Hiroshi's house called Kokinen House was very wonderful to stay in. We slept well on the comfortable tatami mats, futons, plush down comforters, fluffy pillows, and clean linens. The upstairs room was large enough for maybe 5 people to sleep comfortably. We were two adults and 6 year old child. The steps to the upstairs are steep so be aware if you have hip or climbing problems. The downstairs rooms incl. the living room (more persons can sleep), the small dining table (sitting on floor pillows, not chairs), the office area with large desk for working, and the kitchen, toilet and shower. The shower room is new and modern but the rest of the house is wooden, drafty, and traditional. It is beautiful for those looking to stay in a place with more space and character than a white/sterile hotel room. The kitchen only has small fridge, rice cooker, toaster oven, and electric pan and there are not large plates or cups but we got along for 8 weeks here ok. The grocery store is 3 mins walk so you buy food every day or two. The doors and windows are all old glass with traditional wood frame which is lovely but a bit rattly in the windy or storms. The wifi worked great. The house is at the base of the Funaoka Park hill with stairs right out the alley from the house. Great to walk/run around, kids playground, and the Kenkun Shrine is 3 minute walk--lovely in the early morning to stroll around. Also, the public bathhouse, Funaoka, is 3 mins from the house and is wonderful to experience. We went many times. Hot baths, medium temps, sauna, outside baths, electric baths! and many counters and stools for serious scrubbing. Its an old tradition in Kyoto. The house is situated only 10 mins walk from Daitokuji temple-complex across Kitaoji which is very big, wonderful, and a must see. Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) is also only 15 mins walk. The neighborhood is quiet to walk around and there are buses that come all nearby on Kitaoji, Horikawa, and Senbon to reach any destination in the city. We bought bikes to get around which I would highly recommend! Hiroshi was far away, we never met him, but he replied to our requests for information and needs promptly. Highly recommended!

Our family of three (my wife, my 11 year old daughter, and myself) spent 3 days and 2 nights at this lovely house. The house is a timeless piece of hand craft work. It is simple and old fashioned, but this is exactly what makes it special. It was comfortable sleeping during the nights. No TVs but who needs TVs in such a place. The host very considerate enough to provide wifi though. The location just couldn't be better for us. It is right at the foot of the Funaokayama Park, literally steps away from the beautiful Kenkun Shrine on top of the Funaokayama hill. It is also walking distance from stunning Daitoku-ji Temple, which to us represents the finest of the Kyoto culture. Koto-in and Zuiho-in are our favorite by far, peaceful, timeless, and soul cleansing; we sat in there for hours. In terms of the neighborhood, we really appreciated the public bath (Funaoku Onsen) every night during our stay - what an authentic community experience. Tom Sawyer bakery is excellent. The small streets around the house are cute and clean. We enjoyed walked around just to check out the area and cute little shops. Everyone may have their own preferences. But I would definitely come back again if I ever find myself in Kyoto. And would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone I know.

This place was MAGICAL. Tucked in a quiet neighborhood, the teahouse gave us the perfect peak into daily life in Kyoto. Walking distance to many famous attractions, but sheltered from the hustle and bustle of tourist locations. Sleeping on the tatami was incredibly comfortable, and having access to the historic local bathhouse was a huge treat. Would highly recommend this to any traveler who wants an authentic Kyoto experience!
