I stayed in Baan Suan. It's the first one you see when you come up the road before the la Cigale sign. It is on 2 levels, with an entertaining deck below and everything else up top. Rain shower, kitchen, dining and sala are outside under a roof, with only the bedroom enclosed and air conditioned.
A lot of complimentary drinks are provided, including fresh coconut, which is always welcome. You also get eggs and bread to cook for breakfast. And there is an espresso machine in the room. The coffee is blended and ground by the staff. I say again: there is an espresso machine in the room. There's also a gas stove, an electric kettle and a toaster.
Rooms have free WiFi. A phone is provided for local calls. It already has the numbers for restaurants, management and taxi driver in the address book. Keep it with you when you are in town.
Staff will occasionally appear on your deck to light mosquito coils or to switch on the outside lighting.
3 restaurants have menus in the rooms and will deliver. Restaurants in Koh Tao are mainly western.
Doing nothing on your deck.
Being at the beach in 5 minutes.
Discreet service. Food deliveries.
Espresso machine in your room.
There are lots of mosquitoes in the bush so use the coils provided. Get some repellent. 7-11 has household spray.
There's a shop if you walk down to the corner, turn right and walk about 400m. It's steep. You will get sweaty. Embrace it.
You can walk down to the corner and keep going through the bungalow resort to get to the beach. Turn left and walk along the beach to Sairee. It's 15 min from room to the 7-11. Or turn right and you're in a nice restaurant, Rim Lae.
You can rent mountain bikes in Mae Haad. Nong the taxi driver knows the place. Be prepared to huff and puff, and slide a lot. Check the brakes and tyre tread.
Red duck curry from Hippo is great. Their fajitas come with too much chicken. Fry the leftovers with an egg the next morning.
Order fruit juice with dinner and put it in the fridge for breakfast.
Swim at high tide if possible. Otherwise it's sandy and shallow close to the beach, and then it becomes sharp from the coral.
Sairee has freediving schools. You can do a one-day course to see if you like it. It will make you a better snorkeller. And it will get you off the deck in your room.
