HISTORY:

In a wonderfully unique city full of wonderful unique houses, 436 Olancha is one particularly unique and wonderful property, bold in personality and rich in lore.

This stunning mid-century modern compound was originally constructed in 1948 supposedly for the head of a major Hollywood studio as a getaway from his other Palm Springs getaway; legend has it that he maintained a “proper” estate in Old Las Palmas - a grand ornate home with sprawling grounds, swimming pools and staff to attend to his family - yet craved a simple, special, architecturally modern place all of his own. Thus, unbeknownst to his wife and children, he purchased a large plot of land in the south end of town and secretly commissioned the construction of 436 Olancha, one of the earlier examples of mid-century modern architecture in the area. At the time, it was also one of the only homes in the neighborhood (other Hollywood luminaries would follow his lead - Max Factor built his Palm Springs compound, currently owned by Grammy nominee Sia Furler, around the corner in the late 50’s). He fell in love with the spectacular setting, the unique wraparound mountain views and the incredible sense of privacy. Specific instructions were given to the architect - the property was to be completely walled and contain two structures; a main house to serve as his private refuge (a “man cave” of the era), a place where he could read film scripts, imbibe a cocktail too many, and sleep in late, and a secondary house on the property, divided into two separate residences, one for each of his two mistresses. Evidently, one woman was an early bird, so she resided in the east residence (the “Sunrise Suite”) while her counterpart was a creature of the night and thus occupied the west residence (the “Sunset Suite”); in homage to this history, the owners continue to use these names.


According to the many rumors still in circulation, good times were enjoyed by many at 436 Olancha during this time. Alas, at some point in the following years, the wife discovered the existence of 436 Olancha (and the two mistresses!), and her husband decided to close this chapter of his life. In 1955, the land was subdivided and the property sold.


Sadly, the end of this chapter marked the beginning of a far less glamorous era for 436 Olancha; from 1955 through 2013, the property suffered at the hands of numerous near disastrous remodels and nearly 60 years of neglect. When the current owners first viewed the property in 2013, this diamond was so rough that it more resembled a lump of coal than the original gem it once had been. However, amongst the clutter and mayhem, most of the original details still somehow survived and the majesty of the San Jacinto mountain range continued to inspire the same humbling awe as it had in 1948. Emblazoned by the history of what 436 Olancha once had been, the current owners undertook a 1.5 year “down to the studs” restoration of the property, upgrading all systems to the modern era while maintaining and paying tribute to its architectural origins. From the light fixtures and furnishings to the artwork and patio furniture, the property has been extensively decorated with exquisite vintage pieces from the owners’ private collection in harmony with its original design.

They invite you to indulge in the renaissance of this special mid-century modern home as it embarks on a new chapter in its storied life. Take a nap amongst the swaying palms, enjoy a shower beneath the stars, and perhaps (responsibly) imbibe one cocktail too many at the outdoor bar … you won’t be the first to do so.

Overview: 5 real bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, indoor/outdoor bar and lounge, gourmet kitchen, 2 kitchenettes, salt water pool with in-ground spa, 2 private patios each with its own outdoor shower and one with an outdoor fireplace, fountain, off-street parking for 4, propane BBQ.

Details:

Main House:

*One bedroom with queen bed and private en-suite bathroom (shower). The bathroom has a Toto toilet, Duravit dual sink and Grohe fixtures and vintage mosaic tile.

*Gourmet kitchen with a Viking Range, Miele dishwasher, stainless steel GE Monogram refrigerator, hand poured white concrete countertops and Heath tile backsplash (Note - Heath was founded in 1948, the same year of construction as 436 Olancha !). The kitchen is appointed with a variety of tools and appliances as well as dishes and cutlery.

*The kitchen opens up to an outdoor dining area for 10

*Living room with 48” LED television and double-sided fireplace (the other end opens to the bar and lounge) (note - the fireplace is currently used for decorative purposes only). The television has access to Apple TV and Netflix.

*Indoor/outdoor bar and lounge: the outside bar has seating for 5, the indoor bar has seating for 4, and the lounge area has additional seating for 4. The bar is fully appointed with the owners’ collection of vintage barware.

*There is an additional half bath off of the bar and lounge with a Toto toilet, Duravit sink, Grohe fixtures and vintage mosaic tile.

*The main house has modern 3 ton central AC and heating system.

Sunrise Suite

*There are two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the other with a king bed. Each bedroom has floor to ceiling glass sliding doors which open directly to the pool area.

*The king bedroom additionally has a kitchenette (with refrigerator, sink, coffee maker, Heath tile backsplash and basic kitchen appointments), a seating area, a dining room table, and direct access to its own private patio which contains a private outdoor shower, seating for 3, a vintage outdoor fireplace.

*The two bedrooms share a full bathroom (shower over tub) with a Porcher toilet, Duravit sink, chrome fixtures and walls of vintage mosaic tile.

*Each bedroom has its own new ductless mini-split AC/heater unit which can be adjusted individually for the comfort of each occupant.

Sunset Suite

*There are two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds. Each bedroom has floor to ceiling glass sliding doors which open directly to the courtyard and/or fountain.

*The twins bedroom additionally has a kitchenette (with refrigerator, sink, coffee maker, Heath tile backsplash and basic kitchen appointments), a seating area, an office area, and direct access to its own private patio which contains a private outdoor shower and an exterior dining area for 4.

*The two bedrooms share a full bathroom (shower over tub) with a Toto toilet, Duravit sink, chrome fixtures and walls of vintage mosaic tile.

*Each bedroom has its own new ductless mini-split AC/heater unit which can be adjusted individually for the comfort of each occupant.

The Grounds

*The entire property is walled and gated for your security and privacy.

*Spectacular mountain views are visible from nearly every vantage point.

*Saltwater pool with spa. The pool was completely renovated in 2015. The pool is heated with solar panels (complimentary with the room fees) but can be heated additionally with a gas heater for an additional fee. The pool contains benches in the spa, the deep end and the shallow end so that guests have a wide variety of sun, water temperature and view options.

*All decking around the pool is pebble tec

*Outdoor/indoor bar (see description above) as well as a communal outdoor dining area for 10 as well as another outdoor dining area for 4.

*8 Lounge chairs around the pool

*A spacious courtyard between the structures - ideal setup area for parties/caterers

*A gorgeous fountain on the north side of the property which greets visitors upon entering the main gate and can be heard throughout the property. It provides additional seating in the shade during the hot summer months.

*All stainless steel BBQ

*There are THREE wifi networks blanketing the entire property with high speed internet.

Furnishings

*All of the mattresses and linens are new throughout the entire property

*Nearly all furniture, light fixtures and art is vintage to the era of the home. They include pieces from the likes of George Nelson, Herman Miller, Hans Wegner, Steelcase, Walter Lamb, Brown Jordan, Modernica, Arthur Umanoff and Artemide, just to name a few, as well as custom one-of-a-kind works from the 1950’s and 60’s which have been collected from some of Palm Spring’s most famous estates and hotels. The owners also have an extensive collection of vintage barware on display, as well as vintage Heller plates for poolside use.

2017 RATES (*PALM SPRINGS TAXES NOT INCLUDED IN RATES BELOW*. Airbnb has not rolled out the functionality to automatically add taxes yet in Palm Springs, so each booking will need to be manually calculated by host. A full quote will be sent to each Guest prior to booking):

High Season (January 1 - May 31, October 1 - December 31):

Non holiday - $850/night.
Holiday - $900/night - $2000/night (see calendar).
3 night minimum over weekends; certain holiday weekends may require longer stays.

Low Season (June 1 - September 30):

Non holiday - $725/night
Holiday - $900/night
2 night minimum; certain holiday weekends may require longer stays.

Cleaning Fee: $300

Pool heat fee: Spa only ($25/day), Pool only ($75/day). NOTE - the heat from our solar panels is complimentary and should provide sufficient heat for the pool April through October for most people.

Utility Fee: $30/day from June 1 - September 30 to cover the additional air conditioning related costs; note - if the weather is unseasonably cool this amount may be refunded at the end of your stay.

We are registered with the City of Palm Springs. All guests will be required to sign a supplemental document as required by the City of Palm Springs. This document will additionally contain the full list of House Rules.

This is NOT a party house. The City of Palm Springs does not permit outdoors music and the city wide noise ordinance kicks in at 10pm. We have wonderful neighbors and we require all guests to respect them.

Sorry - no interior smoking and no pets/animals.

We strictly limit the number of guests to 10 (both day guests and overnight). All people, regardless of age, count as a guest. Any variance in this limitation must require the prior written consent of owner.

Pictures and description are accurate. It’s an amazing space in a great, quiet location. The entire property is impeccably clean. Aaron was extremely responsive and flexible. He provided a few recommendations that were spot on. Great host. I hope the property is available for our next Palm Springs trip.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this house. The owners are so amazing. They were extremely accommodating and helped us every step of the way! We had a small event at the house and it was absolutely beautiful. It was everything I dreamed the event to be. The house looks even better than pictured with all of the improvements to the yard area. The house is fully stocked with everything you need and it is so fun! There is so much space, you can go with a big group and still feel like you have privacy. This house is amazing and I cannot recommend it enough!

What can I say other than that this home was everything I wanted and more for my girls getaway weekend. This home is not only perfectly located, but is stunning. The exterior is beautifully decorated and designed and is a perfect backdrop to the pool where you will most likely spend your time being how hot it is! The interior is something out of a magazine and has clearly been curated to perfection. Aaron is extremely quick to respond whether through text or email and was such a wonderful host. I couldn't have asked for a better trip, and all of my friends agreed. Don't hesitate in booking this beautiful home!

Where do I start?! This place has so much character, starting from the front door. The house and grounds are impeccable. They have thought of everything! This place sleeps 10- when we arrived, there were 10 perfectly rolled up pool towels, 10 seats at the table, and even 10 gorgeous pool loungers! How accommodating! The furniture is gorgeous, unique, and perfectly Palm Springs. The minimalism is ideal for relaxation. Even the dishes were interesting! The owners have great taste. Great artwork too. The house is separated into 3 compounds, which I was worried would separate our group too much but it didn't at all. There are plenty of common spaces and the separation gives everyone privacy and keeps it relaxing and quiet. Best place I have ever stayed on Airbnb. Aaron was so sweet and easy to communicate with. Do not hesitate on booking this place!
