This is the third time I have stayed at Vikki's beautiful farm. She has somehow managed to make each visit unique and I have loved it every time. As she says in her introduction, the cabin is nestled on the side of a sunlight hill with views across the farm to the ocean. The cabin itself is modest but imaginatively built and well insulated. A broom is all it takes to keep the floor clean and there is plenty of space inside for the double and 2 single beds we ended up needing. Set above the farmhouse, one has total privacy and silence until the farm wakes in the morning. How wonderful it was to lie in bed, gazing across the emerald paddocks and trees to the blue, blue sea, listening to the different crows, barks, lows, neighs and calls of the various animals intermingled with those of the native birds. During my stays we have experienced milking the house cow and goat ( there's nothing like fresh milk on your breakfast!), rounding up cattle and herding them down the road to fresh pasture, riding the horses up through the farm, over the sand dunes to the beach and the wild Pacific Ocean, kayaking in the estuary at the mouth of the river, jumping off the bridge there for a swim, cycling to the beach where the scarlet flowering pohutakawa trees shade the yellow sand and blue water and have spent many a night around the campfire. We have never gone hungry and most dinners have been shared ones with Vikki and friends. She homekills her own meat, the beef is some of the best you will find anywhere. If you are able to help with meal preparation there will be more time for Vikki to organise awesome things for you to do. There are fruit trees all around. Vikki has an inside shower with instant hot water, but also an outside solar shower for sunny days. There is a toilet in the farmhouse too, and a long drop loo with plenty of ventilation nearby. The cabin, being a work in progress, does not yet have a shower or loo but it is not too far to walk to one down the hill. She has several bikes in the shed for the use of guests, the beach is only a 20 minute, easy and safe ride away. Horses are Vikki's passion. She is a champion jouster, ask to see her photos and armour! She can give riding lessons or customise a ride according to your wishes. If you have a horse it would love to graze on the lush pastures there and you can bring your dog too, Vikki's are very friendly. In a nutshell, the situation is remote, beautiful and basic. Vikki's hospitality and willingness to accommodate your wishes make it a truly unique, calming, back to your roots experience which my friends, family and I have felt privileged to experience. I shall definitely be heading her way again.
