East Meets West is the culmination of the proprietors 30 years in Asia. Julie & Michael have melded their amazing art & furnishings into a west coast setting in a wonderful cottage on a 4 acre property outside of Sooke. The cottage sits like a sanctuary amid towering British Columbia firs & undulating fields & pastures. It comprises 3 bed rms, an elegant yet cozy living room/dining rm, 2 decks, a fantastic kitchen, 2 bathrms, & an expanse of lawns & pastures.

Imagine a west coast cottage surrounded by majestic British Columbia fir trees, hundreds of feet tall, which stand like the spires of an open-air cathedral, under a crystal blue sky nestled in four acres of rolling pastures for you to wander through at your leisure. The renovated cottage is set in from the road, at the end of a white-fenced driveway with overhanging cherry trees. A beautiful barn sits on the property and is available as additional sleeping quarters for guests in the summer. It can also be booked as a venue for small gatherings and celebrations, and retreats.

To everything there is a season & the seasons are reflected year round on the property. Currently we are moving toward fall but the days are still warm and the skies are crystal clear. September and October are wonderful months to come when the children have gone back to school and the tourist season is winding down.

We are very well located, just 10 minutes west of Sooke not far from West Coast Road with its easy access to Vancouver Island's most spectacular beaches.

The cottage comprises an elegant yet cozy living room/dining room, an inviting & spacious modern kitchen & three well-appointed bedrooms, one ensuite, the other two with a shared bathroom.

Please note that if you prefer to book an individual room, there are 3 other listings you can go to, for the separate rooms in the Cottage.

Links for our listings are:

The Cottage: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/7418737
Room A : https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/7239227
Room B : https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/7346289
Room C : http://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/7242521

The entire cottage, which you are currently browsing, is $300 per night & accommodates 6 plus 1 (a single pull-out). The ensuite Forest Room is listed under its own listing, currently at $135 and accommodates 2. The Elephant and Sunset rooms, are also under their own respective listings at $115 per room & accommodate 2 per room (one has a king sized bed, the other twins which can be converted to a King plus the pullout).

Room Descriptions:

Room A, an ensuite king-sized room also called The Forest Room has its own private entrance & deck. An oil on canvas - 'Girl in a Kimono,' & an altar table from Zheijang Province reflect Eastern elements of East Meets West while a parson's table made on Vancouver Island & end tables reflect the Western elements. Views are of enormous cedars, the pastures & the barn.

Room B, The Elephant Room, is a king-sized room highlighted with Asian linens, & white wicker & palms reminiscent of Somerset Maughan's time in Bangkok. A very pretty uniform cabinet circa 1890 is part of the furnishings as well as two interesting oil pastels from Japan.

Room C, which is also known as The Sunset Room has its own listing as well. It is a colorful twin/king accented with bright lotus flower cushions, an Elmwood kitchen tansu from Korea, a sculpture from Myanmar & a painting by a west coast artist entitled 'Sunset,'hence the name.

The Cottage, is the entire main floor just described (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, the kitchen, living room/dining room and the front and back decks with a good barbecue. It is ideal for family gatherings or a get together with friends and/or colleagues. The ambience is elegant, cozy, comfortable and private as our living space is completely removed from guests in our own garden suite.

Note: We have recently set up overflow sleeping quarters in our barn which are available for anyone booking The Cottage. Please open airbnb.ca/rooms/19828641 for details and booking.

Cable television is available in the kitchen and although we do have wifi we don't have cell coverage which may be a blessing in disguise for those who want a brief respite from the tech world we live in!

We have two dogs - Sami, a very gentle retriever who braved 18 hours in cargo to get here when we moved back to Canada and Molly, a little ball of white fluff. We are very dog friendly and the property is a perfect place for dogs to roam and explore.

Guests are free to enjoy the easy elegance of the living room where they can read, sit in front of the stone fireplace & absorb the aesthetic beauty of Eastern cultures or listen to music selected from Michael's 300+ CD collection. Peace and tranquillity, lively conversation & laughter are constants here.

Off the living room is a spacious deck with a barbecue overlooking an expansive lawn bordered with BC firs. We provide full, nutritious breakfasts with items such as Asian inspired smoothies (mango with mint, pineapple, kiwi or papaya), fresh fruit in season, delicious frittattas, omelettes, pancakes, sausages, bacon, & 'just out of the oven' muffins, croissants & breads. Coffee & a good selection of teas are also offered. Breakfast can be served inside or out on the deck, whichever you prefer. Julie and Michael are happy to prepare dinners for you on request and the food & ambience are second to none. Alternately, you are free to use the newly renovated kitchen to cook full course meals & in between browse through the small but eclectic library housed in a 1890's armoire from Myanmar. If you wish to dine out, we will happily recommend local eateries & call ahead for reservations.

On the front and side lawns, it's Croquet or Bocce in the spring, summer and fall.

As previously mentioned, a beautiful barn, formerly used to board horses, is available as a small celebration & event venue & of course to visiting guests who simply want to take in the wonderful smells of the cedar beams that support it, or secure their kayaks and bikes.

After running an 'Oasis in Bangkok', we came to understand how much our guests enjoyed interacting with us during their stay. We have brought the same style of hosting to Otter Point and go far beyond answering questions about highway directions or the new round-a-bout in Sooke to lively discussions that enable us to get to know you, and you us. By inviting you into our home to experience the same comfort we do, we feel we are offering something truly unique.

Each of our three bedrooms and the Cottage have their own Airbnb listing and price as outlined above. Please select your preference for a particular room or rooms. Again, you are currently browsing 'The Cottage' listing. If you wish to book this room, simply go to the calendar to check availability and proceed with your booking.

If your choice of room is unavailable (i.e. we are ‘full’ for that room), we encourage you to check the other rooms by going to their individual links.

Julie and Michael is not only providing a place to stay, they are providing some sort of home coming atmosphere and some sort of lifestyle as for our own well being. We seem to be friends the first email exchanged and we simply love talking and staying with them the first day we arrived. They are so considerate and so warm hearted. They made my summer camp students so well received and loved their yard as well as the bedroom in the barn! Everything worked out perfectly and smoothly. We will try to come back next summer and hopefully we would be luck enough to get the rooms! Love your guys, Julie, and Sammy and Holly.

To those Sooke visitors looking for something special: Giovanna and I truly enjoyed our stay with Julie and Michael, as did Jeffrey, Todd and Angela. It was more akin to staying with family members than what one might expect from a BnB. You successfully struck the perfect balance between providing wonderful service and hospitality while respecting the privacy of your guests. The breakfasts were exceptional, the house and bedrooms were meticulously clean and comfortable and the property serene and peaceful. And...Sam and Molly added an extra special touch. You made this a much more enjoyable and memorable weekend than you might know. I sincerely hope we meet again. Ian and Giovanna

Dear Ian and Giovanna, Thank you so much for your kind words. We too sincerely hope we meet again and Michael and I felt exactly the same way - as though you were family. We would love to see you again - anytime! We wish you a very happy summer. The weather feels settled as though God is in his Heaven and all's right with the world! Am sure it's the same in North Delta. Take care and we'll see you 'next' time - wherever! All good things, Julie, Michael, Sami and Molly

Julie & Michael were wonderful hosts. They went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and a very freindly couple. Good facilities at the cottage. Sumptuous breakfast. Not only gave detailed guidance for sight-seeing & eating places but also booked restaurants for us. We would not hesitate to recommend anyone to stay at East Meets West. Located in a quiet peaceful environment with beautiful surrounding. Our stay was enjoyable. Would like to visit again. Maharukh & Nevill

This place is all about the experience. It's not on the water but it's a little slice of heaven. The environment is so loving and attentive you really feel at home. You feel like visiting your favourite aunt and uncle and you have your own space. Great energy. Great area and such a delight. Will come back and highly recommend to others. Julie, Michael and Sam are truly gracious hosts who are authentically happy that you are visiting. That changes everything.

Thank you, Julie & Michael (and Sami!) for such a lovely stay at your beautiful home in Sooke. Julie is wonderfully detail oriented and attentive. She provided me with a wealth of information about directions, things to do and see, and places to see in the email communication we exchanged in the weeks leading up to our trip. The home is even more beautiful than the pictures in the listing let on. Julie and Michael's collection of art and furniture is displayed just so - making every corner of the home tell a story of their journeys through Asia. Julie and Michael are fabulous hosts who take great pleasure in getting to know their guests. We really enjoyed getting to know them, too. The breakfast provided by Julie and Michael was 5 stars all the way. From the coffee, to the homemade pastries, to the smoothies and fruit parfaits, to the luxurious eggs... we felt absolutely spoiled rotten! J & M certainly have a keen eye for detail and do everything they can to make their guests feel special. Thank you again, Julie and Michael. We look forward to returning to visit - and we will happily recommend that all family and friends (and people reading this review) come stay with you in Sooke. They are certainly in for a treat.

Such an unforgettable experience! I went with my friends and one of them told me he wished to drop all the courses and stay there FOREVER after we left. Spacious rooms, fast WI-FI, enough privacy, good drinks, fine music, and yummy breakfasts…Everything is as described in the listing. Beyond that, as I recall, Julie said “your wishes are my command”, which really touched me. It is fair to say that Julie and Michael tried their best to make us feel like home, which they did, and they were also very helpful with the recommendations regarding the attractions and restaurants in Sooke. Besides, what I loved the most was the fresh air in the morning and the stars in the sky during the night: a true place for a getaway from cities. The only thing that we think needs to be improved might be the temperature of the two main bedrooms since during the night it could be quite cold. In a nutshell, however, we really enjoyed staying with Julie and Michael. Say hi to Sami for us please! Hope he does not miss us that much.

คำตอบจาก Julie:
Thank you so much for your visit and your feedback. Zifan. We loved having you and are very grateful for your nice comments. We really appreciate the input on the temperature of the bedrooms. We are thinking we needed to put the furnace up higher on nights that are as cold the nights you were here. We tend to set it at a constant temperature and this may have been the problem. At any rate, we are having someone come and check both the furnace and the bedroom heaters this week to ensure they are circulating the air and doing what they should be doing. Again, xie xie.

My husband Michael and I have recently returned to our native Canada after living in Asia for 28 years and have re-branded 'An Oasis in Bangkok' as 'East Meets West.' We feel that 'East Meets West' captures the melding of Asian furnishings and art collected over many years into a west coast setting..... an elegant renovated cottage surrounded by tranquil pastures

We are confident that we can offer something truly unique and invite you into our home to share 'our Asia' with you as well as countless stories of lives well led. If you have not travelled to Asia, this may just give you the incentive to start planning a trip and we would be very happy to share the 'best of the best' of Japan, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok, cities we have lived and worked in and have come to know the people, the cultures, the cuisine, the languages and other 'ins and outs.'

Our style of hosting is to welcome you into our home to share and experience the comfort we do and to do our utmost to ensure you feel relaxed, happy and are provided with the creature comforts and all the information you need. When you leave, we are also confident that it will be after a restorative stay with a genuine desire to come back again soon.

Sawasdee Kha for now......
Julie and Michael
