Dar Rbab is a 300 year old house in the heart of the walled medina of Fes. We have four rooms available, hence the other listings under Dar Rbab. This one is named after the Indian silk bedspread.

The room has a double bed and a separate single bed, so will sleep three people. There's a private, en suite bathroom down a short flight of stairs; it's a traditional hammam style, with tadelekt walls - basically a wet room.

We aren't running a maison d'hote or hotel; Dar Rbab is sometimes a family home to myself, my wife Ghizlane (who is Moroccan) and our two young daughters. When we are away, the house is run by S'Mohamed and our housekeeper, Aicha.

The house is in the region of 300 years old, and has all the features associated with historic houses in Fes. The centre of the two storey building is a courtyard, with pillars supporting balconies at the first floor. Access to all the principal rooms is by massive sets of cedarwood double doors, elaborately decorated and gilded on their inner sides.

The ground floor has a comfortable salon, courtyard and fitted kitchen.

Families with children are welcome.

We part own a Moroccan Tourist Transport company and are happy to provide quotes to take you on into the Atlas, the Sahara, the Rif, Marrakech and Essaouira. Rates start at 120 euros per day for an air conditioned 4x4/SUV, fuel, and an English speaking driver/guide.

Our only rule is never to make any rules... but we would prefer it if you didn't smoke in the bedrooms.

Please note that Dar Rbab is a 300 year old building, with steep and winding staircases. A certain degree of physical dexterity is required.

Please do not leave cash or valuables in the rooms.

As the room is air conditioned we'd also ask you to be energy conscious and turn the AC off when you leave the room, and to close the doors and windows when the AC is running. Electricity is hugely expensive in Morocco - and we only have one planet...

Though we did not meet Mark, S'Mohammed and Fatima were both very accessible and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We felt very welcome. We had some much-needed help initially to find the Riad, but then were able to find our way soon after. It was walking distance to many of the shops and sights and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Due to the age of the building, the bathroom drainage was a bit slow but that was somewhat expected. Fez was one of our favorite destinations in Morocco and if we come back we would not hesitate to stay here again.

We enjoyed staying in this 300 yr old house. It's breath taking. Mark's staff is excellent. Mohammad was very helpful and fluent in English. We befriended him and enjoyed his kindness. Fatima can cook! She's very sweet. We had dinner at the house the first night. Super delicious! She's a. Re ally good cook. This place is tucked a way down a little alley. It's definitely harder to find. You should really try it before sundown. I was told that Bab IlGuiza was not all that safe. It made me paranoid but I was not in any danger. Mohammad can arrange dinner outside for you through another restaurant near by. All clean and safe food also. We ate at the terrace of that old house turned into restaurant. Very delicious. We slept one night at the Red Room, which was my favorite, and another at the Indian Room, also very beautiful. Breakfast is included every morning. We ate homemade "Moroccan Crepes" and another morning something similar to homemade polenta , they were super delicious, a boiled egg, coffee...heard it changes depending on the day. Plus they serve everything in adorable tableware from Morocco. Hot water runs great, bathrooms were clean. Be sure to bring your own toiletries.

Room was clean and comfortable, as reviewed and advertised. The AC worked great. The breakfast was simple but delicious, as was the mint tea! S'Mohamed and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful and helped us out on many occasions. Communication was excellent. He sent one of the staff to guide us into the medina from the closest gate and then arranged an official guide. It was actually relatively easy to find our way back to the guesthouse after a trip or two (which for any medina is a big task). Wifi worked for me well but my girlfriend's iPhone had some connectivity issues for some reason. The bathroom was as described, so this may not be a place for clumsy or older people. It is a wetroom and the floor takes some time to dry. The bathroom was also a bit dark (one of the bulbs was out), and one of the steps needed to be fixed. But this was a great budget find. We would be glad to come again.

The Indian Room at Dar Rbab was an absolutely beautiful and comfortable riad to stay at. Deep in the medina of Fez (it was kind of hard to find because GPS doesn't work in the medina, but the manager of riad was in contact with me by phone), it's a great base for exploring the city. The room itself is decorated in the Moroccan style and very spacious, easily sleeping 4 people. The attached bathroom is massive as well, and very clean. The whole riad has great Wi-Fi. Mark wasn't around, but the manager of the house proved to be a great host by serving tea when I arrived and breakfast in the morning.

The room and the riad are both great! We never met Mark, but Mohammed was very nice and helpful. We talked over mint tea when we arrived and set us up with Abdul, who gave us a great tour of the medina. The room was clean and the riad is beautiful.

The Riad was an great experience. It was superbly decorated in the traditional Moroccan style. We had a private bath with all the necessities including hot water. The bath is more like a wet room. It takes a little getting used to. Our hosts made delicious breakfast everyday and did everything possible to make sure we were comfortable. They even helped coordinate an excursion with driver. The room has AC which made our sleep even better. The Riad is located in the medina and was easily accessible from one of the main gates. Overall, it was a perfect place to rest after walking the Fes labyrinth! Definitively recommend it.

We stayed in the room for several nights during the music festival in May. The room is relatively clean, small and dark. The photo is pretty accurate. The bathroom is down some dark steps and is a black hole. The light wasn't working at the top of the stairs so to avoid tripping in the dark we found an extension cord and hooked up a light. Mohammed was pretty helpful and the woman who made the breakfast was nice. The breakfast was adequate and I would not expect more from a budget place. The first night we had dinner prepared and it was delicious and a huge meal for 220dam. The next night we asked for 1/2 the amount of food because we couldn't eat it all and don't like to waste. The couscous was very good but way too much food and another 220. Unless you are a big eater or have friends to invite you may want to go elsewhere for meals. The riad is about 20-25 minutes walk from the festival venues which gives an opportunity to get exercise and see Fes. If you don't like walking so much or get lost easily you might want to stay at a place closer to Batha and the blue gate for the festival. Mark was responsive to all of my emails and questions. Note that smoking is allowed in the riad and when we were there it was raining and the courtyard was covered. The smoke from downstairs wafted up into our room and there is no way to ventilate. In the summer it may not be an issue.
