After several years of using Airbnb, this was my first negative experience. The location of this rental in Whistler Village is great, and it is in a nice building with concierge, parking and other amenities. There were two problems, however. The smaller problem was that soon after my fiancée and I paid for our reservation, Taylor informed us that the washing machine was broken. He did not offer to fix it until we pressed him, but he was very communicative and seemed to try his best, and when he could not fix it in time he offered us a reasonable partial refund for that issue.
The main problem occurred when we arrived: the entire condo was filthy. In order to be able to stay there we had to spend quite a bit of time cleaning, which is not how we had hoped to spend our vacation time. There was dust everywhere. So much dirt and cat hair on the couch that we did not sit on it, even after I vacuumed it (and the vacuum cleaner did not work very well). The oven and stove were filthy inside and out with dark crusty crud. We did not even use the oven for this reason. We washed the stove top, and bought new "Handi-foils" for the burners (I left the remainders under the sink.) There was what appeared to be cat litter on the carpet in the bedroom, and the floors everywhere were dirty. There was dust on all surfaces, including picture frames, clothing shelves, etc. The bathroom tiles and joints, including in the shower, were dirty. I had to pull gobs of rotting hair out of the bathroom sink drain. The refrigerator was dirty, and smelled of leaking condiments. Even the dishes and pots that were supposedly ready to be used in the cupboards were dirty and needed washing.
I raised this issue in an amicable way with Taylor and asked for more of a refund, in addition to the washer refund. I did not think we should have to pay a cleaning fee, and I thought the disappointment and time spent cleaning deserved a reasonable reimbursement. He made an unacceptable lower counter offer, but then stopped communicating with us. He also at one point changed his profile picture to a woman's photo. We had to ask Airbnb to intervene, and they sent us the refund we had requested.
I should also mention that the furniture is pretty haphazard, including a broken bookshelf in the living room, and a couple of yard sale bookshelves and cabinets crammed into the bedroom. This is unnecessary because there is room for a nice built-in in the bedroom where there is now wasted space. It could be a lovely place with a modest investment of time and money. I hope Taylor learns from this experience and takes a more professional approach to his responsibilities if he tries to rent this condo in the future. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this rental.
