Nestled into a secret hidden valley, enclosed by wildlife and bush. Once a potter’s workshop this cute cottage, just 2 mins to the beach, has been transformed into a luxury hideaway. Immaculate attention to detail, stylish interiors and landscaped gardens this is an idyllic place for calm, rest and indulgence. Stretch into the day with some yoga and embrace the evening gazing at the night sky, light some candles, fill the outdoor bath with bubbles and enjoy the complimentary bottle of champagne.
Check in time is from 4pm and check out is 10am on day of departure. There is a coded key box for easy access.
On arrival you will receive a bottle of champagne from a local vineyard and if you require flowers, wine, local oysters or other delights on arrival please contact hosts, Katherine and Adam, who will make the necessary arrangements (at extra cost after you have confirmed your booking).
A cleaning fee will be charged to maintain the immaculate presentation inside and out.
The cottage is designed with couples in mind. However, we can accommodate extra family members in the 2nd bedroom and sleep out. Please see 'extra accommodation' below for details and costs.
If you can tear yourself away from the twinkling stars then climb the stairs and sink into a huge super king-sized bed. Every thought has gone into making your sleep perfect with crisp and cool Egyptian cotton bed linen, plump feather filled pillows and blankets and bedding to suit any temperature. And no need to share this room with any insects with clever roll down insect screens on all the windows. With beautifully decorated walls and carefully chosen interiors this is a room to relax the soul and forget about the real world. The only question will be, who’s turn is it to make breakfast in bed! An adjoining ensuite with luxury toiletries, rain shower and view across the lawns to the pond, completes this pampering sensation.
Fancy something even more indulgent, then take a book and soak up the serenity in the outdoor bathroom with a Victoria & Albert bath for two. For summer days spent at the beach, wash off salty skin and sandy toes in the alfresco shower. With plenty of hot and cold water on tap, the super-sized rain head will quickly relax and massage any tired limbs from a day’s adventure in the surf.
Kitchen and living
For those wanting to cook up a culinary delight the fully equipped kitchen has everything you need. Dining is simple: outdoors, outdoors, outdoors! With the sun creating a dancing dapple of light through the ancient eucalyptus and surrounding trees followed by the abundance of lavender, nodding their flowering heads of pink and purple in gratitude to the final rays of sun. This brings ‘dining on the deck’ to a new level of tranquillity and peace. For the full outdoor cooking and dining experience, enjoy canapés and a G&T whilst sinking into the Coast bean bag chairs and if it isn’t too much effort, light up the family sized Webber gas BBQ and eat and drink wine gathered from your days adventures – this is after all, food and wine Matakana!
A few more things to mention
The 2 bathrooms comprise of an ensuite to the upstairs master bedroom, with an enclosed rain shower, small hand basin and toilet. Bathroom 2 is all about alfresco bathing, with a large bath set on the deck (big enough for 2!) and a separate luxury rain shower (the 2nd toilet is located in the utility room along with the washing machine, tumble dryer and additional sink).
For those cosy winter evenings light the dinky wood burner in the living area, with plenty of logs available to keep the fire stoked. The cottage is north facing to catch as much of the sunshine and light as possible, but still remains a cool oasis in the heat of the summer months. Of course the heat pump can make it as perfect as you desire.
Parking is in abundance, with room for your boat or motorhome! Bring the toys too as the barn can securely store bikes, kayaks, SUPS, whatever your pleasure. With Matheson Bay a 2 minute drive or a 10 minute walk and Omaha beach and Pakiri within striking distance, this is a sea lovers paradise. Leigh boat ramp is available to launch from, free of charge, just a 5 minute drive away.
There are additional options for sleeping arrangements including a small room with bunk beds inside the cottage and a sleep-out with Queen bed (use of bathroom facilities at the cottage approximately 10 metres away). Extra cost for use of these rooms is $50 per person per night. This will be calculated for you when putting in your dates and number of people staying.
Whilst we allow children to stay by prior arrangement only, please be aware that there is a large pond in the grounds, without fencing and therefore not suitable for young children (under 6 years). Please enquire for further information prior to booking.

Head to the beach
With so many beautiful beaches to choose from here are just a few favourites:
Matheson Bay is the local beach and what a spot. Walk straight from the cottage along the leafy driveway, across the village road and wind your way down a stunning waterfall and bush clad boardwalk. Sheltered, sandy and great for swimming or kayaking. Look in the house book for the local’s secret spot! Or if you fancy something wild and dramatic, Pakiri beach is a vast expanse of white sand, huge dunes and views to take your breath away. Pack a picnic and just start walking – the beach will be all yours in a few minutes with only dolphins and orcas to keep you company.
Head to Omaha beach for something a little gentler and ideal for improving those surfing techniques, stop off at Sculptureum or one of the boutique cafes along the way.
For the absolute nature lover, Anchor Bay in Tawharanui Regional Park will have you feeling like you are on a tropical island. With white sand and turquoise waters, bush walks, caves to explore and the occasional dolphin pod to play with, this is the ultimate day out.
Walk and explore
Pack a picnic and head off and explore the many walks in the area. Whether it’s a stunning bush clad boardwalk, passing waterfalls as you meander down to the local beach, or something a little more exhilarating like a coastal cliff walk or perhaps a gentle stroll around the harbour to reach a beach unattainable by road, there is plenty to explore without leaving the village!
Move and groove
Home to the famous Sawmill Café, the local villagers will have you dancing until the wee hours. Whatever your taste in music, there is something for everyone and with pretty gardens for dining, it’s a favourite choice for a late supper and a jig!
Eat and drink
Matakana is well known for being food and wine heaven and with the famous boutique Matakana market only 10 minutes down the road it will inspire even the most reluctant cook to create a mouth-watering menu featuring the best of local produce. Don’t forget to pick up your tray of fresh Matakana Oysters on your way through, or have them waiting on ice for you with a bottle of bubbly (by prior arrangement with the owner).
If bubbles aren’t your tipple then visit one of the many wineries in the area to find your favourite. And if that still doesn’t hit the spot then there is the Vintry wine bar, Matakana Pub and Smiths wine bar to quench your thirst.
If you can tear yourself away from Songbird Cottage the local dining experiences are second to none with favourites being pizza at the Sawmill Café, fine dining at Rothko’s @ Sculptureum, the Stables Restaurant and Smiths Bar, Tapas at the Sawmill Brewery, pre-movie dining at Matakana Market Kitchen and our favourite, Vietnamese takeaway from Viet Q.
Shop til you drop
With a boutique village like Matakana, there can only be boutique shops! Shoes, books, clothes, homewares, art, ceramics and of course a perfect little chocolate shop. For the more discerning shopper, there are eclectic collectable shops dotted around the area. Travel slightly further afield to Mangawhai or Warkworth for more shopping treasures.
Fore! There is a stunning golf course at Omaha when you fancy a break from the beach or travel further afield for the world class course at Mangawhai. For those seeking a bit more drama then head to Pakiri Horse riding and join one of their daily adventures. There is nothing more exhilarating than galloping along a white sandy beach.
Hit the waves – from learning to surf, kayaking, SUPing, kitesurfing, snorkelling and diving, there is a host of water activities for the eager novice or experienced, serious type. With Goat Island Marine Reserve just 5 minutes down the road, explore one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots in New Zealand.
Bobbing about on the water – Launch your boat from the local slipway for free and explore Little Barrier, Great Barrier or the Mokohinau Islands. Head over to the prestigious Sandspit Marina and for a small fee you can be on your way to Kawau Island to visit the stunning Mansion House and a spot of lunch at the Kawau Boating Club or for something a little finer make a dining reservation at the Beach House.
Take in some art and culture
Take in a movie at the boutique Matakana Cinemas (remembering to order a glass of wine from the Vintry wine bar), a pottery tour at the famous Morris and James Pottery, an original art collection at the Vivian Gallery, a stroll around the delectable Sculpturuem or a walk around the sculpture trail at Brick Bay wines. The Songbird Cottage house book will list all the local galleries and places to explore for you to peruse at your leisure.
