One of our two overwater bungalows (see Sea Monkey Overwater Bungalow 2) at the edge of Old Bank town on Isla Bastimentos with a collapsible 12x8 foot front wall, 180 degree ocean views from the bed and giant over water deck with over water hammock. The bungalow features a king size bed and twin daybed with luxury linens, a spacious hot water shower, handmade local toiletries, and a mini-fridge. Gourmet breakfast at our restaurant next door is included.

ที่พัก
The bungalow is 20' by 22' with giant sliding doors that collapse to create a 12' wide opening to the sea. There are unobstructed views from all doors and windows of the sea, neighboring islands, and the village of Old Bank.

The sleeping area features an ultra-comfy king size mattress, luxury linens from the US, a romantic mosquito net, industrial ceiling fan, and soft lights connected to a dimmer. There is also an additional twin daybed for use as seating or for an additional guest.

The deck is 20' by 8' and features an overwater hammock, deck chairs, and lights for nighttime use.

A spacious hot water shower sits at the center of the open-plan bathroom with counters and fixtures made from local hardwoods and driftwood. We also provide toiletries from Punta Coco Soaps, a local producer of all-natural soaps and lotions made with coconut oil from Bocas del Toro.

การเข้าถึงของผู้เข้าพัก
Guests will have access to meals at our restaurant next door during restaurant hours and can use the space to do work or use wifi any time.

We also have a private dock for flagging down water taxis to any destination in the islands.

สิ่งอื่นที่ควรรู้
Thanks for booking one of our bungalows at the Sea Monkey! There are a few things we want to go over to ensure that you have a good time:

Transfers: As soon as you make your travel plans, please let us know so we know when to expect your arrival. To get to us from Bocas Town, make your way to the Bastimentos dock on Main Street. From there, it's 7 minutes by water taxi, which is $3 per person ($5 at night).

Banking: Our bungalows are located at the edge of the village of Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos. Old Bank is the second largest town in the archipelago behind Bocas Town, but it's still pretty small. We do have three mini-markets and several restaurants and bars, but there is no ATM on the island. As such, we recommend you either bring enough for your time on the island with you, stop in Bocas Town to use the ATM there, or plan to visit Bocas Town during your stay so you will have access to the ATM. Should you run low on cash, we can usually ask the owners of local businesses to extend you credit until you can visit the ATM.

Electricity, water, and WiFi: Panama is a developing country, and Isla Bastimentos is one of the more remote areas in the country. We have WiFi and municipal water and electricity, but they are all known to go out from time to time. If the power does go out, it will come back on shortly. The satellite WiFi service is usually speedy enough for guests to check email and sometimes watch Netflix, but we do request that you avoid big downloads so that everyone can use the network to stay in touch. We store water to ensure that our guests have plenty of water for showers and have yet to run out, but we do ask that you do your best to conserve water. If we do run out, there is little we can do other than wait for rain to come to refill our tanks, so we will keep you apprised of the water levels and of just how conservative you need to be in your water use during dry periods.

Temperature and critters: Given that we are 9 degrees above the equator in a tropical rain forest, you can expect the weather to be warm and to see a bit of rain here and there. It is very rare for it to rain all day long. Rain usually comes in bursts at night or early in the morning. It helps cool things off and provides us with our water. The temperature at night is cool enough that we don't need air conditioning. Each room has an industrial ceiling fan that we find keeps things plenty cool, allowing you to hear the jungle sounds and the rippling of the water instead of the hum of an air conditioner. Being that we are on a jungle island, there are bugs. We purposely built the bungalows far out over the water so that most of them can't make the journey. The fans usually take care of any that do make it. Just in case, we have mosquito nets in each bungalow both for peace of mind and because they are fun. When you are out exploring, long pants and/or bug repellent should keep you comfortable.

Trash and recycling: Being a developing country, Panama isn't at the forefront of refuse processing. We do have weekly trash pickup and do our best to ensure that cans, plastics, and glass get recycled, but we also emphasize creating less trash all around. We ask that you keep your purchases of plastic bottles to a minimum as they are the hardest to recycle and tend to make up the bulk of our trash problem in Bocas. We provide a gallon of drinking water in each bungalow, and we can refill your vessels with filtered water free of charge.

Old Bank: We chose to build the Sea Monkey on the edge of the local village of Old Bank on purpose because our most memorable travel experiences usually occurred when we chose to stay in local villages or neighborhoods rather than in touristy areas. That being said, it's not for everyone. You will definitely hear our neighbors' chickens crowing, and possibly a bit of music coming from the over water bars at the opposite end of town on weekends. You will also have the opportunity to meet plenty of locals if you would like to. If you usually prefer large resorts with 24-hour staff, however, it may not be the right fit. We are a very small operation, which we find most people prefer.

Staff: We have five local employees who will make your breakfast each morning and clean your room daily. If you need anything (new towels, more soap or toilet paper, or anything else at all), feel free to either inform one of them or us. We are also usually on site and are always available via phone/email/text to help arrange activities or provide recommendations.

We apologize for making you read that introductory essay. We want to ensure that we can fulfill our guests' expectations.

Bastimento Bocas del Toro ปานามา

Old Bank is a local, Caribbean village. It's the real deal. It's far less touristy than Bocas Town and provides guests with the chance to mingle with local residents rather than only other travelers (though there are plenty of opportunities for that, as well).

There are multiple restaurants and bars out over the water, and beautiful views from just about everywhere.

You will definitely hear our neighbors' chickens crowing and may hear faint hints of Caribbean music coming from the overwater bar at the other end of town. We think it makes for a relaxing, fun atmosphere that really feels like you're in the Caribbean.

The Sea Monkey is located at the residential east end of Old Bank just a short walk from bars, restaurants, and markets. It feels secluded but also affords the opportunity to be connected to the town. You can fish from your room, swim out to a local snorkeling spot, or hike up into the jungle directly from our property, while also having direct access to Old Bank.

Just outside of the village, Isla Bastimentos is a wild wonderland. A short hike takes you up into the jungle from town, where you can stop for lunch and the views at Coco Hill vegetarian restaurant or a snack and coffee at Up In the Hill Chocolate Farm before heading down the back side of the island to Wizard Beach, a secluded beach that rivals any in the world. By boat, you can reach the world famous Red Frog Beach for $5 per person in about 10 minutes, where beach bars, surfing, and swimming await. From there, it's possible to hike to Polo Beach, a beautiful, secluded beach overseen by a colorful local resident whom the beach is named after. Polo Beach has excellent snorkeling.

Further down the island, those up for an adventure can take tours to the Nivida Bat Caves or to visit the Ngobe-Bugle village of Salt Creek, or to the Cayos Zapatillas within the Bastimentos National Park. The Zapatillas are unspoiled and uninhabited (other than two park rangers who protect them) and feature beautiful beaches and snorkeling, as well as fun, short hikes around their perimeter and interior. Day trips to the Zapatillas usually include a stop at Cayo Coral, where you can stop for a snorkel and a sea food lunch at one of the over water restaurants in the area.

Beyond Isla Bastimentos, guests can take a short kayak to Isla Solarte to snorkel at Hospital Point, or a boat or kayak ride to the Blue Coconut, in one of the most picturesque locations in Bocas. The Blue Coconut has a restaurant and bar and loans out snorkels and stand-up paddle boards to guests who wish to explore their house reef. On Isla Colon, you can rent bicycles to ride all the way to Bluff Beach, stopping for a beer or something to eat on the way, or to Bocas Del Drago and Starfish Beach, where the beach is strung with seafood shacks in the sand. Public transportation is also available to both places.

No matter what your interests (as long as they include the sea!), Bastimentos and Bocas Del Toro won't disappoint.

I'm from the US but have been living in Bocas del Toro, Panama since 2014. We have two overwater bungalows for guests at The Sea Monkey as well as three budget rooms. We live in the village of Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos, a place often referred to as "the real Bocas." When I'm not in Bastimentos, you'll meet our general manager, Keith. He's awesome with guests and has all the info you'll need on local activities!
