Secluded, open space studio with full kitchen, seperate living room and bedroom spaces, vaulted wood ceilings with exposed beams, cozy lighting, wrap-around large lanai, coordinated color theme, garden views, paved roads, centrally located for visiting Volcanoes Nat'l Park, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Pahoa, Kalapana and Kapoho. Located in a peaceful, rural neighborhood and only about 1.5 miles to the lava cliff coast line.
The ohana (guest house) is located at the back of our one acre property and is not visible from the road. There are two other structures between the ohana and our main house, giving you complete privacy, plus the bedroom and living room areas are facing away from the main house and are surrounded by garden views, so you really do feel like you have your own little hideaway. There is a solar light pathway from the parking space to the ohana for nighttime arrivals, as well as a motion sensor security light.
Our unit can accommodate 4 adults and a baby, but baby must sleep with the adults.
You are welcome to use our washer and dryer. They are located in the carport storage area - the unlocked double doors to the left. last load going in at 11:00pm. We provide laundry soap, bleach and dryer sheets.
Currently, I am not working and can be available to help you at any time with anything you may need - just call or text me or knock on the back door. We are a family of 3 and are fairly quiet and private and will respect your privacy as well.
As is common here on the Hilo side of the island, our neighbors have dogs and roosters that you will hear. The roosters may crow at any time during the night, their favorite times being around 12:30am and 4:30am. You would probably have to stay right in Hilo town if you don't want to hear them and most of the other nature sounds, but even then it's not a sure thing because chickens and roosters run loose all over the islands. I even hear them inside the back room at the Hilo airport post office! There are also some coqui frogs and crickets singing at night. I love them, personally, but some don't. The two oscillating fans can be used as white noise to help cover the nighttime sounds.
There is no A/C (also common in the islands) and the unit can get warm inside during the heat of the day, which is between noon and 6 o'clock. Opening the doors and windows is usually enough to make it comfortable again, but if not, we also provide two standing oscillating fans. Most people will be out enjoying the island during this time anyway! The lanai offers cool breezes almost all of the time and there is a hammock and patio furniture for you to relax on and enjoy.
You may have heard that Hilo gets a lot of rain. This is true, but most times it comes as quick little passing showers. The heavier rains usually come at night and pass within an hour or so. Winter time is our rainy season.
Lastly, our location is 3 miles into Hawaiian Paradise Park off of Hwy 130. This sounds like a lot of driving - and it is by mainland standards - but this is the BIG Island and if you want to see it there is no getting out of long drives no matter where you stay. If you are only coming to see the volcano, then it is best for you to stay in the town of Volcano. If you only want to see Hilo, then you should stay in Hilo. The Puna district that we are located in is as big as the island of Maui, and almost all of it is 2-lane rural roads with very few stop lights. Our location is actually central to most places you'd want to see in this district and in Hilo and north Hilo areas.
House rules are the same as you'd expect from your guests; no loud partying or loud music at any time, keep the TV volume reasonable, and keep the kitchen tidy. Wash dishes as soon as possible after use and keep the counters and floor clean in order to keep flying insects and ants away.
Please do not leave lights on or fans running while you are out for the day.
Please - no smoking of anything at any time, anywhere. The smoke can and does travel inside the unit even if you are on the lanai and the humidity helps the odors to stay there.
Since I do not require a security deposit, your voluntary offer to pay for any damages you may cause would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know as soon as possible of any damages that I need to remedy before the next guest arrives.
Washer and dryer use between 7:00am and 11:00pm. (Last load can go in at 11:00pm)
Check in after 4:00pm, check-out by 11:00am.
Guests must be at least 21 years old.
Note that the unit sleeps 4 plus one baby if sleeping with parents.
We are Karla and Joel Nava. I'm 51, Joel is 46. Our son, Lakota is 17.
We are very easy going and quiet kind of people; not much rattles us. We are avid lovers of Hawaii and finally realized our dream of moving here in May and June 2015 (I came over early to set up the vacation rental).
Joel is a computer geek - he can help you if you have any issues. I love to cook all kinds of foods, and our son is a die hard computer gamer. You probably won't see him unless I ask him to do some yard work.
We enjoy road trips and sightseeing in scenic places. Before Hawaii, we lived in Texas for 7 years, Alaska for 3 years and Florida for 8 years. You can say we are extreme, weather-wise!
I have created the vacation rental to be as comfortable and relaxing as possible and I want you to feel like you are at home. Feel free to let me know if anything is missing or unsatisfactory in any way and I'll do my best to fix it on the spot.
