I loved this place. The whole atmosphere was chill and relaxing, and I almost cried when it was time to leave. That being said, part of the reason it is so chill is because it's a very basic place, there is breakfast but it is simple, there are showers but you pay extra for them, and not everything (lights, internet) is available and speedy exactly when you want it. I think that it is a fantastic deal for the price, with plenty of restaurants and of course the sea right nearby, but think of it as a place to totally chill out rather than a home base for hardcore tourism.
The staff and ownership at Ostello were truly wonderful. Welcoming, accommodating, and so kind—they were probably the best thing about my stay here. Some negatives to note though is that office hours may be a bit spotty and very very very specific. It's a pretty small town and so the buses stop running at 3:30pm, which makes getting around pretty difficult unless you have a bike or are renting a car. A 15 minute ride to the train station costs five euros if Ostello takes you (as opposed to 22 euros if you call a local cab). That sort of adds up. It'd be better if Ostello Apuano had a more organized bike rental system so that people can explore the nearby town. I'm sure they do have some sort of a system but it's not well advertised and the limited service hours proved to be a hindrance. The town has a beautiful view of the mountains that rival many sights in Italy that I've seen. The grounds are quiet and peaceful, and the bathrooms are clean. If you are international and don't have the ability to call the office without incurring major charges, I'd recommend setting everything up very early and communicating very clearly/verifying with the office to make sure that rides from the train station are soundly arranged. Again, the family that owns the hostel are such nice people and they were so accommodating even when I missed a train (which can be easy to do in the small town parts, plus trains can be few and far in between) and they had to drive back to get me. I'd recommend them depending on your individual needs.
Perfect little escape! Removed from everything but right along a bus line that often runs into town. Tucked in between the mountains and ocean with free beaches and quaint restaurants. It was quiet and I even got a room to myself as there was no one else staying in the room that night. Nice patio overlooking the ocean, staff were super friendly and so were the other guests. Great place!
