Our charming self-catering cottage sits discretely in the pretty village of Carlton-on-Trent. Inside, this Grade II listed, 250 year old cottage oozes elegance with original red brick floors and a quirky staircase designed to wrap around a 200 year old stick oven. Much effort has been put into retaining the traditional feel of the cottage, with subtle shades of faded green and blue adding a serene and warming touch to the interiors.
Bedrooms and Bathroom
With two double bedrooms and a pretty third dormitory style room all on the first floor, Dower House Cottage is equally perfect for families as it is for couples looking for a romantic break away. Exposed beams and sophisticated shades of Farrow and Ball provide the backdrop for the romantic first bedroom with gingham curtains, delightfully uneven floors and luxurious linens. The second bedroom boasts a pretty corbeille bed, fireplace and stunning views through a huge weeping willow across to the village church. The pretty third bedroom includes four single beds, a collection of novels for book lovers and stunning views across to the church. Along the corridor sits the large stylish family bathroom with traditional claw foot bath and fireplace together with a separate fully tiled shower room.
Sitting Room, Kitchen & Dining Room
The Sitting Room has sofas to seat six, a wood burning stove (primary heating in the room), writing desk and coffee table. The Kitchen is equipped with washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, range cooker, coffee machine and more. The Dining Room seats six and looks out onto the private courtyard.
Dower House Cottage has central heating in all the rooms, except the Sitting Room which instead has a wood burning stove as the primary heat source. The heating is set to come on automatically when the temperature in the cottage drops below 18 degrees. Should you like the temperature to be set to higher than 18 degrees, please let us know.
With a small gated terrace and table seating for 6, enjoy the private courtyard in the day or evening.
Alternatively don your swimsuit, grab your towel and walk a mere 800 yards to The Beck; a tributary to the River Trent and popular local swimming spot for village children and their families. We also have access to fishing rights for the River Trent along the banks adjacent to the Cottage and can arrange permissions for fishing with ease.
Enjoy a day perusing Newark-on-Trent with its higgledy-piggledy cottages and olde-worlde charm; this iconic market town is teeming with quaint tearooms, boutiques and antique shops together with historic Newark Castle and the stunning St Mary Magdalene Church. Or visit the pretty town of Southwell with attractions including the Minster, the Workhouse and the Archbishops Palace.
Dower House Cottage is set within a beautiful Conservation area so bring walking boots and a camera to ensure you don't miss a moment of the glorious ever-changing landscape in all seasons. The cottage is perfectly positioned for all that Nottinghamshire has to offer; some of the nation's finest houses and gardens, rolling countryside, cozy traditional pubs, and charming towns and villages are all within easy reach. On a winter’s day hunker down in the Sitting Room in front of the wood burning stove with a steaming mug of cocoa for the perfect relaxing break.
Dower House Cottage has only one staircase and it wraps around the 200-year-old stick oven. The stair case is original with splayed, steep(ish) steps and two rope hand rails (one each side). While it is very charming and easy to scale for most - it can be a challenge for small children and anyone unsteady on their feet. Please keep this in mind should you choose to book Dower House Cottage for your holiday.
Guests have access to the Dower House Cottage, together with off road and on road parking and a private terrace accessed through the back door of the Cottage.
Charlie and Archie are our two Tonkinese cats. They tend to amble around the garden and welcome guests with genuine warmth. If you are allergic to cats then this may not be the holiday home you are looking for.
Please treat Dower House Cottage with care - it is an old listed building that has survived 250 years and we want it to keep going! Please be respectful of the cottage's quirks, clean up after yourself (don't forget the dishwasher) and take care with the antique furniture and artworks.
Please communicate your arrival and departure times, and any changes. We want to be sure we are here and ready to greet you! Please don't arrive early without prior agreed notice.
Do not smoke anywhere in the house. If you smoke outside, pick-up your trash.
Please recycle your rubbish. The cottage has two bins outside; one for recycling and one for non-recycling, together with a clear plastic crate for bottles. Please separate your rubbish between the two bins accordingly. By taking your rubbish outside you will keep your kitchen area clean and pleasant.
