One of the best kept secrets of Bocas Del Toro, the Reef Cabin is your own slice of paradise. Situated above the southern reef of remote Isla San Cristobal, you can enjoy the unique adventure activities of off the grid- living. Fully engage with nature while enjoying the comforts of rustic charm.

ที่พัก

Welcome to our Tropical Island Paradise on the Southern tip of Isla San Cristobal in the Bocas Del Toro Archipelago. The island has no roads or electricity but we support ourselves with solar panels, a backup generator and a rainwater collection system.

You'll be staying in The Reef Cabin, two rooms, perched above the island's coral reef. The Sunrise Room sleeps 3 people, in a dorm style room with 2 single beds and a double. The room offers a rustic experience with low cane walls and curtains for your privacy. The sea breeze will make you forget about air conditioning, but there is also a fan if you are feeling the Panamanian heat!

If your group is larger than 4, the Reef Cabin has a second bedroom for rent, with a queen sized bed, called the Diving Board Room. Both Rooms are above the shared kitchen and living space equipped with hammocks, swing chairs and sun loungers for your ultimate relaxation. All guests at the retreat do have use of the common dock and kitchen.

We offer deliciously prepared meals, served family style for our guests.

There is a freshwater shower (biodegradable soap only, please!) at the Reef Cabin, and the composting toilet is a 2 minute walk away.

Beneath you, there is lots of aquamarine life: starfish, our resident nurse shark, octopus, colorful fish, a family of snappers, and of course the dolphins (see them during the day, hear them at night), amazing coral and magical bioluminescence in the water at night!

Other options on the property include 3 cabins along the waters edge, 1 waterfront house, and a house perched up on the Hill. These listings are more removed from the common area and offer a more private experience, feel free to ask for links to them via a Secluded Tropical Reef Inquiry.

Clean linens and towels are provided for all guests. Spices, cooking oils, and other kitchen basics are provided for your use, along with fresh young coconut juice, bananas, and other fresh goods from the property. (Cilantro, lemongrass, and citruses galore grow all around the Hill House!)

A 5 minute boat ride (or half an hour kayak or an hour swim :-)) takes you across the bay where you can buy (limited!) supplies or visit Ernie for his famous fried chicken.

A 30-minute each way, $70 round trip boat ride will take you to the town of Bocas del Toro, which has over a dozen bars and restaurants, a fun backpacker party scene, some very good food, some not-so-good food, an airport, several small supermarkets, local fruit and vegetable stands, and lots of local color and diversity. A similar boat trip will take you to the mainland (Almirante), a jumping off point for extended trips to Panama's incredible cloud forest or Costa Rica.

Bring your sunscreen, bug spray, and your bathing suit! It's tropical adventure time!

สิ่งอื่นที่ควรรู้

!!! IMPORTANT: THIS IS A RUSTIC PLACE!!!

It's for the adventurous, who want reasonable comfort in a remote setting, and want to experience realities of rural life in the tropics. In addition to the abundant pleasures of the lush forests and reefs, you should expect to…..
GO OFF GRID: You will run out of running water if you take long showers or if the rains don't come. The solar panels are backed with batteries, but you'll need to remember to turn off lights and fans when not in use — especially when the clouds hang out for a few days. The Internet is fast and reliable — but it does go down on occasion.

WEAR BUG PROTECTION: Around dusk and dawn chitras (sand flies or no-see-ums) show up without fail. Luckily they are predictable creatures, and a layer of coconut oil or bug-spray will keep you happy.

Help yourself to any fruit you find on the farm (but ask if you're not sure what it is :)

Please be responsible with electricity use (if there is no sunshine for a couple of days, batteries can run low).

Likewise, but less critically, with water. The tanks last for about a month with no rain, but please conserve.

This was by far the best getaway my husband and I have ever experienced! For our 20 year anniversary, we were looking for something off the beaten path, and we wanted more comfort than camping but nothing like a resort or tourist magnet. This experience was perfect, and offered far more than we ever could have hoped for. On the very first day, we awoke to dolphins in the bay, saw fish, octopus, coral, and light-up rainbow jellyfish while snorkeling, sloths while on a hike, and swam in luminescence at night! The best part was that none of it was a "tourist attraction." We paid no money for tours or experiences... it was all on the island just waiting to be explored. Lazare and Carmen are the couple that manage the property, and we are incredibly thankful to now call them friends. They made us feel beautifully at home from the moment we arrived, prepared incredible meals (accommodating my vegetarian diet with amazing fresh local foods), and created a mood of peace, serenity, and community throughout our stay. We stayed in the "Mangrove Treehouse," a gorgeous and artistic two story loft on the water... a minimalist and naturally furnished heaven on the reef, sided entirely in screens... I could live there! So, aside from the fact that we eventually wanted to return home to see our 4 kids again, my husband and I actually had a very difficult time leaving this island paradise and the beautiful people we met. We are already planning to return with our children someday! To say the least, I highly recommend this experience!

The reef cabin is a unique spot which allows one to relax in a secluded location amongst nature. The water off of the main dock is super clear and the reef is truly something spectacular to have access to whenever you wish. We spent quite a bit of time swimming and snorkeling with all of the marine life it's home to. There was a paddle board, kayaks, and some snorkel gear. We even took a hike around the property and saw some sloths! Anyone whose looking for a laid back, nature experience off the beaten path, there is much to enjoy here.

Our stay at CocoVivo with Lazare and Carmen was amazing. It was truly a relaxing little paradise. The activities were great- we saw a sloth while walking around the property, and there was snorkeling literally right off the deck with better snorkeling than we saw anywhere else in the area. We did a day trip to an incredible white sand beach, and took a jaunt to the island across the way to have the most fresh delicious chicken around. Lazare and Carmen are incredibly friendly hosts, and amazing cooks. The breakfast and dinners were pretty out of this world. There are two dogs there that I also promptly fell in love with (you will too!) If you are looking for an off the grid paradise, then this is it! Just make sure to bring good energy, suncreen, and bug spray :)

The place was amazing! Carmen and Lazare are incredible hosts! We loved our time at Coco Vivo! We got to see sloths and howler monkeys during the hike and saw different fish when snorkeling. Kayaking over to Ernest's was also super fun and the fried chicken was amazing! I wish we could've stayed longer and I would definitely visit again!(Especially for Capitan and Nanoosh!)

The water was crystal clear. Snorkeling and kayaking available anytime to see the gorgeous coral and many fish. On an easy hike, you can spot sloths. Gourmet meals were served on the hanging table while cool breezes kept you comfortable. Carmen and Lazar were amazing hosts that were willing to do whatever we asked. Their laid back approach was perfect for a relaxing vacation. what more could you ask for???

This place was amazing! Remote, rustic, gorgeous. Simple accommodation and super friendly hosts. One of the attributes I most enjoyed besides the moonlight nights, bioluminescent waters, vibrant snorkeling, turquoise waters, dolphin sightings, and early morning monkey howls was the generosity and authenticity of the hosts. They match perfectly the vibe and environment--- friendly, stress-free, engaging, sweet, and timeless. Not only were they attentive to the needs of my and my travel mate, but I noticed that they were flexible and responsive to all their guests' needs. This is a great place to visit if you are up for a mellow, low key, not fancy but beautiful place to get away from it all. Thanks Carmen and Laz! I can't wait to come back!

We spent five nights at Coco Viva and absolutely loved it! The snorkeling is fantastic and you can see luminescent plankton at night. Must love geckos! They are plentiful but generally stay away from you. Carmen & Lazare have the perfect personalities to host guests from all over the world. They are knowledgeable and friendly and contribute to the laid back atmosphere. I would highly recommend getting the meal plan, which, at the time of my stay was $25 per person, per day. You will get a very generous, healthy, and delicious breakfast & dinner. There were vegans staying at the same time so we had several vegan meals and I did not miss red meat at all. The combinations of fruits, vegetables, rice, and sauces were beautifully prepared, creative, and extremely filling. Personally, I did not need lunch but my boyfriend brought snacks for that part of the day. Plenty of free coffee and water are available as well as beer & soda for sale. If you are staying in the house above the kitchen, you are in the "social area". This was perfect for us as we could mix with the other guests or go up to our room for reading or a nap. Coco Viva attracts people from all over and they all seem to be very laid back and looking for relaxation. The guests were very fun to interact with. We took a short tour with Lazare to look at sloths and the island is full of lush, dense, tropical trees and plants. The trip was truly magical for us and I would recommend it to my friends! I would not recommend it for people with children or anyone who is uncomfortable using non-modern toilets. Basically, they are porta potties built into private rooms. No worries for us. Let me finish by mentioning the food once again. Wonderful!
