Relax with jaw-dropping views from this unique, sophisticated, and very comfortable home nestled on a secluded cul-de-sac in the hills directly above UC Berkeley. Walkable to UC campus & retail/restaurant districts, yet surrounded by nature.
This home is a beautiful example of Bay Area Mid-Century modern design, which we've renovated over the past decade.
The views from the home and street are expansive, romantic, and relaxing.
The layout of the home takes advantage of Bay Area indoor-outdoor living, with double wide sliding doors that open to the front deck, and a backyard patio area accessed from the dining room featuring synthetic grass that stays warm and dry regardless of the weather.
The stylish home has many luxury upgrades including radiant heat, high-end "chef's kitchen" appliances, wine fridge, Weber outdoor gas grill, outdoor lounge furniture with an outdoor gas heater, several paintings and prints by Bay Area artists, and a 60" television screen with surround sound in the downstairs den/movie room.
While the cool Bay breeze is generally all that's needed to keep the home comfortable in summer, the downstairs den, which is partially subterranean, is a great escape if there's ever a heat wave, as it stays as cool as a cave despite its sweeping views of the Bay. This room, which is equipped with a 60" television screen with surround sound system, and a queen size convertible futon sofa, is accessed separately from the rest of the house, through a door in the carport. If you're less interested in movies or staring at the Bay from the large windows in this room, but need to study or work, there's also a workstation outfitted with a printer ready for you to connect.
If you're visiting when we're experiencing cool, foggy nights, then just turn on the radiant in-floor heat, or cozy up underneath the heat lamp on the front deck, or curl up on the sofa in front of the oversized fireplace in the living room.
We rent out this home, our primary residence, when we're traveling. However, we will ensure that you have local assistance with any issues that we can't remotely troubleshoot for you.
Special aspects of the house:
amazing front deck with luxury furniture
oversized Weber grill on back patio
radiant heat throughout the house
oversized wood burning fireplace
gas powered heat lamp on the front deck
2 kids bikes and 2 adult mountain bikes (1 women's ~5' 4" and 1 men's ~6') are available
This is our primary home and we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do! We're very neat and detail oriented, and will ensure every aspect of the house is ready for your stay. In return, we expect guests to be conscientious and treat our furniture and appliances with care.
No pets or smoking allowed.
We installed a wonderful radiant heating system to maintain the most-allergen free environment possible (no forced air to blow dust around).
While kids are certainly welcome (ours live here all the time!), this home may not be safe for toddlers due to stairs and sharp edges on some furniture.
Feel free to have a celebration on the deck or patio, but please be considerate of the neighbors by keeping the noise down after 10pm.
Together with my wife, who is a licensed architect, I've renovated this wonderful Mid-Century home over the past decade. She and I appreciate architecture that is functional, clean, exciting, inspiring--and above all comfortable.
I met my wife while working abroad on sailboats. Together, we led many sailing trips in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas in our pre-professional lives.
Since becoming more land-bound, we have 2 children, ages 9 and 7. We all love exploring our 1/4 acre backyard (a pretty big usable lot for the Berkeley Hills!), or riding bikes on our quiet street (a dead-end/cul-de-sac with minimal traffic) while taking in the sweeping views of the Bay... and dreaming of when we might get back on a sailboat together again.
