Sapa is a great place to base yourself and shop beside the locals who frequent the Saturday market.
If you're looking to escape the tourist buses, head a bit further afield to Bac Ha.
There are 10 Montagnard hill tribe groups who live around Bac Ha in the highlands, and many make the trek down from the mountains for their big shopping day. Some hill tribe people have to walk up to 30 kilometres through the mountains to get there, with all their goods in tow on the way back.

Julie was the absolute best. She's very responsive in her communication and always ready to help. I had some unexpected health issues while staying with her and she was more than accommodating. Her entire staff were beyond friendly. I can't recommend her enough!

The staff at Julie's hostel were very accommodating. They made sure I caught the right train to Sapa and were there when I arrived to take me back to the hostel. Any questions I had were answered and all of the details were taken care of for me!

We stayed in Julie's hostel for a night prior to getting the night train and beginning the trekking in Sapa. Julie and all staff couldn't do enough to help; from insisting on carrying luggage to ensuring we got safely to the train and back, to giving us some drinks and snacks for the train. While the weather in Sapa was unseasonably poor, our trekking was modified but this was out of anybody's control. The hotel in Sapa was ideal, with food and hot drinks available all of the time. The homestay was an excellent experience and the food made by the family was delicious! We really appreciated the use of hotel rooms at either end of the trip to shower and ready ourselves for our next destination. It was an unforgettable stay and a lot of this was due to Julie and her staff!!

Julie organized everything for me, she was of great help and had precious advices. She made the all experience smooth and even more enjoyable. She knows what she is doing, she is professional, efficient, she pays attention ... she is the best! I booked 2 other tours with her afterwards, both were great.

I booked this 4 night/3 day trekking trip with Julie and she was genuinely the most helpful person to have dealt with. I had lots of questions about times for tours and had to change some dates and nothing was ever a problem. She always got back to me within a few hours. When I finally got to meet Julie in person, she was the most friendly person ever!! As a solo female traveller, I had nothing to worry about with this tour. All transfers were included and there was someone to help at every step!! There was one full days walking and two half days and the price is slightly cheaper than other similar tours on offer from Hanoi.

Julie was fantastic. Well organised tour, good value and she was extremely responsive and helpful with my ad hoc requests (airport transfers, last min accom.) Good amount of trekking on day 1 straight off the train so be prepared those of you less active! home stay was basic as expected and clean. Good experience. Would definitely recommend. Old Quarter hostel is excellent value and very clean with simple tasteful decor. Would definitely come back to stay. Beats the 5* apricot Hotel I stayed in before. Thanks Julie!
