Here is a review from a person-

“Here's what going to happen: you're going to hike five miles into the middle of nowhere. It will be a challenging hike -- about 2.5 or 3 hours of trudging through bushes and marshes and climbing up hills. The cabin itself sits atop a river/pond with an adorable pair of beaver neighbors. It has everything you need, including coffee and snacks and sleeping bags. On the second day, you'll do more hiking/exploring. The views will take your breath away. And you'll want to stay forever. Everything about this place is amazing. Mike (and his dog Asher) are wonderful hosts/guides. The views are unbeatable. I spent 10 days in Alaska and this was the highlight of my trip. I would recommend to anyone visiting Anchorage, Denali, or Fairbanks. My only regret was going to Denali after the cabin instead of the reverse, because I ended up being very disappointed by the views in the park. ”

You can fly round trip from Talkeetna (flight price separate) or walk 5 miles on our rustic trail through the brush and lakes to the cabin. The walk in is spectacular in scenery and worth the trip. The lake has canoes and fishing is available.
This is available June-Oct only.

Wonderfully secluded. Fun times. Kayaking in the lake. Quality hiking. Wood burning stove and rain on the roof made for my deepest sleep in months.

When planning our trip to Alaska with another couple (celebrating our 10 year anniversary and their 15 year) we came across Mike's listing. While my husband and I both love being active and spending time outdoors, we initially thought this would be too "extreme" for our trip. After reading through the reviews, I knew we had to do it. Mike was an active communicator, quickly answering all of our questions leading up to the trip. We met as planned near Talkeetna for the drive north on a beautiful warm sunny day. Mike is a FAST hiker, and the hike to the cabin was challenging (we are mid 30s and work out regularly but these trails are rugged). For me, my rain boots ended up being a size too big and had painful heal blisters to prove it, but I switched back to my hikers and just walked through the marshy water. The cabin itself was clean and simple, with basic snacks and fresh water from the stream, sleeping bags and pillows. We LOVED listening to Mike's stories (he is quite the adventurer) and his son in law joined us as well for the trip. We had unusually hot weather (close to 80 degrees and sunny) and hiked 12ish miles the second day, to high country. Sadly we didn't see any animals aside from the beavers and otters in the lake by the cabin. We loved our time away from the tourists and into the woods. The landscape was seriously incredible, Mike has taken years to create paths that are still almost hidden in all the thick brush. It is remote and comforts are minimal (but still easier than setting up a tent!) Practical tips: Mike does have a solar panel and was able to charge our phones (to be used as cameras). We did not get cell service (on verizon) but our friends did with AT&T. Make sure your rainboots fit! I would have packed way fewer things and just re-worn my clothes day to day, as I didn't get to shower anyways (although the men did take a "shower" in the lake!) A "must" for anyone wanting to avoid the tourist crowds and like being physically active.

This is not a traditional AirBnB. You hike many miles over backcountry "trails" to reach the cabin. The cabin is off the grid. Your host is your guide. He accompanies you on the trip (with his dog and gun) and stays in his cabin next door. If you are physically fit and looking for a great outdoors experience, I highly recommend it. The isolation and connection with Alaska's natural beauty cannot be matched on the groomed trails of Denali.

My husband and I had a great time out in the wilderness with Mike. Wished we could have stayed longer. It was an invigorating and humbling experience -- we couldn't have been farther from Chicago both mentally and physically-- that only deepened my already intense respect for the land and for animals but additionally, for the people who live and make Alaska their home. The ability to unplug and just sit and absorb the beauty and quiet at the cabin was balanced with Mike's passion to hike and show us the vastness and more beauty that surrounds his little corner of the world. Weather conditions limited our activity a little but we can't miss what we couldn't see and everything we did see was spectacular, including the moose and the industrious beaver. Mike is an exceptional guide (with an emphasis on safety), good cook, and all-around interesting and positive man who likes to share his ideas but never gets preachy. But listen to him when he says to bring rubber boots! In the days following the trip, I kept finding myself thinking, "I should have asked Mike about [fill in the blank]." As for logistics, the cabin has everything you need and more: Warm sleeping bags, comfy pillows, snacks, fresh/delicious/cold spring water (boy, was I glad not to have to pump/filter or use purification tablets), and good coffee! Definitely recommend it to anyone who is in decent physical shape and wants to get off the beaten path and have a unique Alaska experience.

Mike is a very special person and spending time with him is a privilege indeed. His cabin, tho as spartan as you read in the descriptions, is incredibly warm and cozy and has all that you need to be comfy. There is water from the lake in a large tank, and you can warm that up on the stove to wash. MIke is a very good cook and will prepare simple, tasty and nutricious meals. The hike there and back is not for everybody. You need to be prepared to cross marshes, a rickety tibetan bridge over a rushing river, climb up and down very steep slopes, get wet and muddy, and be on look out for wild life. But the reward is definitely worth it! Once you reach your destination the beauty of it will take your breath away and you will feel at peace with the universe! Thanks again Mike for all you did for us and thanks to your adorable dog for keeping us safe!!

Mike's accommodation is a secluded dry cabin that's about a 5 mile hike from the main road. We drove about an hour North from Talkeetna and parked the car in a pullout on the main road before starting the hike. On the 2nd day, we canoed across a lake and hiked about 10 miles round trip. Amazing views and one of the best experiences we've ever had. Mike is a no nonsense kinda person and we had some very interesting conversations. He also prepared yummy food for us, which we did not expect in such a remote setting. The most important thing is to follow Mike's instructions on trip preparation and that was it. This is definitely a true Alaskan experience, and it was the best part of our vacation.

Love the outdoors and adventure. We lived in Nepal for 4 years and love Asia . My son and I completed a project of climbing the highest mountain in each of our 50 states.

I lead a group to Nepal each year for trekking and stop in Thailand for the rest after Nepal.
