Corten Home is an independent holiday home with all mod cons near the historic centre of Ossuccio above the main road, overlooking Lake Como with secure private parking, a small enclosed garden, lake views and wifi.
Enter via a private gate into the open-plan upper floor with the sitting room opening to a timber deck with views across the garden down to the lake. The kitchen provides all mod-cons including a dishwasher and washing machine; and an extending dining table, and entertainment centre with satellite TV and DVD player complete the picture. Also on this floor is the bathroom with glass shower, toilet, bidet and washbasin.
Carefully selected tactile surfaces and finishes throughout the home add interest and character with natural stone, glass, ancient timbers, weathered iron, and marble.
The two bedrooms are located downstairs via a spiral staircase with additional access for luggage via external stairs by the front door. The master bedroom features a queen-size bed, and the spacious adjoining second bedroom offers two single trundle beds set signally or to form two double beds. From here the fenced and grassed rear garden with outdoor furniture is accessed through glass sliding doors, or directly via stairs from above.
Whether by car or enjoying the ‘Greenway Walk’, shopping at Sigma Supermarket or Dino's in Lenno is less than 1km away. Other local services include a tourist office (by the town hall), a pharmacy (English spoken), bank with Bancomat (ATM), and numerous restaurants, including ‘Il Cris’ and ‘Numero Uno’ for wood-oven pizza. More locally by car or via the ancient walk down from upper Ossuccio, down at the junction of Via Santuario and Via Statale, supplies can be purchased from the deli-restaurant-newsagent-tabaccaio San Giovanni.
Each Tuesday the weekly market in Lenno has been drawing visitors for over 100 years to troll the stalls selling everything from vegetables, plants, clothing, smallgoods, hot roast meats, hardware, to caged birds. At any time the Lenno waterfront is a wonderful spot to enjoy a stroll or refreshment and both Bar Golfo and Bar Sport offer free Wi-Fi.
Restaurants in Ossuccio include Osteria de Giuanin, Locanda Grifo, and Trattoria S. Giacomo, all with alfresco dining in season. A childrens’ playground is located just down from Casa Turri to the right of the roundabout, and by the lakeshore Lido below the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena with its iconic Gothic tower is a popular summer spot with café and water access. Here too, by the roadside a bank with Bancomat (ATM), and a local tourist office provide convenience. This tourist office with archaeological museum can arrange water taxi access to the island to view the protected ruins (access also from nearby Sala Comacina). The island’s history makes fascinating reading and as a religious centre of the Como region was the site of the important 11C basilica of St Euphemius. The present church of St John was built on the island in the 18C. Alternatively, access the island to enjoy refreshments at the island’s café-bar ‘La Botta’ or to dine at the island’s famous Laconda dell’Isola restaurant.
A short walk south from Ossuccio, Via dei Pini takes the ancient walled path down from the main road to the village of Sala Comacina. Dining options include four restaurants to meet all tastes, and three café bars. From the village square, Piazza Matteotti, a water taxi service connects with the island, and further along the waterfront, at the end of the ‘Lungo Lago’ walk past the beach with enclosed swimming area set into the lake, ferries call at the ‘Navigazione` point by Taverna Bleu (tickets available on board), to connect with the island and towns and villages such as Lenno (Villa Balbianello), Tremezzo (Villa Carlotta), Bellagio for boutique shopping up and down the unique stairways, pretty Varenna, and sunny Menaggio in the north, or south to Argegno (transport hub for busses and ferries), international Cadenabbia, and Como where the ‘Centro Storico’ is a shoppers’ paradise with an easy-going charm, and enchanting historical ambiance.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites
The quaint village of Ossuccio is famous for its churches including the World Heritage listed Santuario (sanctuary) Madonna del Soccorso (c1532) set above the village. This church can be reached via the Viale delle Cappelle, a wide walking path linking 14 baroque chapels featuring life-sized dioramas. The path affords spectacular views over Lake Como stretching from Bellagio to Argegno. A café-bar at the rear of the church provides welcome respite for travellers and pilgrims alike.
