Cave
“In the village of Melidoni you will find the Melidoni Caves, where there is a number of very impressive stalactites and stalagmites. In 1823 the Ottoman army besieged the caves where approximately 370 inhabitants, mainly women and children, were hiding. Under the orders of Hussein Bay, the entrance was jammed with flammable materials and set on fire. After the Turks left, the bones were collected and placed in an ossuary which now stands in the middle of the central chamber. If you decide to visit the Caves, please wear sturdy shoes, as the ground may be slippery and we suggest you take a torch to enter the chambers.”

Monastery
“Cretans are proud of Arkadi's monastery history. It is the Holocaust of November 8th 1866. The Monastery gave its fights against Ottomans. It managed to shake off the traces that the enemy fiercely desired to settle and succeeded in changing the course of the Cretan history.”

History Museum
“The Maritime Museum of Crete is housed at the Venetian Firka fortress, placed at the entrance of the old harbor in Chania. This location has historical importance because on December, 1st, 1913, the Greek flag was raised there and signaled the unification of Crete with the Greek state. The initial idea behind the museum was to build a place that would depict the Greek naval tradition and especially the naval history of Crete.”

The beach of Pachia Ammos is so big that it rarely feels overcrowded even in high summer, when you are surrounded by hundreds of people. Falassarna beach is fully organised, with umbrellas and loungers covering most of the area. However, there are several free spots if you choose bring your own towel and beach umbrellas. History Museum
“The Historical Museum of Crete was founded by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies in 1953, following the issue of a Ministry of Culture permit to establish a museum collection. The Museum was initially housed in the Andreas and Maria Kalokerinos House (1903), a listed neoclassical building granted by the A. & M. Kalokerinos Foundation in accordance with the donor’s wishes. The Museum was founded and is run by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, with the aim of preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of Crete from early Byzantine times to the modern era. This aim has been achieved gradually, by the collection, purchase and donation of artefacts, together with artefacts on long term loan from the Ministry of Culture. From its beginnings, the Historical Museum of Crete has been animated by a pioneering spirit. Successive extensions to the museum and recent re-displays, using contemporary perceptions in museology and new media applications, have contributed to creating a lively, up-to-date, visitor-friendly museum. The HMC now offers a composite view of Cretan history and art from the early Christian centuries to the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions cover a wide span, ranging from Byzantine to modern art, showcasing key literary figures in Greece (Elytis, Kazantzakis), and presenting major historical events from the late 19th century to the Second World War. At the same time, our educational programmes are constantly being enriched. Offered free of charge, they are a creative source of knowledge relating to the Museum’s permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Lectures, symposia, film shows and book presentations held in the amphitheatre add to activities at the Historical Museum of Crete, rendering it an outgoing, multi-faceted cultural organization.”

Beach
“Elafonissi is located 76 kilometers southwest of Chania and five kilometers south of Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, at the southwest end of Crete. Elafonissi looks like an island, because the peninsula at the point that connects with Crete "breaks" and gives the feeling of a separate island. The area has been included in the Natura Protected Areas and is a refuge for the Careta careta turtle. It is strictly forbidden to cut plants from there or to take sand even from the shore! In Elafonissi you will get to the road from Kissamos in about an hour even by bus from KTEL. The road to Elafonissi is narrow and full of turns, but the beauty of the landscape will compensate for you. More choices for accommodation and food can be found in Chryssoskalitissa, located five kilometers north and there you will see the famous Monastery of Panagia Chrysoskalitissa. The beach stretches over long stretches, mainly east of the lagoon. It is organized, it has everything (and special parking space) and especially during the summer months is flooded by people. The shallow lagoon is ideal for young but also for the grown-ups who are willing to play with sand and water! At some points the color of the sand is not white but pink, which is created by the millions of broken shells you will see there. The shores of Elafonisi are more remote and if you want to be a bit more isolated, walk until you find the cove that suits you. The tour of the island is easy to walk.”
