Privacy & historic ambiance beside Averett Univ. Sunny & quiet. Private bath recently remodeled w/ new travertine shower. Room furnished with antique iron bed (ca. 1890), desk, 1905 wardrobe, & comfy 1920s chair. Cable TV in adjacent room.

This house was designed in 1913 by Virginia's foremost residential architect of the time, J. Bryant Heard, known for his use of millwork and his transitional use of neo-classical and arts & crafts elements. The house is directly across the street from Averett University (to be precise, across from the library). Your room has lots of light -- five windows, but there are pull-down shades in case you're photophobic! There's a small desk, suitable for studying or use of a laptop, and there's a big, 1920's vintage comfy chair. Your private bathroom has a huge travertine shower (there is no tub).

In addition to your bed & bath suite, you'll have access to the breakfast room (where the cable TV is located (just adjacent to your room), living room, and porch. There is no gym, but a new gym and pool are available at a newly opened YMCA facility approximately one mile away (a twenty-minute walk or a three-minute drive). There's also an enormous park, Ballou Park, just a couple of blocks away. Laundry facilities are adjacent to your room, if you need them. There's also a back yard (a crape myrtle forest in progress) that you can use for all your Zen moments.
.
This is an old house, build with copious amounts of stucco, plaster, and lathing. The wifi signal does not always travel perfectly throughout the house. Consequently, I use a range extender to boost the signal and improve service, and I can affirm that the signal is better than many hotels in which I have stayed. (Free guest access to wifi is also available across the street at the Averett University Library.) FYI, I use the internet service for Netflix, and I find no problems.
.
I'm delighted to direct you to good restaurants, give you driving directions, get you onto the Averett campus, or help in any way that I can. If you prefer total solitude, you can certain have that here. The house is big enough that you needn't interact if that isn't your wish. In fact, there's a back entrance that you can use to give yourself a little more privacy in your coming and going.
.
This is a friendly neighborhood -- a good place to take a walk or go for a run. Several of the neighbors have been featured on recent Danville garden tours. Ballou Park, one of the oldest municipal parks in America, is just a few blocks up the street. Ballou boasts towering oaks and pine trees, trails, and recreation facilities. Walking to the Dan River (about a mile) takes you to some upscale restaurants and to a river-side trail. You'll also walk past the Sutherlin Mansion, now the city museum, but once the last capital of the Confederacy in April of 1865!
.
There is public transportation, and a bus line goes directly by the house. However, a car is needed if you're going to do much sightseeing in the area. If you're doing anything at Averett University, it's just cross the street. The newly opened YMCA offers fantastic gym and pool facilities one mile away -- two minutes by car or about a 15 to 20-min. walk.
.
Verten snakker norsk -- og forstår svensk og dansk -- kann auch ein bißl Deutsch sprechen. From here, it's only a short drive to VIR, Martinsville Speedway, Smith Mountain Lake, Fairystone Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, Primland Resort, Morrisett Winery, and 50 minutes to Greensboro Airport, or just over an hour to the Raleigh-Durham Airport.

There's plenty of parking on the street. Ignore the "Permit Parking Only" signs. (I would have to call the police before they would tow anyone.)

Guests must read the "Amenities" section of this listing and check out the photos in order to know what this Airbnb facility is like prior to booking. It is unfair and unjust to arrive with erroneous expectations that would have been corrected simply by checking the information provided in this Airbnb listing. Read before you book. If you offer any negative review that results from your failure to have heeded information provided in this listing, it will be reported to Airbnb as a violation of house rules. I work hard to get good reviews. I highly recommend anyone needing accommodations in the Danville area to stay here. While it is only a Private Room, the house is set up for a lot of privacy for guests. Easy entry, very comfortable bed, perfect location, parking right in front of the house. The bathroom is connected to the room and has good space for travel toiletries. Lovely historic home. Host William is available at all times to answer a call, text, etc. An excellent experience!

You absolutely cannot go wrong with William's place. The house is beautiful, charming, and comfortable, and William is the most gracious and accommodating host. He shows the perfect balance between being available for questions and recommendations to also giving you your privacy. I really enjoyed hearing the fascinating stories of his travels. The beds are so comfortable, I found myself not wanting to get out of them in the morning. I am not one to label anything as perfect very often, but you simply cannot get better accommodations in Danville. I will definitely be a repeat customer.

Both Airbnb host & also guest in my frequent travels. History nut; smitten with Wanderlust -- 49 states & over 20 countries. Speak fluent Norwegian; read & understand Danish; speak somewhat passable Swedish & rusty German. Likes include: DIY projects, auctions, architectural salvage, home grown tomatoes, the midnight sun, profiteroles, Carolina barbecue, Fredrick Douglas, Friedrich Hayek, & Fredrick the Great. Best movie was the original 1939 version of The Women. Worst movie was the 2008 re-make of The Women. Dislikes include: The charade that's called "TSA" in all our airports, servers who say that you can make sweet tea by adding sugar to unsweetened iced tea, escargots (they're slugs, for heaven's sake), uncomfortable shoes, English ivy (urban kudzu), ethanol, Antonio Gramsci, and, worst of all, Airbnb guests who fail to read the listing description and then complain about things that were clearly explained in the listing.
