Discover Dower House Cottage, a charming three bedroom Grade II listed cottage nestled between working stables and lush pastures leading to the River Trent. With pretty bedrooms, a cozy dining room, oriental-inspired sitting room, country kitchen and traditional bathroom - this genuine vintage cottage is sure to delight. Wander into the village and find a quaint tea shop, traditional village pub, and home-grown produce right next door.

Our charming self-catering cottage sits discretely in the pretty village of Carlton-on-Trent. Inside, this Grade II listed, 250 year old cottage oozes elegance with original red brick floors and a quirky staircase designed to wrap around a 200 year old stick oven. Much effort has been put into retaining the traditional feel of the cottage, with subtle shades of faded green and blue adding a serene and warming touch to the interiors.

Bedrooms and Bathroom

With two double bedrooms and a pretty third dormitory style room all on the first floor, Dower House Cottage is equally perfect for families as it is for couples looking for a romantic break away. Exposed beams and sophisticated shades of Farrow and Ball provide the backdrop for the romantic first bedroom with gingham curtains, delightfully uneven floors and luxurious linens. The second bedroom boasts a pretty corbeille bed, fireplace and stunning views through a huge weeping willow across to the village church. The pretty third bedroom includes four single beds, a collection of novels for book lovers and stunning views across to the church. Along the corridor sits the large stylish family bathroom with traditional claw foot bath and fireplace together with a separate fully tiled shower room.

Sitting Room, Kitchen & Dining Room

The Sitting Room has sofas to seat six, a wood burning stove (primary heating in the room), writing desk and coffee table. The Kitchen is equipped with washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, range cooker, coffee machine and more. The Dining Room seats six and looks out onto the private courtyard.

Dower House Cottage has central heating in all the rooms, except the Sitting Room which instead has a wood burning stove as the primary heat source. The heating is set to come on automatically when the temperature in the cottage drops below 18 degrees. Should you like the temperature to be set to higher than 18 degrees, please let us know.

With a small gated terrace and table seating for 6, enjoy the private courtyard in the day or evening.

Alternatively don your swimsuit, grab your towel and walk a mere 800 yards to The Beck; a tributary to the River Trent and popular local swimming spot for village children and their families. We also have access to fishing rights for the River Trent along the banks adjacent to the Cottage and can arrange permissions for fishing with ease.

Enjoy a day perusing Newark-on-Trent with its higgledy-piggledy cottages and olde-worlde charm; this iconic market town is teeming with quaint tearooms, boutiques and antique shops together with historic Newark Castle and the stunning St Mary Magdalene Church. Or visit the pretty town of Southwell with attractions including the Minster, the Workhouse and the Archbishops Palace.

For Relaxation

Dower House Cottage is set within a beautiful Conservation area so bring walking boots and a camera to ensure you don't miss a moment of the glorious ever-changing landscape in all seasons. The cottage is perfectly positioned for all that Nottinghamshire has to offer; some of the nation's finest houses and gardens, rolling countryside, cozy traditional pubs, and charming towns and villages are all within easy reach. On a winter’s day hunker down in the Sitting Room in front of the wood burning stove with a steaming mug of cocoa for the perfect relaxing break.

Dower House Cottage has only one staircase and it wraps around the 200-year-old stick oven. The stair case is original with splayed, steep(ish) steps and two rope hand rails (one each side). While it is very charming and easy to scale for most - it can be a challenge for small children and anyone unsteady on their feet. Please keep this in mind should you choose to book Dower House Cottage for your holiday.

Guests have access to the Dower House Cottage, together with off road and on road parking and a private terrace accessed through the back door of the Cottage.

Charlie and Archie are our two Tonkinese cats. They tend to amble around the garden and welcome guests with genuine warmth. If you are allergic to cats then this may not be the holiday home you are looking for.

The Dower House cottage is a lovely place to stay. Local shop and places to eat are a few minutes drive away. The cottage has been decorated well and certainly in keeping with its 250 years of age. Melanie had stocked the fridge with bacon and sausages for us and a bottle of Gin and Tonic was in the fridge! Fresh flowers were in the dining room, living room and bathroom! The kitchen has plenty of crockery and pans plus a dishwasher and washing machine. The entrance to the property is very narrow but once you master the technique it's easy to get in and out of. Overall a lovely old cottage with plenty of character and an excellent host.

We loved this place! It's charming and romantic and suited us perfectly. Melanie provided some wonderful little extra touches that made it extra special. We loved the location - just a few miles outside of Newark. The decoration was beautifully themed throughout and the kitchen well equipped - we're planning next years trip already. Just two word of caution - Its full of old country house charm which means: 1. access to the upstairs is through an old narrow staircase - if you have limited mobility you may need to use the rope handrails. 2. The entrance gates need to be approached from a wide angle - it took me a couple of goes to get it right.

Five stars all the way! Dower House Cottage is an absolute gem: Comfortable, spacious, well equipped and beautifully designed and styled. I rated it "better than expected" and my expectations were high even though the photographs really don't do it justice. Melanie and David are wonderful hosts – incredibly generous with recommendations and keen to make sure we had everything we needed but without being at all intrusive. I don't hesitate in recommending Dower House Cottage and I feel sure I'll be back there again soon.

Prepare to be thrilled!! Dower House Cottage is a unique blend of charm, stunning design and quirkiness in a beautiful setting in Carlton village. We fell in love almost straight away as we arrived for our New Year stay. You enter through the large ornate iron gates and the cottage is nestled next to the main house, with views across to the church and fields. The cottage is next to the main house and you have complete privacy with wonderful views from every window. The cottage is very tastefully finished to an impeccably high standard and each room has its own character and style, respecting its history. It is a lovely, old place with an amazing brick floor, a French wood burner and an incredible, original stick oven, which is a real feature. The hosts, Melanie and David have thoughtfully furnished every room and there is very much a home from home feel. Melanie and David could not have been more welcoming, friendly, approachable, attentive and thoughtful. They were always on hand to respond to any queries, going above and beyond what you might expect but were in no way intrusive. If you are looking for a country escape, you could not find a better spot. The location is great too because you are very much in the country, with an immediate sense of relaxation but the lovely market town of Newark is less than 15 minutes away by car and the stunning Cathedral city of Lincoln is a 40 minute drive. You are also close to Sherwood Forest, Rufford Park and many other local countryside spots, which are beautiful and great for country walks. Come prepared for a country stay though. We had logs for the fire on our arrival, which was a kind thought but you’ll need to stock up and we got through a standard bag of logs each day we were there, so worth keeping that in mind when you shop for your stay. This a real gem, run by great people and we are sure you would love it. We’ll be back!! Kieran, Sally and Rachel
