East Meets West is the culmination of the proprietors 30 years in Asia. Julie and Michael have melded their amazing art & furnishings into a west coast setting in a wonderful cottage on a 4 acre property outside of Sooke. The cottage sits like a sanctuary amid towering British Columbia firs & undulating fields & pastures. It consists of 3 bed rms, an elegant yet cozy living rm/dining rm, 2 decks, a state of the art kitchen, 2 bathrms, & an expanse of lawns & pastures.
Imagine a west coast cottage surrounded by majestic British Columbia firs that stand like the spires of cathedral nestled in four acres of pasture to wander through at your leisure. The property & surrounding area reflect the incredible beauty of seasonal changes on Vancouver Island with blossoms taking the lead in early March, followed by cherry, magnolia, apple and pear blooming in sequence. And so it goes - for everything there is a season. Imagine relaxing in these surroundings where you can be soothed by the summer sun & refreshed by the cool breezes of the Straits of Juan de Fuca, where you can walk through forests or along beaches or eschewing more active pursuits, stay home & relax in front of the fireplace reading a book you've been longing to read without interruption. Breakfasts are included & range from juice to Asian smoothies or fruit parfaits to start, followed by eggs parmesan, scrambled or poached, frittatas, french toast, pancakes, & crepes with bacon, croissants, toast, muffins or scones, coffee & a good selection of tea. Our entrance is a long driveway flaunted with cherry blossoms in the spring, bordered with white fences, leading to the cottage. A handsome barn can be used as overflow sleeping quarters for anyone booking either the entire cottage or any of our other rooms. You are currently on East Meets West, a fusion B and B, Room B.

This listing, Room B is also called The Elephant Room. It is blue and white with wicker, reminiscent of Somerset Maughan's time in Bangkok. It has a king size bed and houses a 19th century Uniform Cabinet from Korea.
Room A, The Forest Room is an en suite with its own private entrance & deck. An oil on canvas - 'Girl in a Kimono,' & an altar table from Zheijang Province reflect Eastern elements of East Meets West while a parson's table made on Vancouver Island reflects West. Views are of enormous cedars, pastures & the barn. The bed is also king size.
Room C is aptly named because of an oil on canvas bearing the same name. It has twin beds and a pullout and a wonderful standing monk with a very calm expression on his face. It houses an Elmwood Kitchen piece from Korea circa 1890.
The Cottage: The Cottage can be booked in its entirety and is a perfect venue for a family gathering or holiday, a celebration, a getaway with friends or work colleagues, or a retreat. Basically the whole shebang is yours - 3 bedrooms, bathrooms, living rm/dining rm, decks and property. People love it!
Guests are free to enjoy the easy elegance of the living room where they can read, sit in front of the cozy stone fireplace & absorb the aesthetic beauty of Eastern cultures or listen to music selected from a 300+ CD collection. Peace and tranquillity, and lively conversation & laughter are constants here. Off the living room is a very spacious deck overlooking an expansive lawn. Full, nutritious breakfasts are provided either inside or out and include items such as Asian inspired smoothies (mango with mint, pineapple, kiwi or papaya), fresh fruit in season, eggs to the liking from our neighbour down the hill, delicious frittattas, omelets, pancakes, bacon, French toast & 'just out of the oven' muffins, scones, croissants and breads. Coffee & a good selection of teas are also offered. Julie & Michael will prepare dinners on request & the food & ambience are second to none. Alternately you can cook full course meals and in between browse through the small but eclectic library housed in a 1890's armoire from Myanmar! After breakfast it's croquet or Bocce on the side lawn! If you wish to dine out we will recommend & or make reservations for you at local eateries. In addition to providing overflow sleeping quarters, our barn can be booked for small gatherings, retreats & other events (inquire for details). It is of course available to guests who simply want to take in the wonderful scent of the strong cedar beams that support it or secure their kayaks and bikes.
After running an 'Oasis in Bangkok', we came to understand how much our guests enjoyed interacting with us during their stay. We have brought this same style of hosting to Otter Point and go far beyond answering questions about highway directions or the new round-a-bout in Sooke (which of course we will gladly do) to animated discussions that enable us to get to know you& you us and to look forward to a return visit! By inviting you to share and experience the same comfort we do in our home, we feel that we are offering something truly unique.
To reiterate, in addition to this listing, (B,'The Elephant Room'), each of our other bedrooms, (A) 'The Forest Room' and (C) 'The Sunset Room' plus 'The Cottage' have their own listings. If your choice of room is unavailable (i.e. we are ‘full’ for that room), we encourage you to check the other rooms by going to their respective links which you will find above in The Description of The Space.
Thank you so much for your enquiry & we really look forward to meeting you.
Julie, Michael, Sami and Molly!

My husband Michael and I have recently returned to our native Canada after living in Asia for 28 years and have re-branded 'An Oasis in Bangkok' as 'East Meets West.' We feel that 'East Meets West' captures the melding of Asian furnishings and art collected over many years into a west coast setting..... an elegant renovated cottage surrounded by tranquil pastures
We are confident that we can offer something truly unique and invite you into our home to share 'our Asia' with you as well as countless stories of lives well led. If you have not travelled to Asia, this may just give you the incentive to start planning a trip and we would be very happy to share the 'best of the best' of Japan, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok, cities we have lived and worked in and have come to know the people, the cultures, the cuisine, the languages and other 'ins and outs.'
Our style of hosting is to welcome you into our home to share and experience the comfort we do and to do our utmost to ensure you feel relaxed, happy and are provided with the creature comforts and all the information you need. When you leave, we are also confident that it will be after a restorative stay with a genuine desire to come back again soon.
Sawasdee Kha for now......
Julie and Michael
