East Meets West is the culmination of the proprietors 30 years in Asia. Julie & Michael have melded their amazing art & furnishings into a west coast setting in a wonderful cottage on a 4 acre property outside of Sooke. The cottage sits like a sanctuary amid towering British Columbia firs & undulating fields & pastures. It comprises 3 bed rms, an elegant yet cozy living room/dining rm, 2 decks, a fantastic kitchen, 2 bathrms, & an expanse of lawns & pastures.
Imagine a west coast cottage surrounded by majestic British Columbia fir trees, hundreds of feet tall, which stand like the spires of an open-air cathedral, under a crystal blue sky nestled in four acres of rolling pastures for you to wander through at your leisure. The renovated cottage is set in from the road, at the end of a white-fenced driveway with overhanging cherry trees. A beautiful barn sits on the property and is available as additional sleeping quarters for guests in the summer. It can also be booked as a venue for small gatherings and celebrations, and retreats.
To everything there is a season & the seasons are reflected year round on the property. Currently we are moving toward fall but the days are still warm and the skies are crystal clear. September and October are wonderful months to come when the children have gone back to school and the tourist season is winding down.
We are very well located, just 10 minutes west of Sooke not far from West Coast Road with its easy access to Vancouver Island's most spectacular beaches.
The cottage comprises an elegant yet cozy living room/dining room, an inviting & spacious modern kitchen & three well-appointed bedrooms, one ensuite, the other two with a shared bathroom.
Please note that if you prefer to book an individual room, there are 3 other listings you can go to, for the separate rooms in the Cottage.

The entire cottage, which you are currently browsing, is $300 per night & accommodates 6 plus 1 (a single pull-out). The ensuite Forest Room is listed under its own listing, currently at $135 and accommodates 2. The Elephant and Sunset rooms, are also under their own respective listings at $115 per room & accommodate 2 per room (one has a king sized bed, the other twins which can be converted to a King plus the pullout).
Room A, an ensuite king-sized room also called The Forest Room has its own private entrance & deck. An oil on canvas - 'Girl in a Kimono,' & an altar table from Zheijang Province reflect Eastern elements of East Meets West while a parson's table made on Vancouver Island & end tables reflect the Western elements. Views are of enormous cedars, the pastures & the barn.
Room B, The Elephant Room, is a king-sized room highlighted with Asian linens, & white wicker & palms reminiscent of Somerset Maughan's time in Bangkok. A very pretty uniform cabinet circa 1890 is part of the furnishings as well as two interesting oil pastels from Japan.
Room C, which is also known as The Sunset Room has its own listing as well. It is a colorful twin/king accented with bright lotus flower cushions, an Elmwood kitchen tansu from Korea, a sculpture from Myanmar & a painting by a west coast artist entitled 'Sunset,'hence the name.
The Cottage, is the entire main floor just described (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, the kitchen, living room/dining room and the front and back decks with a good barbecue. It is ideal for family gatherings or a get together with friends and/or colleagues. The ambience is elegant, cozy, comfortable and private as our living space is completely removed from guests in our own garden suite.
Note: We have recently set up overflow sleeping quarters in our barn which are available for anyone booking The Cottage. Please open airbnb.ca/rooms/19828641 for details and booking.
Cable television is available in the kitchen and although we do have wifi we don't have cell coverage which may be a blessing in disguise for those who want a brief respite from the tech world we live in!
We have two dogs - Sami, a very gentle retriever who braved 18 hours in cargo to get here when we moved back to Canada and Molly, a little ball of white fluff. We are very dog friendly and the property is a perfect place for dogs to roam and explore.
Guests are free to enjoy the easy elegance of the living room where they can read, sit in front of the stone fireplace & absorb the aesthetic beauty of Eastern cultures or listen to music selected from Michael's 300+ CD collection. Peace and tranquillity, lively conversation & laughter are constants here.
Off the living room is a spacious deck with a barbecue overlooking an expansive lawn bordered with BC firs. We provide full, nutritious breakfasts with items such as Asian inspired smoothies (mango with mint, pineapple, kiwi or papaya), fresh fruit in season, delicious frittattas, omelettes, pancakes, sausages, bacon, & 'just out of the oven' muffins, croissants & breads. Coffee & a good selection of teas are also offered. Breakfast can be served inside or out on the deck, whichever you prefer. Julie and Michael are happy to prepare dinners for you on request and the food & ambience are second to none. Alternately, you are free to use the newly renovated kitchen to cook full course meals & in between browse through the small but eclectic library housed in a 1890's armoire from Myanmar. If you wish to dine out, we will happily recommend local eateries & call ahead for reservations.
On the front and side lawns, it's Croquet or Bocce in the spring, summer and fall.
As previously mentioned, a beautiful barn, formerly used to board horses, is available as a small celebration & event venue & of course to visiting guests who simply want to take in the wonderful smells of the cedar beams that support it, or secure their kayaks and bikes.
After running an 'Oasis in Bangkok', we came to understand how much our guests enjoyed interacting with us during their stay. We have brought the same style of hosting to Otter Point and go far beyond answering questions about highway directions or the new round-a-bout in Sooke to lively discussions that enable us to get to know you, and you us. By inviting you into our home to experience the same comfort we do, we feel we are offering something truly unique.
Each of our three bedrooms and the Cottage have their own Airbnb listing and price as outlined above. Please select your preference for a particular room or rooms. Again, you are currently browsing 'The Cottage' listing. If you wish to book this room, simply go to the calendar to check availability and proceed with your booking.
If your choice of room is unavailable (i.e. we are ‘full’ for that room), we encourage you to check the other rooms by going to their individual links.

My husband Michael and I have recently returned to our native Canada after living in Asia for 28 years and have re-branded 'An Oasis in Bangkok' as 'East Meets West.' We feel that 'East Meets West' captures the melding of Asian furnishings and art collected over many years into a west coast setting..... an elegant renovated cottage surrounded by tranquil pastures
We are confident that we can offer something truly unique and invite you into our home to share 'our Asia' with you as well as countless stories of lives well led. If you have not travelled to Asia, this may just give you the incentive to start planning a trip and we would be very happy to share the 'best of the best' of Japan, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok, cities we have lived and worked in and have come to know the people, the cultures, the cuisine, the languages and other 'ins and outs.'
Our style of hosting is to welcome you into our home to share and experience the comfort we do and to do our utmost to ensure you feel relaxed, happy and are provided with the creature comforts and all the information you need. When you leave, we are also confident that it will be after a restorative stay with a genuine desire to come back again soon.
Sawasdee Kha for now......
