We do a thorough clean after each guest has checked out, but do not offer a daily cleaning service unless by special arrangement. If you are staying for 4 days or more, we will make arrangements at your convenience to clean and change the linen and towels. Please let us know what your preferences are. There is a washing machine, dryer and washing line on the premises that you are welcome to use. An iron and ironing board are available.
In the case of power outages or load shedding, which hopefully will not interrupt your stay, we have alternate lighting and gas facilities available for cooking and heating.
• The house has a metal roof, and as the temperature drops in the evening, you may hear “ticking” sounds as it cools down.
• One of the benefits of modern design is great light and air circulation so there are lots of windows in the house. If you are particularly light sensitive or your sleeping patterns are interrupted by sunlight, these windows may bother you.
• During heavy rain and the periodic hail storms that the city does experience it can get quite loud! Embrace it as part of the soundtrack to life in Johannesburg!
• When small children come to stay we try and “child proof” the house as best as possible but please move anything you need to for peace of mind!
Parkhurst is a thriving residential suburb in the north of Johannesburg with a busy central street, 4th Avenue, where most of the restaurants and shops can be found. There is something for everyone in Parkhurst, a neighbourhood pub (the Jolly Roger), a wonderful ice cream shop, a good liquor store, a wide range of restaurants, furniture, clothing and gift stores, Pilates studios and gyms, beauty salons, a pharmacy and services such as doctors, laundries and others. Please see our directory for a better sense of what is available. Just a block away from House @ 54 there is small convenience store which sells the basics; bread, milk, etc. and just a little further on there is the Parkhurst Recreation Centre which has a swimming pool that is open in the summer months and a range of programmes every day.
While is there no supermarket in Parkhurst, there are a Pick n Pay and a Woolworths food store very close by, a 6-minute drive, at the Terrace Shopping Centre in Victory Park. There is also a Virgin Active gym, Dischem pharmacy and Postnet postal service at this centre. There is a smaller Woolworths Food in Greenside, a 7-minute drive away.
There is a fresh food market, one of the many in Johannesburg, at Pirates Club every Sunday morning which has a wide selection of goodies on sale.
There is a very active mountain biking route along the Braamfontein Spruit of up to 50 km. “The Spruit” as it is known, is an easy to intermediate ride. There is more information on the route at www.mtbroutes/braamfontein-spruit-closest-citytown-emmarentia.
Verity Park is the Parkhurst dog walking park, so if you want to meet the local canine population, this park is where you need to see and be seen! The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, incorporating Emmarentia Dam, is less than 10 minutes’ drive away, and Delta Park, which has incredible views over the city is about 6 minutes’ drive from Parkhurst. Delta Park has a lovely area for children to play with swings and jungle gyms. The Green Room at the Pirates Bowls Club in Greenside has a play area and on the weekends a jumping castle if you are looking for a child friendly venue.
