Capitol Building
“The structure displays a blend of Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles and was the seat of government until 1959, after the Cuban Revolution. Currently, it's undergoing a major restoration to prepare it as the new home for Cuba's Communist parliament. However, it remains a striking landmark for those wandering around Havana; its huge dome is visible from almost anywhere in the city.”

“About a 15-minute walk from El Morro in the Parque Historico Militar, the huge Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabana, also called the Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana, sits atop La Cabana hill. At the time of its construction in the 1770s, it was the largest fort the Spanish had ever built, as well as the most costly. ”

“Even without any artifact to display, the Museum of the City of Havana would remain an unmissable visit, courtesy of the opulent Palace in which it resides. The Palace of the Captains General is the most important building of the Plaza de Armas and one of the most representative works of baroque architecture in Latin America. It dates from the 1770s and is a manual of Cuban Baroque architecture, carved in rock extracted from the nearby San Lázaro quarries. Occupying the entire west side of the plaza, the palace stands on the site of the demolished Parroquia Mayor, the first church in Havana.”

“In 1940, American novelist Ernest Hemingway bought the Finca la Vigía, a villa on a hill in San Francisco de Paula, 15km southeast of Havana, where he lived continuously for 20 years. Finca Vigia has made both the World Monuments Fund list of 100 Most Endangered sites, and The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Places. It is now a museum and almost unchanged since the day he left.”

“The first professional tattoo parlor in Cuba, La Marca also does double-duty as an art space, community center, and store. They sell a wide variety of tattoo-inspired items, including postcards, stationery, calendars, and souvenirs. If you want a permanent souvenir from your Cuban trip, the tattoo work at La Marca is incredible.”

““The Director’s Kids” is a contemporary dance company that does original, interesting work. The company debuted in 2013 and, thanks to the creativity of its choreographers, quickly achieved tremendous success. They’re based from the 9th floor of the National Theatre of Cuba. It’s an older building, so call ahead to make sure the elevator is working.”
