Did not deliver on customer promise; would not rent from Ali/Hank again. This is my first and, hopefully, last negative Airbnb review.
The good: apartment is in a great location and has a great view. It has a good bed, is spacious and clean.
The bad: absolutely no hospitality from Ali and Hank. They are business partners and the post said they are in the rental and hospitality business. All I got was a rental. Zero hospitality.
(i) The listing was initially at about $350 per night, with a cleaning fee and service fee totaling to $1250. When I requested it, she upped the price to $499/night, plus service fees adding up to $1607. I expressed that that was about the cost of the hotel I was trying to not stay in to save some money, and expressed that I'd book elsewhere/another apartment. She decided to "honor" the listed price. I don't know what the laws are in Philadelphia, but hiking a pice after advertising differently is illegal in Boston. It is so easy to officially update price on Airbnb (after all, she did it quickly after my inquiry) that it seems to be a click and bait approach. (See other reviews citing similar behavior.) They had three other listings which remained open until the last the day I arrived, so it wasn't the only one they had available (preempting an excuse here). Anyway, I paid $(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) of that to them.
(ii) No internet, no iron, no gym access. Hank met me when I arrived (seemed like a decent guy and was flexible). I asked him for the internet password (needed it for wok), an iron (he said it was in the closet) and info on the gym (he gave me a keypass). I first couldn't access the internet and found that the router cable was actually physically disconnected. He tried to blame that on the cleaning lady with his face red (again, see other reviews). I rewired and connected it to the wall (I have a CS background and work for a networking company so can't be lied to here). Turns out the internet was disconnected (unpaid). Not a coincidence. He called the cable company and took care of it.
iii) I went to the gym, pass was blocked. Their guests are blocked from the gym.
iv) There was no iron. He brought one later but it was too late. (He lives 10mins away). They seem to have some expectation that you should keep asking for things when they aren't there. How about just putting basic things like you promised in the apartment in the first place?
v) There was only one roll of toilet paper
vii) There was a coffee pot (no coffee, tea or any such thing whatsoever in the apartment. ) As an airbnb host and many-time guest, the lack of touch was shocking.
viii) There were two towels, no wash cloths. Please don't advertise that you have everything needed. $350 per night! Worst deal.
