kendal is twenty minutes away. Then there is all of the Lake District within your reach by car or, if you enjoy pedalling up hills, by bike!

A charming apartment in a traditional Lakeland house. Ideal for walking, cycling, climbing, rowing, sailing and kayaking. Wide choice of shops, cafes, pubs & restaurants in nearby Windermere & Bowness. Main tourist attractions within easy reach.
Willow is a located in tranquil woodland with views towards the mountains and fells. The apartment is part of an extension to Pinethwaite Lodge. The original part of Pinethwaite Lodge dates from the late 19th Century. Willow has a bedroom with double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. The kitchen, dining and living area are all in one room with sink, electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, dining table and chairs, settee and TV. The bathroom has underfloor electric heating, a shower, toilet and wash hand basin. A cot for a baby can be provided on request but please bring bedding for the cot (my children are in their mid 20s now!) Willow and our grounds are not 'child friendly', however. I do not provide child proof plug socket covers or cupboard locks. In addition there are a number of external hazards including a pond, stream and stone steps close to the apartment. Your child/children will need to be supervised at all times. I charge a one off payment of £5.00 for the use of the cot. I can provide a camp bed which fits in the kitchen/dining/living room area if the sofa is moved! It is a bit of a squeeze! If you wish to use the camp bed as well please bring a sleeping bag. I charge a one off hire fee of £5.00 for the use of the camp bed. There is a small courtyard by the entrance with table and chairs. Bicycles can be stored in an undercover storage area next to Willow in our shed.
The Lake District is a year round destination and Pinethwaite Lodge is located near Windermere in the heart of the National Park. Outdoor opportunities are endless: walking, cycling climbing, rowing, sailing and kayaking - all within easy reach and Windermere Golf Club is just up the lane. The main tourist attractions of the southern Lake District are all on the doorstep – Windermere with cruise boats, Beatrix Potter attractions, a cinema in Bowness – and a little further away are the Aquarium of the Lakes, Car Museum, Sizergh Castle and Brockhole Visitor Centre. Bowness and Windermere are within a couple of miles, with a wide choice of shops, tea rooms, cafes and restaurants and modern and traditional pubs. The popular centre of Windermere is surrounded by very accessible vantage points that give glorious views of the surrounding area and lake. Orrest Head, a 784’ hill north of the town, provides one of the finest panoramas – as does School Knott – immediately behind Pinethwaite. Another easy climb is Biskey Howe, a 300’ hill east of Bowness, which has quaint narrow streets and a 15th century church. Windermere, the lake, has fourteen islands, including privately owned Belle Isle with its 18th century round house. Further afield, the list of stately homes, steam railways, lakes and tarns, homes of authors and poets, and fine eating places, is almost endless, all set in the deep valleys and foothills of the Lakeland fells, where some of Britain’s best scrambling and mountain walking may be found. Even in today’s busy world, it is possible still to leave cars and people behind and find solitude in many parts of the Lake District. In addition, Pinethwaite is a haven for wildlife: foxes, badgers, roe deer, and a wide range of birds, from buzzards, to long-tailed tits, warblers, fly catchers, heron, tawny owls and many more.

    * Corona Virus edit: We are still taking bookings. We are in a rural setting with no immediate neighbours * The Bothy at Cowmire Hall is a delightful, first-floor converted farm building, consisting of a hall, large living-room/kitchen open to the roof, a shower-room and double bedroom. There is also a gallery or sleeping-platform above the kitchen area which can be accessed via a ladder from the living room/used as a bedroom at your own risk and there is also a sofa bed in the living room.
The main living area is open plan and vaulted to the ceiling with exposed beams and trusses. A Juliette balcony opens out on to the inner farm yard giving views of Whitbarrow Scar, an impressive limestone escarpment and well worth a walk to the top, where views of the neighbouring valleys and beyond on a clear day are a must. The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of crockery, utensils, serving and cooking dishes, pans, baking trays, making life easy if you want to enjoy home cooking during your stay. It is open plan to the main living space, meaning guests can interact whether relaxing on the sofa or rustling up a delicious meal. There is a large electric range style cooker as well as a microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The Bothy is centrally heated and also has a wood burner - perfect for a night in. Kindling and logs are provided, baskets are stocked on arrival and guests are invited to top up from the woodshed during their stay. The living area had a large TV screen with DVD player, internet is free and is Fibre to home Broadband, giving excellent connection should you need it. Fuel, bed-linen and towels are included. The Bothy sleeps up to six people, with the option of a double bed, sofa bed or two single floor beds on the mezzanine (open to the main living area). Please note that the mezzanine is accessed by a cut out wooden wall ladder. The bathroom has an electric shower, basin, toilet and large linen cupboard. There is a utility room on the ground floor (separate entrance) with use of a sink, washing-machine, tumble-drier, freezer space and space for bicycles etc. There is an outside sitting area with table and barbecue. The Bothy looks out to the south over a farm-yard to Cowmire Hall - a C16 pele tower extended in the late C17, where the owners live - its garden and the Winster Valley. To the north the view is of the farm orchard. There is not any livestock in this yard, though tractors come and go, and our hens have the run of the space during the day. Guests may park cars here. The yard is separated from the main road by a gate, and the house by a wall and gate, giving a safe space for dogs to be off the lead. We would however ask that they are exercised either along the lanes or adjoining fields.
There are 2 local pubs within walking distance of The Bothy, one being the famous Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank and also the Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge. Walking takes about 15/20 minutes to these fantastic pubs, both of which allow dogs.
