Looking for an inexpensive alternative to a hotel? Looking for luxury at a discount? Then please book a hotel in town. There are plenty that offer all the comforts Europeans have come to expect, even in the middle of nowhere, at a cheaper price than I can afford to offer.
If you have read all the reviews by people who have stayed here, are intrigued by the prospect of seclusion and are willing to forego your comfort zone and live like a local, you are most welcome to my home.

ที่พัก

This Cretan home is older than anyone knows, built with thick stone walls on the top of a rocky outcrop overlooking a stream that once powered the mill. Over the tops of the olive trees that surround the building, the Mediterranean sea is just visible from the large front patio.

A sink, refrigerator, and gas stove for cooking and a washing machine for washing clothes. You can also use the world's worst shower (low water pressure) to wash the sand and salt from your body after enjoying the beach, before going into town for a frappe, a raki, or dinner and more.

Someone is always available nearby if you have any questions once you get there.

The area immediately around the house is called Milos for the old mill that used to grind grain for flour in the late summer and olive oil in the winter. You share Milos with two old cretan women, their chickens, and a few goats.

It is just a short walk (10 minutes) through the olive groves to the beaches or the center of Paleochora, or you can use bicycles (rent or use ours) to get there in under two minutes. A public bus goes by the house two or three times each day up to Chania or a taxi from Paleochora can be hired to take you there, or to the airport.

ผู้เข้าพักใช้อะไรได้บ้าง

If I am not in Paleochora, I will have a neighbour look after you during your stay. I will tell you how to get in touch with her before your arrival.

If I am in Paleochora, you will not have been able to book your room, as I will be in it.

Someone is always available nearby if you have any questions once you get there. The house is cleaned and fresh sheets are put on the bed once each week for stays longer than a week.
You will probably not see me on your trip. When I am in Paleochora, I stay at my house. While you are there, that is where you will be staying. Do you begin to see the problem? (If I was there, there would be no place for you.)

สิ่งอื่นที่ควรรู้

There are quite a few cats in the area. We have them sterilized each spring, but their numbers continue to grow. We are trying to establish a feeding station away from the house, so please do not feed them on the balcony or they are likely to become a problem.

Because of poor design, the washing machine sits directly in front of the toilet, right up against your knees. If you have a slightly larger than normal sized body, like mine, you will find it impossible to sit straight on the toilet. When the house was built, indoor plumbing did not yet exist. The whole bathroom is an afterthought.

There is no coffee maker. There has never been a coffee maker. Coffee in Greece is made in a pot on the stove. You put in some water, some finely ground coffee, and some sugar. Then you put it over the heat, and stir until the mixture just begins to foam. You will see a golden foam. This is the moment you must stop, remove it from the heat and pour it into tiny cups, serve with a tall glass of cool water and drink it i tiny sips while it is still boiling hot.
Filter coffee is available in town, but the heat will probably push you towards the more appropriate cooling iced frappe.

There are no individually wrapped little scented soap and shampoo packets. Local soap, made in Chania from olive oil is made available. I have used it on my body and hair for many years and find it superior to perfume and lanolin in every way, despite the natural olive green color. My neighbour Maria occasionally makes soap from olive oil as well. Though very local and very natural, it is rarely in anything like a square well formed bar and if it is wrapped up at all, it will be in old newspaper.

James' description of his home is spot on, so do read it carefully before you book. We loved the rustic nature of the accommodation and being in the tiny hamlet of Milos. We were so glad we had arranged to stay here rather than in Paleochora (a short walk away) itself. Do visit To Skolio in Anydri for a superb meal and Azogires makes for an unexpectedly great day out with it's caves, Turkish ruins and deliciously cold river pool. Make sure you pop into Alfa Kafenion to get a hand drawn map from the bar's characterful owner Lucky who is clearly dedicated to keeping his village alive.

James' place is something special. If you wish to have an experience that transcends the idea of a conventional holiday, then this is for you. We came here hoping to experience the beautiful atmosphere of Paleochora, and the unrivalled natural surroundings, but we got so much more. The house offers all that you need in life, and an exceptional collection of literature. It was a week that we will never forget.

a nice, quite, decorated with character place that served us excellently as our base for our holidays in Palaiochora. Fully recommended.

Wow what an adventure! James' place is certainly for those willing to forgo city living/modern conveniences but it's absolutely brilliant to stay in a little local part of this amazing town amongst the tops of the eucalyptus trees. Look out of the window in the middle of the night and see the most stunning view of the Milky Way. We visited for 3 nights, two of those three days was during a 40 degree heatwave, the house was like an oven. The last night there was a gale outside. Being a traditional old home, expect the place to be exposed to the elements. If you're a light sleeper and visiting during some hot/windy weather be forewarned! Apart from the extreme weather, the house was fun to stay in, it's very close to the beach but far away enough to not feel like a tourist on a package holiday. Everything worked just fine and the shower is totally cool (except the water heated by the sun during the heat wave was near boiling point!). Should also flag that the toilet requires you to go out of the house, it's been bolted onto the side.
