Less than 3 hours away from New York our 3 bedroom cabin is the perfect retreat for those who seek beauty, charm and simplicity. The nearby town of Andes is a hidden gem in a pristine and protected landscape, and off the usual beaten track.
Our cabin is the perfect retreat from the city, in one of the most pristine areas of the Catskills, 4.5 miles from the town of Andes. It's a one-floor rustic 50s ranch-style home with a large deck and a garden. There are three bedrooms with 3 queen-sized beds, and one bathroom with shower. The cabin is on a secondary road with very little traffic and is surrounded by forests.
We provide a wifi connection and a land line phone that you can use to receive and to make local calls, a washer and dryer and a fully equipped and well-stocked kitchen. There's also a charcoal-fired Weber kettle grill for the summer BBQ. There is no cellphone reception within a 15-mile radius of the house, so bring a computer or calling card to make calls.
For winter heating there's central air and a wood-burning stove. We supply the wood and instructions on how to keep the cabin toasty during cold winter nights.
The garage will be unlocked. There you'll find the grill, as well as wood for the stove.
It is rare that I'm around, so most of our communication will be by email and by phone. You will have the whole cabin to yourself. In case of an emergency, you can call Barb Short, at (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), from the landline.
Please no parties larger than 6 and no smoking indoors. Pets are allowed, but there will be an extra cleaning fee for large dogs. There are coyotes and other wild life in the area, so be careful when letting dogs go outside.
You will need to bring organic trash back with you when you leave as there is no garbage pick up. The local dump requires a special sticker to dispose of it. You can leave recyclable trash such as glass and cardboard in the garage.
In the winter, when using the wood-burning stove, please empty out ashes. I usually sprinkle them on the driveway.
In the summer, please clean grill after use and make sure that grill and umbrella are back in the garage.
All used sheets and towels should be taken off of beds and put into the washer when leaving. In the winter the thermostat should be put back to 50 and the electric radiators turned off.
No muddy shoes in the house! Please take off shoes before entering the living area.
I live in Brooklyn with my two kids and have this house as an escape from the city and a place to relax in nature with my family. It's also a place where I like to work, read, write and take long walks. I teach literature at Queens College and run communication workshop at Baruch College. I grew up in Europe, love New York, and have traveled extensively, which is one of my passions.
I think you'll find that the area around Andes is absolutely unique in the Catskills, with it's small farms dotting the countryside, pastures, beautiful lakes, lush forests. No urban distraction whatsoever. There's also a great local culture to explore, local natural farming, galleries, concerts, summer fairs. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
