Kalaafaanu Retreat has the best grilled reef fish, you should try it when you're there! Ali is extremely helpful when giving me information about how to go to Hangnaamedhoo with public ferry; he's very responsive. The staffs picked us up from the ferry terminal and helped us with the luggage. We rented snorkel equipment and had a blast snorkelling at the bikini beach (which is a short walking distance from the guesthouse). The island is full of mosquitos; we appreciate the staffs that they always burn the incense to repel mosquitos when we dined (we recommend future guests to bring mosquito repellant). The cooking for lunch/dinner takes 1 to 1.5 hours so we always order our food in advance. The only thing we weren't comfortable with was the presence of rubbish at certain areas of the guesthouse. If you're looking for quiet island life with clear ocean water, Hangnaamedhoo is the place to be. But if you're looking for variety and social happenings, you'll find this island to be too boring.

We went to Maldives last 20th - 23rd May 2017. We met up with Ali at the Ferry Terminal in Male. He clearly explained the weather situation and the risk it will take for us to transfer from Male to his resort. He gave us the best option there is and the best part is it was of NO additional cost. We were transferred to his friends' resort which is very close to Male and happens to be on the same island as that of the airport. Ali made all the arrangements for us. He was courteous enough to even brought us to a resto and sort all things out over a cup of coffee/juice. Maldives Trip would have been a nightmare. But thank God, Ali has made it sure it is one of the most memorable trips ever! If given the opportunity to visit Maldives again, we will definitely make it a point to stay at Ali's place. We highly recommend that you guys experience the same hospitality we have received from Ali. Cheers!

Our stay at the Retreat was great! Thanks to Edam who gave his best to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The island and accommodation is nice and quiet. The beautiful bikini beach is just around the corner. There were never more than 15/20 people there at the same time. Every sunset we took to chairs, put them right in front of the water and watched it all alone. The snorkeling is great as well. But please watch out for the corals and don't take any shells like most of the stupid tourists did! We also went diving, on a snorkel safari to a tiny island and on a fishing trip with a following BBQ using our caught fish. All in all, if you are looking for a 5 star tourist resort and island, then you have to go somewhere else. But if you are looking for a quiet, indigenous experience with some adventure possibilities then you won't be disappointed. P.S.: Ali just set up the first Diving School on that island. It looks great and diving at the house reef is awesome! Good luck with everything!

Thanks to Edam for welcoming us! He was a great host, helping us and answering all our questions, bringing us to great places and very flexible. He was a great help to organize our arrival from the airport (speed boat being the best solution time vs budget). Rooms are clean and according to pics. Breakfast is enough to start the day (due to logistic reason, lunch and dinner should be ordered in advance according to availability...). Location is good, 5min from bikini beach (don't forget it's an islamic state) despite too small to welcome all island tourists. But no worry, as soon as you go on excursions, you can enjoy dream beach! Activities are amazing! Snorkeling safari, sand bank and thigidiri (?) are a must: turtles, sharks, nemo, all types of coloured fish, rays... and beach according to posters!! So thanks Edam for our great days, we are leaving with wonderful pics!!

Ali Azim is not only small tourism related business entrepreneur but also a corporate lawyer by profession. After pursuing his LLB he went to the University of Kingston, London to compete his LLM. He has completed his LLM major in commercial law from Kingston University London. He came to the tourism industry during 2003 while he was doing his A’Level is CHSE, Male’. He was obliged to get involved in running his uncles safari boat. His uncle is a well known businessman from Ari Atoll of Maldives. While his uncle was running his buisiness successfully, Mr Ali’s father was actively involved to take care of everything. Ali’s father played a managerial role in his uncles business. Mostly, his uncle was doing dhoani (boat) renting business to resorts. He was holding several boats at the beginning of 19’s. Also during then he was the head Lesser of Ellaidhoo resort and minor shareholder of the resort. Later in 2003 as there was no one to take care of safari boat operation, Mr Ali was obliged to give some of his time in his studies for Safari Boat operation which was targeted for European cruisers coming to Maldives for vacation. While studying in his A’level, during his teen age Ali managed safari operation and made it a great success during his tenure. Ali was also one of the Co-founders of Liveaboard Association formed in developing cruising vacations and safari boat industry in Maldives. Even later, during his LLB, Ali played a vital role in running safari operation business. After completion of his LLB in 2009, Ali was serving to government as a lawyer at different offices. Even at the beginning of local tourism in Maldives, Ali was looking for an opportunity to start local tourism at his native island, Alifu Dhaal Hangnaameedhoo. After several market researches he started a small three room Guest house in his island during 2014 in the name of Kalaafaanu Retreat. He opted that name in the vision to promote cultural tourism of the island and the country. King kalaafaanu was one and only son of national hero of Maldives, Mohamed Thakurufaanu. He was martryed in 1608 nearby hangnaameedhoo during a battle with Malarbar Fleet and buried in Hanganaameedhoo. The Kings shrine is in hangnaameedhoo and it's in the top heritage list of the country. Sultan Kalaafaanu was the king of Maldives for more then 23 years, after the regime of his hero father. Mr Ali was the first one who started local tourism in the island to that extent by opening the island to several renowned online booking platforms for the first time. Within three years of operation he managed to extent the business for 07 room with a diving and water sports Centre in Hangnaameedhoo. His diving and water sports Centre is the first of its kind in a local island of that area certified by PADI. The Centre is open for many water sports activities with 15 people diving capacity. Ali has also recently started cafe service in a well enough standard to cater the growing local tourism in the island. Although, Mr Ali is based in capital city due to his legal profession he oversees and actively involved in day today running of his business. Ali is also making a huge effort in helping his island community while doing local tourism business in the island. As he has been elected to the one and only non-profit association of the island as the president he is making a lot of effort to develop his community in different angles.
