Guillermo was a great host for my short one night stay in Valparaiso. The apartment is located within a very short distance of the shoreline to walk along the water, which was incredibly convenient for new years to watch the fireworks. Additionally Guillermo took me and boyfriend for a tour around the city to show us a few sites as well as went to a delicious lunch with us in the market. He definitely took his time to ensure we enjoyed our stay in Valparaiso.
Before we arrived, Guillermo was friendly on email, and when I enquired about soccer opportunities for our kids, he took the initiative, made some calls, and made it possible for them to go to soccer camp twice a week. We appreciated that. When we arrived, we felt the place was not as described in his emails to us. The apartment overlooks a busy street (made worse due to jackhammer construction the first week). We did like that it is a short walk to the beach and to the metro, although the walk is on busy streets, not pedestrian-friendly. We had been told that the place was quiet and kid-friendly, and did not find that to be true. Also on the property, is another small house which is actually 2 studio apartments. Guillermo lives in one and rents out the other, or rents out both and sleeps in a tiny room that was part of our house but with a separate entrance. There was a lot of changeover with new renters, even late at night. He also had a neglected dog. Our apartment had very small rooms, drawers and cabinets that don't close, and very little kitchen equipment. Within a week, Guillermo had spread many of his things all over the common area (including the table with awning seen in picture right, seen by our dining table) - which was not cleaned up during the rest of our stay. As I wrote above, we appreciated that Guillermo helped to set up soccer. He also wanted to drive us to and from the practice, but this became uncomfortable, as he would not tell us how much he was charging until we really pressed him to let us know (we respected his time but also wanted to budget). It took him even two more days after that for him to get back to us about it even though he had planned on it for weeks). It was expensive for us and we later figured out the bus. He was ambiguous with other matters as well, (including involving a phone). We recognized on the day of our arrival that this one month planned stay was not a good fit for our family and let him know. Guillermo encouraged us to stay a few days and try it out, and spontaneously reassured us he would pay us some money back if we left early (it was the month of December, and especially the second half of December is very popular there.) We told him we would leave early within 2 days. As the situation felt worse, we left even earlier, and let him know the final date ahead of time. We left on December 13th instead of the 31st. We stayed that long since we did not expect to get money back, even though he said he would give us money back multiple times (not required by AIrBnb for a 30 day stay). We did not receive any money.
