Food and Drinks!
The three seafood restaurants in town open for lunch by noon and close by 6:00 pm for dinner. You can also usually buy fish from the local fishermen as they come in each day with their catch if you prefer to cook your own. There are more choices for restaurants in Dzidzantun and Dzilam de Bravo and the ones in Dzidzantun in the centro are open later into the evening for dinner.
We recommend you do your shopping for food and drinks before arriving in Santa Clara as the local shops in town carry a few basics only. If you are coming from Merida there are many excellent grocery stores there to pick up whatever you need. There are also smaller grocery stores in Dzilam de Bravo Dzidzantun and Dzilam de Bravo, 10-15 minutes by car. You can get fresh meat, eggs, vegetables and fruits in the markets in both towns. There is also a Carne Max in Dzidzantun which has a good selection of meats.
There are two beer stores in town (Six and Corona) where you can buy beer, sodas, chips etc. There is a Six in Dzilam de Bravo that also carries a small selection of alcohol (Vodka, run, tequila). You won’t be able to find wine locally so if that is your preference, be sure to plan ahead!
The beer stores usually sell bags of ice. The property does not have an ice maker so plan to purchase ice locally.
Fishing Trips and Boat Rides
For those who enjoy fishing, we work with a local fisherman to offer fishing trips to our guests. Bring your favorite rod and reel or try your hand at fishing with just a line as the fishermen traditionally do.
The fishing tour operator also offers boat rides for an opportunity to get out on the water and see Santa Clara from the ocean.
Santa Clara is a very safe, peaceful fishing town with 20 families in residence year round. The property is gated with cameras around the palapa, pool and parking areas for extra security.
Parking is available on the property at no charge for guests.
Off the usual tourist path, this location offers an idyllic getaway with as much or as little to do as you would like. The Mayan culture, customs, language and food are prominent here; there are multiple ruins sites within an hour driving distance that are hundreds of years old. Merida, La Ciudad Blanca (the White City) as it's known, features a stunning array of colonial architecture, museums, Yucatecan cuisine and night life. The Yucatan Peninsula features some 6,000+ cenotes (or sinkholes), more than half of which have never been officially studied and registered. Some are subterranean with stalactites and tree roots growing down to the water while others are ground level with crystal clear blue waters; all offer a refreshing way to cool off!
If you prefer to enjoy a lazy day, lounge around the pool, go for a long walk on the beach, enjoy some fresh fish and octopus ceviche and a cold beer in one of the local restaurants, or get lost in a good book in a shady hammock.
The Gulf of Mexico offers yet another escape for our visitors. Take a cruise along the coast, go for an early morning fishing trip or anchor off a deserted beach or sand bar to fish or relax with a cold beer in the shallow clear waters.
In the summers, you can see the sun rise and set over the ocean. The waters are a clear aqua green and full of sea turtles, all kinds of fish, octopus, crab and lobster. You can even spot a pod of dolphins off the shore from time to time.
