The sports and leisure facilities within Palmela Village centre around the 18 hole golf course, designed by Jorge Santana da Silva. It is an ideal course for beginners which fits snugly into the natural surroundings and is a real joy to play. The clubhouse boasts a beautiful restaurant, bar and changing facilities, with golf buggies for hire. There is also a communal swimming pool with sun terraces and Snack Bar, serving drinks and snacks (open in the summer months only). There are 8 golf courses within a 30 minute drive of Palmela Village and a further 12 within one hour, making the area an ideal choice for golf enthusiasts. The superb championship courses at Aroeira can be reached within 30 minutes of the villa and the more well known courses of Estoril and Sintra are only a further short hop across the famous April 25th Bridge, which also takes you into the stunning city of Lisbon.
The beauty of the Costa Azul region is that it is not just about golf and has so much more to offer. Miles of unspoiled sandy beaches are very close by and there is a wealth of traditional Portuguese towns and villages ready to welcome visitors to experience their history and culture - as well as their excellent wine! Lisbon is only a forty minute drive away and has everything you might expect of a capital city - excellent restaurants, museums, theatres, shops, hustle and bustle in the day and a lively nightlife - no trip to the region would be complete without a visit. Another “must see” is the beautiful city of Sintra with its stunning royal palaces, fabulous parks, museums and breathtaking views. Closer to home, there is an abundance of beautiful and quite differing beaches on offer, where you can enjoy surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, body boarding or the more leisurely pursuits of sun bathing, paddling, hiring a pedalo or simply people watching!
Although less well known the area boasts many culinary delights with the emphasis based on locally produced fresh ingredients. ‘Black pig’, (porco preto) is a local speciality as are the many local cheeses (our favourite is Quejo de Azeitáo), olives, chorizo, wines and of course fish. There are a great number of very traditional and very inexpensive local restaurants as well as more sophisticated ones a little further afield.
The people of this region are extremely friendly and welcoming and the area has a very traditional feel. They still celebrate many local customs and each town or village has its own festival at least once every year. This is normally to celebrate a particular historical event or a saint’s day and there are still a couple of local towns where you can see bull running in the streets – whatever the occasion it always involves lots of food and dancing!
