Well... the only positive thing about the apartment was its location. Everything else had gone quite wrong for us.
We were going to be staying for 2 nights.
After Jules' friend gave us the keys and left, we realized the apartment had not been cleaned at all. The trash was still there, the sheets and towels weren't changed, the toilet was dirty, etc.
Also, we couldn't reach Jules or his girlfriend. We called, left voicemails, and sent text messages to all phone numbers that we were provided (and indicated all communications as urgent), and it took several hours to receive a reply... in French (and we barely speak any French), telling us that they are busy at work and unable to help us until at least later that night. Jules himself finally responded later, from France... and even then it took us awhile to get him to actually call us so we could discuss the situation.
We spent half the day trying to figure out backup plans, looking for other AirBnb apartments, hotels, and other options. All of which was made more difficult by the fact that the Internet in the apartment did not work at all (even though it was supposed to), and free wi-fi in the city was extremely slow if at all available. We did decide to stay at Jules' apartment in the end because his girlfriend promised to stop by later in the night with clean sheets (she came around midnight).
We cleaned the toilet and shower ourselves, and we thankfully had our own towels.
Well, on top of all that, the smoke detector kept beeping, and it would have been impossible to sleep through it. We spent half an hour trying to remove it from the 3-meter high ceilings (my husband stacked two night stands on top of each other and was then barely able to reach it).
Check-in / Check-out: Jules was very communicative, however, when first telling us he needs to push back the check-in time "so the cleaning lady would have enough time to prepare the apartment" (really?). He was also very communicative a few hours before our check-out when requesting that we arrange to meet his new cleaning lady and give her the only keys to the apartment (which we did).
And... the bed wasn't quite meant for 2 people. Our standard-size pillows didn't even fit next to each other on the mattress.
