Il Castagno estate is a great place for a family holiday. The location is excellent - one hour by car from Pisa airport, 15 minutes from San Gimignano and 1h15 from Firenze. We stayed in Cipresso, a semidetached house just off the main driveway to the estate. It is a traditional Tuscan-style, well-kept villa. Even though we stayed in mid-August, it was cool inside (but keep the shutters closed during the day when you are out, so it stays cool). Fans were provided but not needed, because of the elevation of the estate. There were very few mosquitoes around the estate (repellant alone was enough) and the main windows all have netting.
The kitchen had everything we needed. There was a Moka pot and a stove-top kettle, plus a dishwasher and a fridge-freezer. All provisions need to be bought from local supermarkets (Gambassi or Montaione).
The bedrooms were spacious, with comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms with good, powerful showers. Each person gets a bath towel, small towel and hand towel, plus a few toiletries. Large pool towels are available for 5 euros each for the stay.
Cipresso has its own garden with a large table, a drying rack for clothes and a BBQ (charcoal and lighters are available from local supermarkets). The lawn has sprinklers, so do not leave things out to dry at night. A steam iron and ironing board can be borrowed for free from reception, and there are two washing machines next to reception (small fee for using these). The reception also sells coffee pods (there is a Lavazza Blue espresso machine in the kitchen), bottles of water, oil and local wine. Wifi is free & worked well (including pool-side).
The shared pool is large, clean and fixed-depth; there's an attached shallow pool for younger children. There are sun loungers around the pool. The estate itself is very nice, well-kept and secure. There are deer within a fenced section of the estate. The surrounding countryside is beautiful.
We tried three local restaurants: Ristorante Boscotondo; le Tre Case; Ristorante Il Castagno. The first two are a short drive (or a long walk); Boscotondo had better food and service. Il Castagno is opposite the main gate to the estate and has just reopened under new management. They are still finding their feet after opening, so service is rather slow, but its okay for light meals, average pizzas, sandwiches and coffee. The best restaurants are in San Gimignano.
A highlight of the stay was the excellent and friendly service from Paola and Teresa. Check-in/out was easy and they are very knowledgable. Teresa made reservations for us at some very good restaurants in San Gimignano and she ensured we had a good table with a view for my sister's Birthday.
Overall, this was a great choice for a family holiday, and I think we were lucky to get Cipresso at short notice during peak season. I would certainly recommend Il Castagno to others.
