“Located in the heart of Yerba Buena Gardens, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents cutting-edge, contemporary visual art, performances, film/video and community engagement programs that celebrate innovation and experimentation by local, national and international artists working today. Distinguished by its support for contemporary artists from around the world, YBCA is also recognized for the important role the organization plays in the San Francisco Bay Area arts ecology and in the community at large. Artistically, YBCA is decidedly “cutting edge,” presenting and exhibiting work by artists who are pushing the boundaries of their art in form and/or content.”

“The GLBT Historical Society Museum, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Castro District, is the first stand-alone museum of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history and culture in the United States. At 1,600 square feet (150 square meters), the museum, while small, packs a powerful punch, celebrating the city’s vast queer past through dynamic and surprising exhibitions and programming. ”

“It’s rare to find a stone building in San Francisco that predates the 1906 earthquake, so this 1874 survivor is a real gem. The Mint borrows its Doric columns, entablature, and pediment from the architecture of ancient Greek temples, but the architect, Alfred B. Mullett, used a later Roman interpretation of the Greek style on this imposing landmark. Check out the Mint’s public calendar to see when you can get inside.”

“One of the most photographed locations in San Francisco, Alamo Square's famous "postcard row" at Hayes and Steiner Streets is indeed a visual treat. A tight, escalating formation of Victorian houses is back-dropped by downtown skyscrapers, providing a stunning contrast. The grassy square itself is an ideal midday break. One of 11 historic districts designated by the Department of City Planning, the area includes several bed and breakfast inns.”

“The first Noe Valley Branch building was built using a grant provided by Andrew Carnegie and featured a two-story building with a Spanish-style facade of brick and terra cotta. It was completed in 1916. In 2008 the branch was renovated and recognized with the Governor's Historic Preservation Award. The renovated Noe Valley Branch has also been hailed for its green features- lighting, low-water plants, and the use of recycled plastic materials. During the 1970s, Noe Valley residents built a deck and a community garden adjacent to the library. A nice place to relax and enjoy a book or just take a look around.”
