No need to check in with anyone which makes arriving easy and stress-free. The cabin will be unlocked with the key waiting on the stove, and if you're arriving after sunset, we'll leave the lights on to welcome you.
As our guest, you'll have exclusive access to 172 acres of Scurlock Farms, a working farm that has been in our family for generations. Enjoy miles of peaceful walks through pastures and beneath towering live oaks, search for fossils along the animal trails, explore the banks of the San Gabriel River, hunt for ancient fossils in the river banks and our spring-fed creek, and keep an eye out for deer, wild turkeys, roadrunners, painted buntings, and countless other native wildlife.
We invite you to slow down, explore, and experience the farm at your own pace.
Unlike most vacation rentals, your stay includes complimentary access to 172 acres of private Texas countryside to explore and enjoy.

Private River Access: The San Gabriel River borders the North side of our 172-acre farm. While it isn't visible from the cabin, it's only about a five-minute walk or a short drive through the pasture, where you can enjoy fishing, fossil hunting, birdwatching, tubing, or just sitting in the water listening to the water and the birdsong.
We are an extremely pet-friendly farm stay: Well-behaved dogs are welcome to enjoy the farm with you! They do not need to be crated or kept on a leash while exploring the property. Furniture covers are provided for your convenience. Guests tell us their pets enjoyed their farm stay as much as they did!
Please note that there is no fenced yard, so you'll want to keep an eye on your furry companion. A one-time $70 pet fee covers up to two dogs, and they are not required to be crated. Please be sure and use the furniture covers that are provided to cover any furniture they might like to be on.
We are on a septic system, so please nothing other than toilet paper in the commode, not even disposable wipes which catch on the pipe joints and can cause blockages.
There is no disposal in the sink, so when draining the kitchen sink, leave the drain cover in the sink to catch any food debris in the water. There is a jar in the refrigerator for any bacon grease or oils.
For extended stays, a modern laundromat is just a few minutes away. Exterior security cameras are on the property.
The listing is for two adults, but if you are bringing an infant, let me know. A Porta-Crib/Travel Crib
is available for your use. Just let me know if you are bringing an infant and I will have it at the home before your arrival.
Country evenings are dark because there are no streetlights. If returning after dark, leave the porch light on before heading out; clear nights offer spectacular stargazing.

The Palette Pad is located on Scurlock Farms, a 172 acre working farm. We raise cattle, goats, chickens and have two horses. All of the critters love to be fed and the horses love to be brushed. There is also a 20 acre pecan orchard and pecan harvest is in November. The farm is in the Texas hill country and has very varied terrain - from the flat prairie hay pastures on top, to the heavily wooded bluffs that run down the middle of the farm, to the river bottom and pecan orchard. The San Gabriel River forms the north one mile border of the farm. The fishing is good and in the spring and summer the tubing is great (when we are not in drought conditions). There are many fossils in the wide white limestone riverbanks. Children LOVE throwing rocks in the river and never want to leave when we are on the tours.
Scurlock Farms is just a 10 minute drive to Georgetown and Southwestern University, 20 minutes to Dell Diamond and Kalahari Water Park, 30 minutes to Austin, and 75 minutes to Waco and Magnolia. We are in a perfect spot to use the farm for a base camp to return to after taking day trips around central Texas.
